Giants Discussing Uggla, Konerko And Lee?

By Paul Moro | October 11, 2008 at 1:52pm CDT

The Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers mentions some names that the offensively-challenged San Francisco Giants are considering acquiring this off-season, specifically, Dan Uggla, Paul Konerko, and Derrek Lee. He writes:

San Francisco, desperate for a proven bat, is expected to pursue one-dimensional second baseman Dan Uggla. The Giants also may kick the tires on first baseman Paul Konerko of the White Sox and Derrek Lee of the Cubs, both of whom have full no-trade clauses. They probably would have to deal a young pitcher—Jonathan Sanchez or Matt Cain.

I understand why the Giants would want to add some bats. They averaged 3.95 runs per game in 2008, just barely ahead of San Diego who had an MLB-worst 3.93 runs/game. But I do not understand why they’d want these three guys specifically.

  • Uggla is arbitration-eligible this year and you’d have to assume he’s due for a pretty big raise from his current $417K salary. Despite this, Uggla will probably cost around $6MM in 2009, which is a steal in today’s market. He’s certainly no defensive asset, but second basemen with 30+ HR power are not exactly plentiful. But here’s the issue – Uggla’s going to be 29 in March, which is rather old for a first-year arbitration player. If the Giants somehow manage to get him on the cheap, then good for them. If they need to give up one of their young pitchers to do so, that would be a mistake.
  • If the White Sox trade away Konerko, they’d be doing so at what could be a bargain price. The first baseman will be 33 on Opening Day and is a 10-and-5 player and as such has a full no-trade clause, not to mention the $24MM due to him over the next two years. I’m not sure how you’re going to convince him to waive that no-trade without tacking on another two years to the end of that deal. And while I expect Konerko to have a decent bounce-back year in 2009, he’s never going to be a 40+HR bat again. The Giants are not going to be competitive in 2009 and Paul Konerko is not going to change that.
  • A similar argument can be made against the idea of getting Derrek Lee to the Bay. Also signed for two more seasons (at $13MM per), Lee’s a bit older than Konerko and his power numbers have dropped quite a bit. And as Rogers mentions, the Cubs will not let Lee go without getting compensated with a Cain or Sanchez in return. Lee may have two more above-average years left in him. Cain and Sanchez is worth far more than that to a rebuilding team like the Giants.

Heyman’s Latest: Sabathia, Hardy, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | October 7, 2008 at 4:32pm CDT

Let’s take a look at Jon Heyman’s column from yesterday.

  • The Yankees will go "all in" for C.C. Sabathia.  Heyman sees the Dodgers, Mets, and Giants as other possible suitors.
  • Heyman dismisses a rumor of J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, and another player for Matt Cain.
  • He predicts a "feeding frenzy" for Hardy.  I’m with Heyman though, I wouldn’t be quick to trade him this winter.
  • Heyman talked to a GM who feels the Mets will go after Boras client Manny Ramirez.  If the five-year demand is accurate, the list of suitors will probably shrink significantly.
  • Manny quote: "I gotta thank Scott for bringing me to L.A."  Hmmm.

Odds and Ends: Lowe, Redmond, Timlin

By Tim Dierkes | October 3, 2008 at 10:46am CDT

Linkage for Friday…

  • River Ave. Blues discovered that Mike Mussina’s wife may be a bigger factor than we thought in regard to his retirement decision.
  • David O’Brien tosses out some names for the Braves to consider: Derek Lowe, Matt Cain, Roy Oswalt, and Josh Willingham.  Everyone likes Lowe…Anthony McCarron says the Yankees and Mets should consider him.  Those clubs could also enter a bidding war for C.C. Sabathia, says Bob Klapisch.  Will C.C.’s postseason record diminish his contract?  I don’t think so.
  • Greg Couch doesn’t want Javier Vazquez pitching for the White Sox again.  Maybe Ozzie is right, Vazquez is not a big-game pitcher.  But why say that publicly?
  • Joe Christensen seems certain the Twins will exercise Mike Redmond’s $950K option.
  • Chris Carpenter’s shoulder injury is unprecedented among pitchers.  Do the Cardinals need to add veteran rotation insurance?  Speaking of unprecedented procedures…Takashi Saito had platelet-rich plasma injected into his elbow in July.
  • Joe Starkey thinks the Pirates should…non-tender Adam LaRoche?
  • Mike Timlin could retire.
  • Huge E-Ticket Manny Ramirez feature from Bill Simmons, wherein Scott Boras is blamed for his Boston exit.  Good read.

