Mariners Strongly Considering Adding Starter
SUNDAY, 11:50am: The Mariners have intensified their search for starting pitching, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The duo names Nate Robertson, Brian Tallet, and Manny Parra as a few left-handers who may be available while the M's wait for their own lefties (Lee and Erik Bedard) to return from injuries. FOX's Tracy Ringolsby adds (via Twitter) that the team had a scout on hand to watch Tim Redding pitch yesterday.
SATURDAY, 4:16pm: Fanhouse's Ed Price tweets that the Mariners are now strongly considering adding a starting pitcher due to Lee's injury. Price suggests that the addition would be a free agent or someone who was released from another organization.
THURSDAY, 12:12pm: The Mariners are "now again seriously considering Jarrod Washburn," tweets SI's Jon Heyman, even though he says the team is hoping to have Cliff Lee back by the third week of the season.
On Sunday, Washburn told ESPN's Mike Salk there have been "no recent conversations" between the Mariners and his agent Scott Boras. The added wrinkle is that Salk feels Washburn would need about four weeks to be game-ready.
Rockies Sign Tim Redding
The Rockies signed righty Tim Redding to a minor league deal, reports Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post. Renck notes that the Rockies nearly acquired Redding from the Nationals in a deal involving Willy Taveras, prior to the '09 season.
The Nats non-tendered Redding after he chewed up 182 innings for them in '08. The Mets signed him for $2.25MM in January, but his season was marred by shoulder and toe injuries. Redding, 32 in February, posted a 5.10 ERA, 5.7 K.9, and 3.8 BB/9 in 120 innings and was non-tendered once again.
The Rockies' 2010 rotation stacks up as Ubaldo Jimenez, Aaron Cook, Jason Hammel, Jorge de la Rosa, and Jeff Francis, with Redding providing insurance.

- Now that free agent Matt Capps appears to be leaning towards the Nationals, the Rockies are looking into other hurlers on the open market. A major league source tells Thomas Harding of MLB.com that the club is negotiating with free agent Tim Redding. The Rockies flirted with signing him last winter before he signed with the Mets, where he posted a 5.10 ERA in 30 games, including 17 starts.
- The group selected to purchase the Rangers could be in financial trouble, says Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports.
- Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com thinks that Mark DeRosa could become more valuable to suitors after Matt Holliday and Jason Bay sign, with few other big bats available.
- The Javier Vazquez trade can't be properly evaluated until the Braves spend all of the $8MM they saved in the deal, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Still, Rosenthal points out that the Braves should be concerned about the health histories of their free agent signings so far.
- Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe relays some details of John Lackey's contract with Boston, including an interesting conditional option: If an old elbow injury forces Lackey to miss significant time over the course of his contract, he'd have to play for the league minimum in 2015.
- Mark Carig of the Star-Ledger passes on this quote from Yankees GM Brian Cashman, regarding the team's outfield opening: "It won't be a big name situation. I can promise you that."
- Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik says that the two recent trades involving the Mariners and Blue Jays were "complete, separate entities," according to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.

- Rough day for Jose Arredondo. First it was announced that he would have surgery and miss 2010. Then right at the deadline, the Angels decided against tendering him an offer. Matt Brown and Dustin Moseley were given their walking papers as well.

- Josh Whitesell, though not arbitration-eligible, was non-tendered.

- Israel Gutierrez of the Miami Herald feels that the face of the Marlins' future is ace Josh Johnson. Gutierrez feels that the most critical move the Marlins need to make it locking up Johnson to a long-term deal. To quote Gutierrez: "If Hanley Ramirez was worth paying for, then Johnson is at least as important, if not more."
- David Lennon of Newsday has Tim Redding's take on the possibility of being released: "I'm not an idiot. I've been around the game long enough to know what's going on, with the way I've been used." Redding, however, remains with the Mets despite a 7.22 ERA.
- Felipe Lopez isn't thinking about the trade rumors surrounding him, according to Nick Piecoro. He's focused on helping Arizona. Piecoro says that the Brewers have expressed interest in the Arizona second basemen.
- It's been a hard weekend for the Giants, as the team's largest shareholder, Sue Burns, died at the age of 58 just a week after learning that she had cancer. Rich Aurilia had some kind words about Burns: "Being here for a while, I've known her family for a long time. They're great people to be around and always treated everyone on the team like a part of their own family, which is nice. You don't get that a lot from a lot of teams and owners. This is a huge loss not only for the Giants but everybody who knew her." Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Burns family, Giants organization, and Giants fans everywhere.
- Royals general manager Dayton Moore has given Trey Hillman his vote of confidence, stating that despite the club's struggles, Hillman will remain with the Royals for both this season and next. Says Moore: "We're all in this thing together… You just can't keep reshuffling." The Royals have lost 42 of their last 61 games.
Mets Ready To Release Redding?
6:42pm: Bart Hubbuch of The NY Post spoke to Mets vice president of player development Tony Bernazard, who said they "haven't spoken internally" about releasing Redding. Manager Jerry Manuel added that from his perspective, Redding was still in the team's plans.
1:14pm: As Rubin notes, Redding was in the Mets' clubhouse Saturday. A release could still be on the horizon, but might not go down until early next week.
10:08am: Adam Rubin of The NY Daily News spoke to a source who indicated that the Mets were ready to release righthander Tim Redding and eat what's left on the one year, $2.25MM deal he signed this winter. Redding has been dreadful for the Amazin's, allowing 86 baserunners and pitching to a 7.22 ERA in 52.1 IP this year.

- Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that Omar Minaya says the Mets won’t sign Pedro Martinez. Buster Olney was on this one earlier in the week, but that was before the Mets had to shut Tim Redding down because of weakness in his pitching shoulder.
- According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle Bobby Crosby played third and first yesterday in a Spring Training game. He had never played first before and had to borrow a glove. Playing well at many positions couldn’t hurt his trade value.
- We missed this one earlier in the week: Bill Shaikin of the LA Times asked Angels GM Tony Reagins if he has interest in Barry Bonds and heard he has "none."
- Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post reports that acting GM Mike Rizzo signed Julian Tavarez to the Nats because he wants depth and doesn’t want his players feeling too comfortable about their jobs.

Mets Sign Tim Redding
2:12pm: Troy Renck says Redding agreed in principle to a one-year, $2.25MM deal with the Mets.
1:12pm: According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Mets are close to signing Tim Redding to a one-year deal for $2.25MM plus incentives. Ken Davidoff of Newsday also has it, suggesting the deal is for about $2.5MM.
The Mets figure to add Derek Lowe or Oliver Perez as well. Not sure if this takes them out on Pedro Martinez. After signing Lowe or Perez the Mets may have the luxury of using Mike Pelfrey in the #5 role to limit his innings slightly.
