Trever Miller

Cardinals Working To Sign Trever Miller

By Tim Dierkes | November 21, 2008 at 5:24pm CDT

FRIDAY, 5:23pm: Negotiations continue between the Cardinals and Miller.

THURSDAY, 5:02pm: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch talked to Mozeliak, who said Miller’s deal has not been finalized.

THURSDAY, 8:42am: Rosenthal says it will be a two-year contract.  Correction to my earlier statement, Miller is not a Type B so the Rays will not get a pick.  Thanks to Mike A. for letting me know.

WEDNESDAY, 11:35pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Cardinals are in "serious discussions" with Miller, and would sign him to a one or two-year deal.

10:45pm: According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals signed lefty reliever Trever Miller (pending a physical).  GM John Mozeliak said southpaw relievers were flying off the shelves, so he acted quickly.  It’s a bit of a surprise in that the Cards were said to be targeting Will Ohman and Arthur Rhodes.

Miller, 35, posted a 4.15 ERA in 43.1 innings for the Rays this year.  He held lefties to a .209/.305/.308 line.  Earlier this month, the Rays chose Miller’s $400K buyout over a $2MM option.  Miller was a Type B free agent, so the Rays will get a sandwich pick for their loss.

Reds Hope To Add Lefty Reliever

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 20, 2008 at 11:07pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, Reds GM Walt Jocketty wants to add a lefty to the Reds bullpen. Jocketty says the Reds considered Trever Miller before it became apparent that he was close to a deal with the Cardinals.

To build the bullpen back up, Jocketty said the Reds would consider Arthur Rhodes, Will Ohman, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes and Joe Beimel. Cincinnati could use a reliever since ex-Red Jeremy Affeldt signed with the Giants earlier in the week.

The Reds have talked about bringing back two of their own free agents, David Weathers and Mike Lincoln.

Teams are more interested in talking about trades now that some free agent price tags seem so high, according to Jocketty.

Astros Rumors: Wolf, Hawkins, Hampton

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2008 at 11:15pm CDT

MLB.com’s Alyson Footer has the latest Astros buzz.

  • Astros GM Ed Wade will meet with Randy Wolf’s agents tomorrow, but doesn’t expect an agreement to be reached before the exclusive negotiating period ends.  Wolf will test the open market, and the Mets are already known to be interested.
  • Talks are ongoing with the agents for Doug Brocail and LaTroy Hawkins.  Brocail is a Type A free agent, and the Astros already declined a $3.25MM option on him.
  • Wade met with Mike Hampton’s agent recently.  Hampton could return to Houston on an incentive-laden contract.
  • Wade is on the lookout for a second-tier catcher to complement Humberto Quintero.
  • MLB.com’s Jim Molony wonders if the Astros will try to bring lefty Trever Miller back.

Rays Decline Options On Floyd, Miller

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 3:06pm CDT

According to Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays declined their 2009 options on Cliff Floyd and Trever Miller.

For Floyd, the Rays chose a $250K buyout over his $2.75MM option.  He may decide to retire.  For Miller, the Rays chose his $400K buyout over a $2MM option.  Miller is a Type B free agent, but the Rays don’t figure to offer him arbitration.  The Rays may be in the market for a lefty reliever and DH/right fielder this winter.

Odds and Ends: Hinske, Doumit, Colon, Greene

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2008 at 12:05pm CDT

It’s up to an impressive 5.7 degrees where I am, but I still don’t think I’ll be going outside much today.  Hence, some odds and ends.

  • Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald believes Eric Hinske might sign with the Diamondbacks this week.  The 30 year-old former ROY has a career line of .255/.336/.434, with much better work against righties.
  • John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus says the Red Sox are interested in the Pirates’ Ryan Doumit.  However Perrotto says the Bucs are reluctant to trade the versatile Doumit, who turns 27 in April.  Only past Doumit rumor I can find was from Will Carroll in May of ’06, saying he and Oliver Perez were being dangled to the Phillies.
  • Perrotto believes the Royals could sign Bartolo Colon if he’ll take a one-year deal; that may be true for several clubs.  Paul Hoynes reports that the Indians watched Colon pitch, but weren’t impressed with his sub-90 velocity.  Hoynes says Kris Benson will have another throwing session and the Tribe will be in attendance.
  • According to Marc Topkin, the Rays are talking with lefty reliever Trever Miller.  The two sides haven’t agreed on the term yet.
  • Padres GM Kevin Towers commented about the team’s rejected long-term overtures toward shortstop Khalil Greene.  Towers brought a three or four year proposal to Greene but does not expect anything to get done.  He stated Greene’s possible desire to be on the East Coast as a factor.
  • Vince Gennaro does an economic analysis of the Johan Santana rumors, indicating that the acquisition makes the most sense for the Mets.

Arbitration Decisions

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2007 at 2:20am CDT

Free agents’ decisions on whether to accept their teams’ offers of arbitration are rolling in.

