Morosi’s Latest: Blue Jays, Sanchez, Correia, Holliday

By Nat Boyle | July 5, 2009 at 10:00am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com suggests the Blue Jays might want to set their sights on 2010, after which they stand to lose Lyle Overbay, Scott Downs, Scott Rolen, and Roy Halladay to free agency. Not to mention Cito Gaston and J.P. Ricciardi, whose contracts will both expire barring an extension. Morosi writes,

"Six pitchers currently reside on the disabled list, and ace Roy Halladay was a recent visitor. Vernon Wells and Alex Rios, signed through 2014, haven't been hitting. The team is in fourth place and would probably need to climb the standings quickly in order to convince ownership that additions to an $80 million payroll are warranted this month."

Morosi adds the following:

  • Halladay is not going anywhere.
  • Ricky Romero and Scott Richmond are most likely staying put, says Morosi, and I doubt anyone here disagrees.
  • Pitching is not a need for 2010 with the anticipated return of Jesse Litsch, Shaun Marcum, and Dustin McGowan.
  • The Jays are almost certain to keep Downs, who has become a premier reliever in the American League.

Morosi suggests, the Jays trade a pitcher or two to boost their team OPS which lags in the AL East behind the Red Sox, Yankees, and Rays. Given the above, Morosi suggests Brian Tallet as a trade chip. "Tallet could be looked upon as a viable option for teams looking for a mid-rotation left-handed starter, particularly if the Mariners stay in the race and elect not to move Erik Bedard and Jarrod Washburn."

They may also look at dealing from their collection of right-handed setup men, such as Casey Janssen, Jeremy Accardo, Brandon League, or Jason Frasor. Just speculating here but Janssen may be the most attractive since he can start. As a reliever in 2007, Janssen had a 2.35 ERA in 72.2 IP with 6 saves before missing 2008 with a torn labrum.

Morosi has a few more bullet points to discuss:

  • Freddy Sanchez's contract contains an $8MM option for 2010 that automatically vests after 635 PAs, or only 600 if he makes the All Star team. So, it stands to reason that Sanchez will either make the All Star Team or see his trade value increase. This may be moot given Sanchez is on pace for 660 plate appearances. Morosi says one Mariners official doesn't think Pittsburgh is considering trading Sanchez. The M's have need for a pure hitter as well as a second baseman given concerns about Jose Lopez ability to stay at 2B long term.
  • The M's asked about Jeremy Hermida, but there wasn't a lot of movement. Morosi notes Hermida's trade value has fallen significantly.
  • Kevin Correia is pitching fantastically but the Padres haven't put him on the open market. Morosi doesn't report much excitement among other clubs.
  • Morosi says "one person in the industry who knows Oakland general manager Billy Beane well," guessed Matt Holliday will stay with the team so Beane could collect the compensatory draft picks. Morosi quotes the source: "Billy loves the draft."

Marlins Rumors: Ross, Hermida, Uggla

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 17, 2009 at 10:31am CDT

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that the Marlins aren't about to pull the trigger and deal away arbitration-eligible players in an effort to trim payroll. Instead, they feel ready to make a run at a postseason berth. Here are the specifics from Frisaro's blog post:

  • The Marlins aren't actively shopping Dan Uggla, Cody Ross or Jeremy Hermida.
  • Frisaro suggests the Braves offered Charlie Morton and Jeff Francoeur for Hermida before the Nate McLouth trade.
  • The Marlins always look to obtain pitching in return for their players.
  • The Braves are still looking to add a bat.

The Marlins are 32-34 now, third in the NL East and just 3.5 games behind the Cardinals in the Wild Card race. Don't look for them to deal anyone away unless they fall out of contention.

Morosi On Penny, Hermida, Padres

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 17, 2009 at 8:43am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports shows that Derek Jeter's much-criticized defense has been above average this year. He also provides some rumors, so let's take a look:

  • One official said he doubts the Red Sox move Brad Penny. They can do so without his permission, now that we're two and a half months into the season.
  • Morosi says Chris Young and Heath Bell are sure to attract interest, but says Kevin Towers doesn't have to trade either player.
  • It's possible that the Padres will "flip relievers for prospects."
  • The Braves like Jeremy Hermida, but it makes sense for them to pass the Marlins in the standings before inquiring on him.

Odds And Ends: Francoeur, Draft, Giants

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2009 at 5:26pm CDT

Some more links for the evening…

  • MLB.com's Mark Bowman wonders if Jeff Francoeur might end up with the Marlins after all. He can imagine a Francoeur-Jeremy Hermida swap. Personally, I don't see the Marlins making that deal.
  • Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are set to sign their second round pick, pitcher Alex Wilson.
  • MLB.com's Matthew Leach reports that the Cardinals agreed to sign their second rounder, Robert Stock, and 31 other players they drafted.
  • The Cards haven't reached an agreement with first rounder Shelby Miller yet, and, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, that's no surprise.
  • As Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports, Boston's director of player personnel, Mike Hazen heard Clay Buchholz's comments and remains sure that the righty wants to help the Red Sox win titles.
  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says the Giants could really use a power bat.

