Cubs Designate Luis Vazquez For Assignment

By Steve Adams | January 28, 2025 at 4:06pm CDT

The Cubs announced Tuesday that they’ve designated infielder Luis Vazquez for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to veteran utilityman Jon Berti, whose previously reported one-year deal with the Cubs is now official.

Vazquez, 25, was a 17th-round pick out of Puerto Rico who made his MLB debut with Chicago in 2024. He appeared in 11 games and went 1-for-12 in a total of 14 trips to the plate. The rest of Vazquez’s season was spent in Triple-A, where he slashed .263/.347/.432 (104 wRC+) with the Cubs’ top affiliate in Des Moines. Vazquez has drawn walks at a stout 11.6% clip and fanned at a roughly average 22.5% rate over the past two seasons in Iowa. He’s shown off a bit of pop, swatting 17 homers in 543 plate appearances, and chipped in seven steals in 12 attempts.

Vazquez has played the overwhelming majority of his professional games at shortstop, logging 4929 innings at the position compared to just 268 at second base, 186 at third base, two in right field and one at first base. Baseball America ranked him 16th among Cubs farmhands last winter and praised him as the best defensive shortstop in the system while also lauding an offensive breakout he’d shown in 2023. He didn’t quite sustain his ’23 production this past year but did post slightly better-than-average offensive output in Iowa.

With a quality glove at shortstop, a pair of minor league options remaining and a couple above-average seasons of production in the upper minors in 2023-24, Vazquez could well hold appeal to another club. Chicago will have five days to trade him. If there’s no taker, he’ll be placed on waivers, at which point any other team could claim him. Waivers are a 48-hour process, so within the next week, there’ll be some resolution on the outcome of the slick-fielding shortstop’s DFA.

Cubs Promote Luis Vazquez

By Mark Polishuk | May 21, 2024 at 2:20pm CDT

May 21: The Cubs have now officially promoted Vazquez, with Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times among those to relay the full slate of moves on X. Swanson was also activated off the injured list while Mastrobuoni and Pete Crow-Armstrong were optioned in corresponding moves.

May 19: The Cubs are promoting infield prospect Luis Vazquez to the majors, according to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo (who also happens to be Vazquez’s cousin).  The 24-year-old Vazquez will be making his MLB debut whenever he appears in his first game.

Since the Cubs’ next game isn’t until Tuesday, Vazquez’s call-up seems tied to Nico Hoerner’s health status.  Hoerner hasn’t played since last Monday due to a balky hamstring, and while the Cubs were hopeful Hoerner would be able to play Tuesday, it could be that the team decided that an official injured list stint was necessary to get Hoerner fully recovered.  Dansby Swanson is also already on the IL recovering from a knee sprain and was expected to be activated on Tuesday, so it is possible Vazquez could be joining the Cubs if there has been some unknown setback in Swanson’s recovery.

Whatever the case, the door has been opened for Vazquez to get his first shot at the big leagues.  A 14th-round pick for the Cubs in the 2017 draft, Vazquez didn’t do much at the plate until last season, when he batted a combined .271/.361/.456 with 20 home runs over 528 plate appearances almost evenly split between Double-A and Triple-A.  The hot hitting has continued into this season, as Vazquez has slashed .270/.369/.409 with three homers across his 164 PA with Triple-A Iowa.

This breakout year led the Cubs to put Vazquez on their 40-man roster last November in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, and for some extra attention from the pundits — MLB Pipeline has Vazquez ranked as the 13th-best prospect in Chicago’s farm system, while Baseball America has him 14th.  As per Pipeline’s scouting report, Vazquez was able to straighten out his swing and make better contact after learning to lower his hands at the plate, thus unlocking some extra power potential.  Between these improvements and Vazquez’s highly-touted defense, both Pipeline and BA think Vazquez now has a path to a Major League role as a versatile bench player.

Vazquez’s glovework and throwing arm each merit 60s on the 20-80 scouting scale, and as Pipeline puts it, “he’s so good at short that Chicago rarely has deployed him at other positions.”  Vazquez does have some experience at second and third base and shouldn’t have much trouble at either position given his shortstop capability, making him an interesting utility option for the Cubs on at least a temporary basis.  Miles Mastrobuoni and Nick Madrigal have been filling the middle infield roles with Swanson and Hoerner out, and if both players are indeed back on Tuesday, Mastrobuoni could find himself relegated back to Triple-A to create room for Vazquez’s promotion.

Minor 40-Man Moves: Rodríguez, Vázquez, Nance

By Darragh McDonald | November 6, 2023 at 5:46pm CDT

It has been an extremely busy day at MLBTR, since today was the deadline for various roster machinations around the league. Free agency, both the major league and minor league variety, kicked off at 4:00 pm Central. That was also the deadline for decisions on various contract options, as well as the deadline for clubs to decide whether to issue qualifying offers to eligible players. Those deadlines led to many roster moves, some of which got lost in the shuffle. Here’s a post rounding up some moves that were missed throughout the day.

  • The Rays announced that they added right-hander Manuel Rodríguez to their 40-man roster, preventing him from reaching minor league free agency. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported on the move prior to the official announcement. The 27-year-old was acquired from the Cubs in a trade just before the deadline. He made 34 major league appearances with the Cubs over 2021 and 2022 but spent all of 2023 in the minors. Between the two clubs, he had a 3.99 ERA in 56 1/3 innings on the farm, striking out 32.4% of hitters against a 10.5% walk rate. The club also announced that infielder Tristan Gray, outfielder Raimel Tapia and right-hander Cole Sulser, all of whom were placed on waivers last week, cleared waivers and will become free agents.
  • The Cubs added infielder Luis Vázquez to their 40-man roster, per Meghan Montemurro of Chicago Tribune, to prevent him from reaching minor league free agency. The 24-year-old has spent his entire professional career with the Cubs, having been selected by them in the 14th round of the 2017 draft. He split this year between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .271/.361/.456 for a wRC+ of 112. He played the three infield position to the left of first base, giving the club some depth at those positions going forward.
  • The Marlins announced they sent right-hander Tommy Nance outright to Triple-A Jacksonville. The righty had an encouraging season for the Fish in 2022, making 35 appearances with a 4.33 ERA, 29.1% strikeout rate, 10.7% walk rate and 46.4% ground ball rate. Unfortunately, a shoulder strain kept him on the injured list until August, at which point he was optioned, meaning he didn’t pitch in the majors in 2023. He also finished the year on the IL due to an oblique strain. His 17 innings in the minors resulted in a 1.59 ERA.
