Pirates Announce Further Changes To Coaching Staff

One week after firing manager Derek Shelton, the Pirates have announced further changes to the coaching staff. Pittsburgh is bringing former manager Gene Lamont back to the organization to serve as a special advisor to newly tabbed manager Don Kelly. Triple-A manager Chris Truby is also being promoted to the big league staff and will hold the generic title of “major league coach” as well.

Truby, 51, appeared in parts of four major league seasons as an infielder. From 2000-03, he suited up for the Astros, Expos, Tigers and Devil Rays, playing in 263 big league contests. He played in parts of 15 minor league campaigns and finished his playing career with the Pirates in a 2007 season split between their Double-A and Triple-A levels. He began his coaching career shortly thereafter, taking a minor league role within the Pirates system. He’s since managed multiple minor league affiliates with the Phillies but returned to the Pirates in 2022. Minor league field coordinator and assistant director of coaching and player development Shawn Bowman will step in as the new Triple-A skipper in place of Truby.

The 78-year-old Lamont has spent eight years as a major league manager and a couple decades on big league coaching staffs. He helmed the White Sox from 1992-95 and the Pirates from 1997-2000. He’s served as a third base coach in the major leagues and was also the bench coach for both Jim Leyland and Brad Ausmus in Detroit. With eight years of MLB managerial experience — including 1993 AL Manager of the Year honors — and a 23-year coaching career on top of that, he’ll bring more than three decades of dugout experience to help Kelly acclimate to his new role.

Beyond the new additions. third base coach Mike Rabelo will “expand his role on the bench” and contribute to game-planning and in-game strategy. It seems he’ll pick up at least a portion of the duties held by now-former game-planning coach Radley Haddad, who was fired at the same time as Shelton.

Pirates To Make Coaching Staff Changes

NOVEMBER 24: Pittsburgh is promoting field coordinator Mike Rabelo to third base coach, Mackey reports (on Twitter). Rabelo also spent the 2020 season on staff as the Bucs’ assistant hitting coach. Previous third base coach Joey Cora was let go at the end of the season.

NOVEMBER 23: The Pirates are hiring Andy Haines to be their next hitting coach, reports Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Pittsburgh fired previous hitting instructor Rick Eckstein in August.

Haines, 44, has spent the past three seasons as the Brewers’ hitting coach and previously logged one year on the Cubs’ staff as assistant hitting coach. Milwaukee’s offense was a touch below average over the course of Haines’ tenure on staff. Going back to the start of 2019, Brewers’ hitters (excluding pitchers) have a .243/.328/.425 cumulative line. By measure of wRC+, that checks in two percentage points below the league average, ranking 18th of the league’s 30 teams. Milwaukee ranked 19th in that category in 2021 alone.

The Bucs’ front office and manager Derek Shelton are taking far more than the Brewers’ results into account when deciding on additions to the staff, of course. Haines will be tasked with guiding a Pirates lineup that’ll likely have its share of growing pains over the next few seasons. Pittsburgh’s .243/.317/.376 line this past season was 12 points below league average according to wRC+, the third-worst mark leaguewide. Highly-touted young players like Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz are expected to have key roles on the 2022 club, and their respective developments could go a long way towards determining how quickly the Bucs can return to competitiveness.

Tigers Notes: E-Jax, Reyes, Norris, Castro, Minor League Staff

Edwin Jackson’s on-field performance in his second stint with the Tigers hasn’t given fans much to cheer about — 8.58 ERA in 35 2/3 innings — but catcher Grayson Greiner called Jackson’s experience “invaluable,” when talking with MLB.com’s Jason Beck about the veteran right-hander’s role as a mentor. And while one would expect teammates to voice support for Jackson, Beck adds that a member of the opposing dugout also heaped praise onto Jackson. Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde called Jackson “one of my top five teammates I’ve ever been around” — a reference to the pair’s days together with the Cubs. “He’s a total pro and a class act, and there’s a reason why he’s been around so long and people want to have him around and always give him an opportunity, because he’s such a great guy,” said Hyde.