  • Eric Gagne told the Red Sox that he won’t their offer of arbitration.  The Boras camp had sent signals otherwise, but it was an idle threat.  He wants that multiyear deal or at least a chance to close.  The Red Sox get a delicious sandwich pick for their dalliance with Gagne.  Could’ve been more, if Gagne was lights out for them and snagged Type A status.
  • Mark Loretta accepted; Trever Miller declined.  Loretta should make $3MM+ to take on a utility role.  The Astros could always still trade him to a team looking for second base help.  As for Miller, he could still return.  The Astros will get a sandwich pick if he leaves.
  • Ron Mahay declined the Braves’ offer.  No surprise since he’s looking for three years.  You have to consider their sandwich pick as an added benefit of the Teixeira trade.
  • Aaron Rowand is expected to decline, which is a formality since he’s going to get at least three years.  As a Type A, the Phils probably hope he ends up with the Yankees somehow.

Yankees Bullpen Situation

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2007 at 1:38pm CDT

It’s well-known the Yankees want to improve their bullpen.  There’s been talk of converting young minor league starters into relief for 2008.  Otherwise, who’s on the radar?

  • A reliever could be acquired for Hideki Matsui – Tyler Kepner suggests Jonathan Sanchez or Kevin Correia.  Brad Hennessey is another possibility.
  • Kepner says the Yanks checked in on LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and Trever Miller but haven’t made offers.  However, Mark Feinsand says the Yanks are talking to Hawkins about a one-year deal worth between $3.25-3.5MM.
  • Luis Vizcaino is probably out of the picture.  George King adds Jeremy Affeldt to the list of free agents the Yanks are checking out.
  • Peter Abraham says the Yanks are competing with the Royals for Mahay and that it might take three years, $9MM.  Pete Caldera recently said Mahay wants three years and $12MM though.  Bob Dutton notes that it’s Mahay’s agents pushing the Royals; they have little interest.
  • Rob Biertempfel says the Yankees and Astros have interest in acquiring Damaso Marte from the Bucs.  George King says John Grabow interests the Yanks as well.

Rangers Rumors: Bay, Gagne, Fukudome

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2007 at 10:34pm CDT

T.R. Sullivan has the Rangers goods for us this evening.  Wow, did MLB.com send 30+ reporters out to Nashville?

  • The Rangers are still pursuing Eric Gagne to return as their closer (and then maybe they’d flip him again).  The interest is mutual.
  • The team is also considering LaTroy Hawkins, Shawn Chacon, Luis Vizcaino, Trever Miller, and Octavio Dotel.  Basically, most of the relief market.  Problem is, the Rangers don’t want to give more than one year to any of these guys.
  • The Rangers are moving toward filling center field internally after exploring options.  Carlos Gomez, Felix Pie, and Carlos Gonzalez proved unavailable or too pricey (though if all the Mets wanted for Gomez was Gerald Laird, Daniels should’ve pounced).
  • Daniels has shifted gears to a corner outfielder.  Kosuke Fukudome remains on the radar.
  • The Rangers had a preliminary conversation with the Bucs about Jason Bay.
  • The team isn’t focused on getting pitching for once, but Daniels is still perusing medical reports on Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, and Jason Jennings.
  • Daniels said he’s not shopping Hank Blalock.

Today’s Arbitration Decisions

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2007 at 12:18pm CDT

The decision whether to offer your own free agent arbitration can affect your team in two ways: you may end up retaining a player you didn’t want, or you may score a draft pick or two as compensation.  With that in mind let’s run down the rumors regarding some Type A and B free agents.

  • The Red Sox plan on offering arbitration to Type B Eric Gagne.  Worst case scenario, they hang onto him for one more year.  Best case, they get a sandwich pick.
  • The Astros have to decide on Trever Miller and Mark Loretta.  Both are Type Bs, but the Astros might not want them back.  Richard Justice notes that the old Astro regime made a mistake not offering arbitration to Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte.
  • The Angels decided not to offer arby to Bartolo Colon, because the most they could give him would be a 20% pay cut.  So best case scenario they could get him for one year, $11.2MM.  Colon is not a Type A or B, so there’s no compensation regardless.
  • The Phils will offer arb to Aaron Rowand but not Freddy Garcia.  Rowand is a Type A, Garcia a Type B.  It’s a no-brainer with Rowand, who will hopefully net them a first-round pick plus a supplemental depending on who he signs with.  With Garcia they risked getting burned as he might’ve accepted.
  • The D’Backs will offer arbitration to Livan Hernandez, who will likely decline it to pursue a three-year deal.  He’s a Type B so they’ll snag a sandwich pick.
  • The Padres will offer arbitration to Michael Barrett, and Kevin Towers actually hopes he accepts.  No worries if he doesn’t – Barrett is a Type A.  The Friars will also offer arby to Mike Cameron and Doug Brocail.  Brocail nets them a sandwich pick for sure; Cameron still has a slight chance of accepting.
  • The Braves did not offer arb to Andruw Jones but did for Ron Mahay.  Both are Type Bs; I’m surprised they didn’t want to risk Andruw returning on a one-year deal.