Olney: Young Starters On Trade Market

By Tim Dierkes | October 1, 2008 at 10:33am CDT

ESPN’s Buster Olney names three young starting pitchers who might be available this winter:  Jake Peavy, Zack Greinke, Matt Cain, and Edwin Jackson.

Peavy is 27; his trade value is off the charts.  He’s under contract for the next four seasons at a below-market $59MM total.  In 2013, his $22MM club option could be seen as a discount as well – remember when A.J. Burnett at $11MM a year was crazy?  The A’s received a six-prospect bounty for three years of Dan Haren; Peavy suitors will have to top that.  Peavy will also need to be compensated to waive his no-trade clause.

Greinke would require a package of players rivaling return the Orioles received for Erik Bedard.  Middle infield, catcher, and center field could be areas the Royals look to address.

It’d be three years of Cain, so put his price somewhere between Greinke and Peavy.  Jackson is also under team control for three years, but he’d be the easiest to acquire of the four.

Braves May Have $45MM To Spend

By Tim Dierkes | September 30, 2008 at 11:27am CDT

TUESDAY: Dave O’Brien rattles off a few more pitchers of interest for the Braves: Matt Cain, Ryan Dempster, and Brad Penny.

MONDAY: In our Braves Offseason Outlook, we suggested the Braves might have $40MM to spend this winter even if they hold payroll steady.  Instead, GM Frank Wren revealed today that payroll will increase beyond last year’s $102.4MM.  MLB.com’s Mark Bowman estimates Wren will have $45MM to work with.

As you know, the Braves intend to add two veteran starters as well as a slugging outfielder.  They’ll also attempt to re-sign John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and Mike Hampton.  We covered this in the outlook, but it seems the Braves will sign one of Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett.  They could complement that signing by inking a Japanese pitcher (or just a Paul Byrd type), and then survey the robust free agent market for left fielders.  The Braves will monitor the trade market, but their top prospects are not available.

Giants Rumors: Aurilia, Vizquel, Cain

By Tim Dierkes | September 29, 2008 at 9:23pm CDT

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News did some quick blogging from Brian Sabean’s press conference today.  Here’s a full transcript.  Hot stove notes:

  • Rich Aurilia could be re-signed, but Omar Vizquel won’t be back.  The Giants will buy Vizquel out for $300K.
  • With Pablo Sandoval penciled in at first base, the Giants may be reluctant to trade catcher Bengie Molina (my own speculation on the Molina part).
  • Matt Cain is said to be "untouchable" in a trade.  So we’ll stop with the Cain trade scenarios for now.
  • Possible offseason needs include bullpen help and a run-producer.  The relief help could come via free agency, while the bat would probably come via trade.  That bat would not be a guy with one year left on his contract (Matt Holliday comes to mind).

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Holliday, Barmes

By Tim Dierkes | September 29, 2008 at 9:25am CDT

Let’s see what we can find in three new columns from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post today.

  • I wrote last week that the Rockies would come in a bit under $80MM after arbitration raises.  Renck pegs it around $75MM.
  • The team’s plan is to shop Garrett Atkins for a frontline starter.  If the interest is not there (why would it be?), they could switch to Matt Holliday.  Renck ponders Matt Cain and a prospect to Colorado, but that is a lot to give up for one year of Holliday.  Plus the Giants are not looking to add an outfielder.
  • Dave Krieger of the Rocky Mountain News analyzes whether the Rockies could afford to re-sign Holliday.  He believes they could, but doesn’t expect them to go past five years.
  • Renck sees Clint Barmes as the starting second baseman heading into ’09.  Barmes could earn around $1.7MM as a first-time arbitration player.
  • Manager Clint Hurdle admitted his starters are more like #2-5s, so it’d be perfect to add a #1 and push them all back.  #1 starters are hard to come by, of course.
  • Yorvit Torrealba isn’t happy as a backup but the Rockies aren’t looking to trade him.  Meanwhile Willy Taveras is a non-tender candidate.
  • The Rockies hope to re-sign free agent Glendon Rusch.