Whether that makes Jackson worthy of a roster spot on a rebuilding team when his struggles on the mound have been so pronounced is another debate — one the Tigers will surely have internally this winter. Beck notes that Detroit could have interest in re-signing Jackson to a minor league contract. Doing so would at least bring him to Spring Training with the team’s young players and could give them a veteran to bridge the gap to promising pitching prospects like Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Tarik Skubal and others — if he makes the roster.

More out of the Motor City…

  • Positive strides made by the trio of Victor Reyes, Daniel Norris and Harold Castro late in the 2019 season have most likely solidified their place on the 2020 roster, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News writes. Reyes, 25 next month, looked wholly overwhelmed as a Rule 5 pick in 2018, but he’s delivered a .299/.333/.415 slash line with a pair of homers, 14 doubles, three triples and six steals in 237 plate appearances since being recalled in 2019 — all while playing above-average defense in center. The Tigers began limiting Norris to three-inning outings last month, and he’s responded with a 3.86 ERA and a 21-to-7 K/BB ratio in 21 innings of work. He’s still been far too homer-prone in that time, but it’s an encouraging step forward for the former top prospect, who’ll likely command only a modest raise on this year’s $1.2MM salary in arbitration this winter. As for Castro, the 25-year-old has hit at a .305/.320/.399 clip in 333 plate appearances, although his paltry 2.7 percent walk rate and a .383 average on balls in play call into question the sustainability of that production.
  • Lynn Henning of the Detroit News reports that the Tigers have fired six minor league coaches, including Double-A hitting coach Brian Harper and minor league field coordinator Bill Dancy. The Tigers are still deciding the fate of Triple-A manager Doug Mientkiewicz, who is currently under contract through the 2020 season. Double-A skipper Mike Rabelo could be a potential replacement option for Mientkiewicz if Detroit opts not to bring him back, Henning adds.

Minor League Transactions: Vazquez, Rabelo, Calero

The focus at this point in the season is on major league transactions – trades, to be precise. But that doesn't mean the minor league transactions stop. Matt Eddy of Baseball America has the latest on the minor league transactions that occurred between July 6th and July 13th:

  • One year after posting a 1.95 ERA in 67 major league games, Kiko Calero finds himself a free agent once again. He signed with the Mets and then with the Dodgers, but the Dodgers released him after he posted a 3.00 ERA in 15 minor league appearances. Calero struck out 11 and walked seven in 15 innings.
  • The Tigers released Mike Rabelo, a backup catcher who spent parts of 2006-08 with Detroit. The 30-year-old struggled through 36 plate appearances at Triple A before the Tigers let him go.
  • Ramon Vazquez hit much better in the Astros' system than he did in the Mariners', but the Astros released the former Pirate anyways. The 33-year-old had a .900 OPS in 64 plate appearances.

  • Josh Johnson's agent Matt Sosnick is now "cautiously optimistic" about a potential long-term deal with the Marlins for his client, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. However, the two sides still have differing thoughts on the proper comparables to use for Johnson's 2010 salary.  I'd say Ben Sheets, Carlos Zambrano, and Zack Greinke might be used in that discussion, but given Johnson's $1.4MM salary in '09 he probably can't expect much more than $4.2MM. 
  • What do Tupac, Sandra Bullock, and MLBTR have in common?  They're all favorites of Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
  • Scott Lauber of The News Journal tweets that the Phillies signed righty Jason Standridge to a minor league deal.  The former Rays first-rounder pitched only 12.6 innings for the Marlins' Triple A club this year. 
  • Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports wrote last night that the Twins, Brewers, Mets, and Nationals have interest in free agent lefty Doug Davis.  Davis suggested to MLB.com's Bill Ladson that the Nats are more focused on adding a second baseman.
  • Roch Kubatko of MASN says Joe Crede "appears to top" the Orioles' free agent list.
  • The Mets signed lefty Bobby Livingston to a minor league deal, tweets MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.  The 27-year-old southpaw logged 156 innings of 4.15 ball at various minor league stops in 2009.
  • Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says players of Adam LaRoche's caliber should take note of his new deal, because "the offers aren't going to get any better."
  • Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post runs through Yorvit Torrealba's suitors, while also noting that Miguel Olivo's $2.5MM option for 2011 can become a player option with 110 games in '10.
  • Catcher Mike Rabelo is a new name among the Tigers' 17 minor league deals announced today, writes MLB.com's Jason Beck.