Marlins Rumors: Hermida, Francoeur, Ross

By | June 14, 2009 at 4:01pm CDT

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald has a couple of baseball-related updates in his most recent "Florida Sports Buzz" column:

  • The Marlins have received several calls about Jeremy Hermida, but the offers "haven't been enticing."  Sounds like it'll take a good chunk of talent to land the 25-year-old outfielder, who is hitting .276/.373/.421 with eight home runs and 29 RBI in 228 at-bats this season.
  • Altanta offered Jeff Francoeur straight up for Cody Ross last week, but the Marlins quickly declined.  For reference, Francoeur, 25, is batting .250/.282/.345 this season with four home runs and 29 RBI.  Ross, 28, is batting .270/.320/.482 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI.

If the Braves are truly shopping Francoeur, what other clubs make sense?   A change of scenery would probably serve him well.

Braves Discussed Ross; Hermida Available Too?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 4, 2009 at 11:47am CDT

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reports that the Braves were in serious discussions to trade for Marlins outfielder Cody Ross before pulling off the Nate McLouth deal yesterday. The Marlins made Ross available, but ultimately decided not to deal him. Some within the Atlanta organization would have preferred to trade for Ross because he wouldn't have commanded as much of a return as McLouth did.

Knobler reports that rival officials believe the Marlins are now "open to" trading Ross and Jeremy Hermida, not just Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla.

Marlins Avoid Arb With Cantu, Hermida

By | January 19, 2009 at 7:19pm CDT

8:47pm: Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has the terms on Hermida’s contract:  He’ll make $2.25MM in ’09 and can also earn up to $50K in performance bonuses.

8:19pm: Frisario is also reporting that the Fish have avoided arbitration with outfielder Jeremy Hermida, signing him to a one-year contract.

8:12pm: The Marlins have reached agreement on a one-year, $3.5MM deal with third baseman Jorge Cantu, according to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro.

It’s a nice raise for Cantu, who made just $600K in 2008.  The 26-year-old hit .277/.327/.481 with 29 home runs and 95 RBI for the Marlins last season. "Jorge is very happy, and he looks forward to the season," said his agent, Steve Canter.

No Sammy In Miami, Texas Or Cincy?

By Ben Jones | December 27, 2008 at 6:06pm CDT

The MLB Hot Stove Blog is reporting that free-agent veteran Sammy Sosa won’t be playing for the Florida Marlins.

Joe Frisaro believes the Marlins want to go into Spring Training with a younger group of outfielders, in particular John Raynor and Scott Cousins, competing for a major-league job.

Raynor is a speedster and played for Double-A Carolina Mudcats in 2008. He hit .312 over 452 plate appearances, and he stole 48 bases. He can play left field or center field.

Cousins split 2008 between Carolina and High-A Jupiter. He hit .304 with the Jupiter squad and dropped to .264 with the Double-A club. He primarily saw time at right field and center field.

Frisaro wrote that Jeremy Hermida will switch from right field to left field, and Cody Ross will be in right field.

Rangers beat writer Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram notes that the Texas Rangers don’t want Sosa’s services, either. “I don’t think we’ll pursue Sammy,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels wrote.

C. Trent Rosecrans of TheLotD.com, and formerly of the Cincinnati Post, spoke with Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty about Sosa. “I don’t think so,” Jocketty told Rosecrans.

Jeremy Hermida Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | December 10, 2008 at 7:12pm CDT

7:12pm: MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro says Mariners catcher Rob Johnson and Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia were discussed in these Hermida talks, but no match was found.

6:31pm: Baker says the Marlins wanted catching prospect Adam Moore from the Ms in a Hermida deal.  Baseball America ranks Moore as the Mariners’ sixth best prospect.  They say he looks like a future big league starting catcher; he’ll start ’09 at Triple A.

5:31pm: Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald says the Ms and Rangers initiated the Hermida talks, and they didn’t get far.

4:44pm: Geoff Baker says the Marlins offered Hermida to the Mariners and Rangers for catching.

12:34pm: Rays Index found a note from MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan on Monday – the Rays like Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz.

12:26pm: Berardino has an update.  He says the Marlins proposed trading Hermida to the Rays for two pitchers, likely among Jeff Niemann, Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, and Mitch Talbot.  The Rays rejected the offer and it’s unlikely to be revisited.

Berardino now says the Reds have yet to inquire on Hermida.

12:04pm: Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel discusses Jeremy Hermida trade possibilities in a blog post today (hat tip, Rays Index).  He says the Reds have definitely shown interest, and also discusses the Rays.  Berardino’s sources believe Micah Owings could be had, but not Johnny Cueto.  In the case of the Rays it’d apparently take Andy Sonnanstine rather than Edwin Jackson.

By the way, the Marlins have talked about the possibility of moving Hermida to left field if they keep him.  Hermida has been a slightly above-average right fielder according to the plus/minus system.

Marlins Rumors: Cantu, Uggla, Pudge

By Tim Dierkes | December 9, 2008 at 10:17pm CDT

10:17pm: Berardino says the Giants appear to be out of the running for Cantu due to defensive concerns.  That sentiment has been coming from the Giants writers as well lately.

12:36pm: MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro says the Marlins "don’t have immediate interest" in Ivan Rodriguez.

10:49am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Marlins don’t expect to trade Dan Uggla or Jorge Cantu at the Meetings, "but they remain open to all ideas."  Cantu has been linked to the Giants and White Sox in recent days.

Rosenthal names the Braves, Reds, and Rays as teams interested in Jeremy Hermida, though nothing is close.  Nick Cafardo also suggested the Giants.  The Cubs apparently haven’t discussed Hermida in a while.
