Mets Still Like Joe Blanton
Peter Botte of the New York Daily News says the Mets have asked Billy Beane to "keep them in mind" as he’s shopping Joe Blanton. Blanton could be their fallback plan for Johan Santana. Botte says the Twinsa are still hung up on Jose Reyes, though La Velle E. Neal III heard otherwise.
On December 20th, Buster Olney said a package of Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman, and Kevin Mulvey would probably net Blanton for the Mets.
If the Mets can’t get Santana or Blanton, they may move on to free agent targets such as Kyle Lohse, Livan Hernandez, Jon Lieber, Freddy Garcia, or Matt Morris. Botte does not mention Bartolo Colon as a free agent on the Mets’ radar.
Latest Santana Buzz From MetsBlog
MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone has a couple of recent radio reports referencing the team’s talks for Johan Santana. One involves Mike Francesa, the other Jon Heyman.
- Francesa says the Twins are still demanding Jose Reyes, and the Mets will never do that.
- According to Heyman, the Mets might be willing to give up any four of their prospects. As in Fernando Martinez, Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, and Kevin Mulvey? That would seemingly be impossible for the Twins to turn down. ESPN’s Keith Law went as far to say today that he "wouldn’t deal Martinez for one year of Santana under any circumstances."
Not Much Cooking With Johan
UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 12:25pm: Check out LENIII’s latest. He believes the Red Sox were always serious about Santana. Neal suggests the Angels are a sleeper even though they’ve yet to discuss Johan with the Twins. Neal spoke to an agent who nominated the Mets as his sleeper. As for the Dodgers, Neal’s not sensing much interest.
FROM 12-6-07 at 10:13am:
Thus is the nature of the rumor mill – tons of words expended on possibilities, sometimes with little closure. The latest semi-news on Johan Santana:
- Newsday’s source says it would be "virtually impossible" for the Mets to acquire Santana without including Jose Reyes. And the Mets are staunchly against that.
- The Red Sox made a couple of proposals that fell short, but they’re satisfied that he’s not a Yankee. Theo Epstein has left the building, no Santana deal in place.
At this moment, nothing much appears to be simmering on the Santana hot stove.
Santana/Reyes/Haren Rumor Quashed
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:45pm: Billy Beane, who rarely comments on trade rumors, actually went out of his way to call mine below a "total fabrication." I guess I should be proud, right? I was the subject of an elaborate hoax/impersonated sportswriter (thanks, Fake John Delcos!). I apologize – not sure why someone would go to such lengths, but lesson learned.
FROM 12-5-07 at 3:36pm:
Just got an incredible rumor from a trusted New York sportswriter. Stay with me, because this one’s crazy. But rest assured that if the source wasn’t good, I wouldn’t post it.
Minnesota has initiated talks for a three-way blockbuster with the Twins and A’s. Here’s how it would go down:
Mets send Jose Reyes, Kevin Mulvey to A’s
Mets send Hector Pellot to Twins
A’s send Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson to Mets
A’s send Dan Haren to Twins
Twins send Johan Santana to Mets
Mets get Johan Santana, Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson
A’s get Jose Reyes and Kevin Mulvey
Twins get Dan Haren and Hector Pellot
The source says Haren is exactly the type of player the Twins want for Santana, a cheap frontline starter. It’s known the Mets would hate to deal Reyes but they would get some value beyond Santana. Billy Beane is happy because he gets Reyes for one more year than he had Haren plus longtime favorite Mulvey. And, he’s out of Crosby’s contract.
Thoughts?
Stark’s Latest: Edmonds, Pierre, Guillen, Santana
ESPN’s Jayson Stark always cranks out a bunch of new rumors when he writes a column. This week is no exception.
- Jose Reyes: going nowhere.
- Probably since they hope to include him in a Johan Santana deal, the Red Sox won’t trade Coco Crisp until that situation is resolved. The Rangers liked Crisp, but are considering interesting alternatives: Rocco Baldelli, Jim Edmonds, and Juan Pierre. If only Ned Colletti could get someone to take his Pierre contract. Then he could sign another one almost equally as bad. Then he could trade Aaron Rowand a year from now and repeat the process.
- The Braves also liked Crisp, so they’ll move on for now. Stark speculates a stopgap like Dave Roberts could work.
- More speculation: Andruw Jones as a darkhorse signing for the Royals. I guess that would push David DeJesus out of center field.
- Is there an unmentioned Mystery Team in on Johan Santana? Stark’s sources suggest the Mariners, but those guys must not read Jon Heyman’s column. I’ll go with the Reds as my guess on the Mystery Team, if there is one.
- Speaking of guesses, Stark surmises that the Padres and Mets could be interested in Jose Guillen, aside from the Royals.
