Angels Interested In Ruben Sierra

Hold on to your hats, kids - the Angels almost acquired Ruben Sierra the other day.  The L.A. Times has made it known that the Halos need a lefty bat off the bench and are willing to part with Esteban Yan or Kevin Gregg.  Apparently one of those two intrigues the Twins enough to toss Sierra their way.

That plan may have been dashed by Sierra's strained hamstring, however.  At this point it's possible that the Twinkies release him and give his spot to Jason Kubel (fantasy leaguers, take note).  If Sierra isn't released, he'll start the season on the DL.  So the Angels may have to look for another trading partner for their swap.

Halos Heaven also indicates that Tampa Bay could make a play for one of the relievers.  Yan was decent for the D-Rays back in 2001-02, and the loss of Shinji Mori creates a need.

In addition, the Angels plan to trade Chris Bootcheck early in the season for whatever needs arise.  The 27 year-old righty has only seen 29 innings of Major League action.  The former college pick has been a disappointment thus far, posting a 5.42 ERA in his fourth try at Triple A.

Why would the Angels want a has been like Ruben Sierra when guys like Kendry Morales and Dallas McPherson are around?

Bizaar. GM Bill Stoneman has so much young talent and is the envy of baseball, yet he always seems reluctant to use it or trade it.

He's no Kenny Williams.

So Stoneman is going to trade a serviceable (if not spectacular) pitcher to get a Social Security-eligible Sierra who he could have gotten FOR FREE a few months ago?

Geez, someone really needs to see if Bill Stoneman and Larry Himes are in fact the same person.

If they need a lefty bat why not just wait for Choi to be released

I like Kyle's thinking. I'm still in the camp that says Choi is a good player. The Angels could use a guy who actually has some patience at the plate.

And to repsond to CubsAddict, the Angels would at least be dumping a little salary by trading Yan. But, I agree, trading for Sierra doesn't make much sense.

Any team would trade Yan the dude sucks. We ran the expierment here in the LOU.The dude sweats like he's gonna melt and he doesn't have any control.
By the way Cubs suck!!!

Kev, excellent post.

The Cubs do suck.

Not to sound racist or anything, but could it have anything to do with his being Spanish speaking?

I know that many of the acquisitions of the Angeles the last couple years have been players who would be more accepted within the Latino community; which surrounds the playing field in Anaheim.

It could be coincidence, but I think Morales is playing marketing games with the club. The whole “LA Angeles of Anaheim” being one of them.