Odds And Ends: Mientkiewicz, Michaels, Greinke, Soria, Scheppers

By Alejandro Leal | September 27, 2008 at 11:27am CDT

Some links for Saturday lunch, I’ll add some more as the day progresses:

  • The Mariners may sign the first woman general manager, Dodger’s assistant GM Kim Ng.
  • Pirates GM Neal Huntington says the team will approach Doug Mientkiewicz and Jason Michaels about resigning with the club, but has yet to do so.
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star ruffled some feathers by quoting a scout on the possibility of the Royals trading Joakim Soria and Zach Greinke. The discussion devolved into a debate on whether to move Soria to the rotation.
  • A Tanner Scheppers sighting: The Pirates draft pick has signed with the St. Paul Saints of the Independent Northern League.
  • Tigers’ owner Mike Ilitch hasn’t set (yet) a payroll limit for 2009. Along with the Mets, the Tigers had the second largest payroll behind the Yankees.
  • Grant at the McCovey Chronicles opens up a can of worms: On trading Matt Cain.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Tigers, Teixeira, Burnett

By Cork Gaines | September 26, 2008 at 3:33pm CDT

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere…

  • MVN Outsider takes a look at some potential offseason moves for the Tigers, including trading Magglio Ordonez and Gary Sheffield and signing Brian Fuentes.
  • Baseball Banter takes a look at the five teams most likely to go after Mark Teixeira this winter.
  • River Ave. Blues wonders if the Yankees should consider signing A.J. Burnett because of his strong career numbers against the Red Sox.
  • Pending Pinstripes takes a look at the Yankees 40-man roster and some potential offseason changes.

Odds and Ends: Patterson, Lowry, Alvarez

By Tim Dierkes | September 25, 2008 at 10:11am CDT

Today’s linkage…

  • Brewers fans, act quickly to snag free tickets to tonight’s game courtesy of Eric Gagne.  Nice gesture.
  • Of course Ned Colletti wants to re-sign Manny Ramirez.  It’s just a question of dollars and years. Does Manny get the rumored 4/100 he might desire?
  • The Jays locked manager Cito Gaston up through 2010.
  • Richard Griffin says the Blue Jays will be better for it if they lose A.J. Burnett.  Meanwhile, River Ave. Blues is open to the idea of the Yankees signing him.
  • No, Corey Patterson is not dating Dusty Baker’s daughter.  And Baker says he wasn’t behind the signing, either.
  • The Reds might not be in the market for a catcher this winter, if they go with Ryan Hanigan as the starter in ’09.
  • The Mariners officially founded the 100/100 club.
  • Peter Abraham sees the Yankees going with Brett Gardner as the center fielder in 2009.  Peter Gammons is "convinced he is going to be an everyday center fielder."
  • Sam Mellinger discusses a way to drastically shake up the Royals: trade both Zack Greinke and Joakim Soria for loads of young, cheap players.  As he notes, the strategy could work out but might cause a fan revolt.
  • Andrew Baggarly wonders if Noah Lowry’s injury problems could prevent a Matt Cain trade.  Also, Baggarly sees a non-tender in Kevin Correia’s future.
  • Frank Coonelly suggested Pedro Alvarez’s new deal is comparable in value to the original.  Scott Boras then jumped on the conference call to say it was a favorable change, and much different from the original.  Additionally, Coonelly contacted Baseball America’s Jim Callis to dispute the idea of a premeditated plan to negotiate with Alvarez after the deadline.
  • The Marlins will focus on improving their defense this winter.