- More rumblings that Vicente Padilla could be traded this winter. Funny quote about how Padilla doesn’t have baggage – he has luggage. In fact his luggage cannot be carried, rather it requires a mid-sized cart.
Abraham On Hawkins, Igawa, Santana
Peter Abraham of The Journal News checks in on his blog with a couple of new Yankees tidbits.
- The Yankees are considering LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and a return of Luis Vizcaino among relief possibilities. Hawkins has the Tigers and Rockies after him. Mahay interests the Braves, Brewers, and Royals. Haven’t heard much about the Viz yet.
- Abraham says there is a market for Kei Igawa. The Yanks don’t have a rotation spot for him, but they are paying him through 2011. He’s signed cheaply since a large part of the expenditure was his posting fee. Other teams known to have shown interest in Igawa at one point: Padres, Orioles, Mariners, D’Backs, Dodgers, Mets, Cubs, Braves, Tigers, and Indians.
- Abraham does not think the Mets will surrender Jose Reyes, and therefore doesn’t think they can pull off a Johan Santana deal.
Mets Interested In Santana, Dotel, Chacon
The New York Post’s Mark Hale has an update for us regarding the Mets’ pursuit of pitching.
- Even though the Wilpons haven’t made any declarations to the media, the Mets are showing interest in Johan Santana. Hale notes a couple of stipulations: David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran won’t be dealt, and the Mets would want a 72-hour negotiation window. I don’t think anyone expected anything different on either point. The Twins could certainly use an influx of outfield talent, and the Mets have it.
- Octavio Dotel is one free agent on the Mets’ radar, though we’ve known that since the 16th. "On the radar" is getting overused…I need an alternative. Dotel would be fine with a setup role, though I’m guessing it would take two years and $12MM or more. Dotel came up through the Mets’ system as a starter, and was traded to the Astros in ’99 in the Mike Hampton/Derek Bell/Roger Cedeno deal. The Tigers and Royals may also be in on Dotel.
- The Mets also like Shawn Chacon, possibly as a swingman. The Rockies have interest in Chacon but only as a reliever. He’s said that he’d prefer to start.
Johan Santana Rumors
Let’s check in on Johan Santana. It’s kind of a big deal when the best pitcher in baseball becomes available.
- Ken Davidoff spoke to an NL official who believes the Twins will hold onto Santana and try to win with him in 2008. Re-signing him long-term seems unlikely. Davidoff believes every team in baseball would be interested, but the Mets would have to part with Jose Reyes to get him. Nonetheless Don Burke says the Mets will "pounce" on Santana if he becomes available.
- Joe Christensen spoke to Twins people who believe re-signing Santana is almost impossible. The Twins won’t go to five years on an offer for him, and may lowball him the way they did Torii Hunter and Carlos Silva. The offer would at least pave the way for an intense auction during the Winter Meetings. A midseason trade is always a consideration too. Keep in mind that Santana does have a limited no-trade clause allowing him to block trades to 12 teams. He may use that as leverage.
- Christensen adds that the Yankees may covet Santana more than they do Miguel Cabrera. It’s still believed that they won’t part with Joba, Phil, or Ian though.
- Phillies GM Pat Gillick believes Santana "will be moved for sure."
Heyman’s Latest
SI.com’s Jon Heyman has a new column up, with some minor info.
- Heyman’s sources describe a Jose Reyes for Johan Santana rumor as "pure fantasy." Well…who said it was ever anything more? Buster Olney was clearly just playing Let’s Make A Deal when he devised it. Things get twisted around easily.
- Most of us already figured this, but Heyman says the White Sox will go after either Aaron Rowand or Torii Hunter this winter.
- Heyman puts the Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Cubs, Mets, and Phillies into the A-Rod derby if the Yanks don’t keep him.
- No offense to Jon but this column really lacked any kind of new info.
Mets Come Out Ahead In Jose Reyes Signing
The Mets got a fantastic bargain Thursday in signing Jose Reyes to a four-year contract extension. New York bought out Reyes’s arbitration years and his first year of free agency. They also included an option to keep him for the 2011 season at $11MM.
Jon Heyman’s thoughts on the deal:
"I bet Jose Reyes‘ four-year $23.25 million contract isn’t the union’s favorite, and well-regarded agent Peter Greenberg sounded almost apologetic at the press conference on Thursday. Reyes almost surely would make more by going year to year, as Derek Jeter did, but that’s not easy to do when you grow up poor, and particularly when you’ve had injuries."
Reyes is just 23 and is in the midst of a breakout season. His OBP and SLG are by far career bests. Rickey Henderson seems to have helped this spring. More teams should try relationships like this. Even though Baseball Prospectus’s PECOTA projection system did not see these spikes coming, projections still indicate that every year of the contract, 2011 included, is a bargain for the Mets.
