« Dodgers Acquire Greg Maddux | Main | Julio Lugo Traded To Dodgers »
MetsBlog confirms Scott Miller's earlier scenario: the Mets have sent Oliver Perez and Heath Bell to San Diego for Scott Linebrink.
UPDATE: Seems that all outlets are backing off this deal; it had been reported everywhere. Reportedly, Omar Minaya recently appeared on SportsNet New York and said rumors of the Linebrink deal are not true.

Wow, great for the mets. No clue what Towers is thinking.

mets turn nady into linebrick, wow thats some great work
Posted by: man ram is the man | July 31, 2006 at 03:12 PM
desperate trade for the mets. Sanchez injury really hurt any chance for a starter.
Posted by: const56 | July 31, 2006 at 03:13 PM
So, let's recap:
Kearns and Lopez for Majewsky and Bray.
Nady (who dreams of being the player Kearns is) for Hernandez and Linebrink.
I hate to admit it but my respect for Minaya is increasing...
Posted by: bobo | July 31, 2006 at 03:14 PM
Please be aware that Linebrink has some arm problems. He has lost velosity and has been knocked around like a pinata the last 2 weeks.

I think Krivsky loves his average to mediocre relievers in the same way that Dusty Baker loves his middle infielders that can't hit.

In the span of 2 hours (since it was posted) the Mets replace Sanchez with Linebrink and Hernendez..Just another case to prove Minaya is GM of the year
Posted by: MLB Insider | July 31, 2006 at 03:15 PM
bobo: its because he is starting to prove himself
Posted by: wood34 | July 31, 2006 at 03:16 PM

WFAN in New York reports the Mets have not confirmed trading Perez and Bell for Linebrink
Posted by: MLB Insider | July 31, 2006 at 03:30 PM
The only infomation that WFAN got was from a caller saying that it was on CBS sportsline, i rather trust what this site says then the ginny russo says, anyone from new york knows what i mean
Posted by: NYCBOY21 | July 31, 2006 at 03:45 PM
Russo is getting the information from the Mets. The Mets have announced they have nothing else to report today. The Linebrink deal hasn't been reported yet.
Posted by: MLB Insider | July 31, 2006 at 03:47 PM
Is the deal final or not? I'm hearing it is and some people are saying it didn't happen
Posted by: Peter | July 31, 2006 at 03:51 PM
this and metsblog are the only places i've seen it
Posted by: wood34 | July 31, 2006 at 04:04 PM
It said it on ESPN news too I think
Posted by: Peter | July 31, 2006 at 04:10 PM
I'm hearing that someone jumped the gun...

where's therealerik bashing Omar now?
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 31, 2006 at 04:12 PM
ESPNews has been reporting it for the last hour and a half and SNY(the Mets network) just mentioned the report of the Mets getting Linebrink.
Posted by: nom3k | July 31, 2006 at 04:16 PM
I'm so confused right now
Posted by: Peter | July 31, 2006 at 04:16 PM
"where's therealerik bashing Omar now?"
Omar did well, all things considered.
I'm actually glad we kept Perez. Love his upside. Nady is barely an average corner with the stick, and below average with the glove. What are your thoughts on all this, Roto?
Posted by: TheRealErik | July 31, 2006 at 04:17 PM
I'm not sure. Perez is a bit iffy wouldn't you say?
Posted by: Peter | July 31, 2006 at 04:21 PM
"Perez is a bit iffy wouldn't you say?"
If Rick Peterson is good at anything, it's fixing mechanics. His upside is 10x Nady's. I'll take my chances.
Posted by: TheRealErik | July 31, 2006 at 04:24 PM
Who can he be compared to if he reaches his potential?
Posted by: Peter | July 31, 2006 at 04:28 PM
Perez? What are his comps?
Posted by: TheRealErik | July 31, 2006 at 04:31 PM
Good Job by Omar. But the Pads did get a pitcher who still has a chance to be an ace
Posted by: cards19 | July 31, 2006 at 04:35 PM
I think Omar Minaya confirmed that Linebrink deal did not go down and the Mets still have Perez. I think he said it on SNY
Posted by: Peter | July 31, 2006 at 04:39 PM
Linebrink deal did not go down. Some facts:
We do not know the extent of Sanchez's injury. He might be gone for the year, but when they say "year" they may mean "regular season". If he can come back for the playoffs, the addition of Hernandez gives the Mets an even better bullpen. Perez will not factor into this year, we'll see if they can fix him. If so, he will make for nice trade fodder next season.
The Mets were not going to make a move and the Mets faithful were ready to kill Omar for that, so this might be a blessing in disguise. Bottom line, this should prove that if they Mets "need" to do something they can do it at will, but if they "want" to do something they are very smart and strategic, and understand the market. Omar Minaya is the best GM in baseball. He is proving it every month (he actually got someone to take Matsui, he signed basically this whole team, and has managed to hold onto every good prospect). Go Mets!

This was an amazing pickup for the mets. Nady wasnt that good at all. And Chavez/Milledge can play better defensively and probobly offensively.
Perez is a great pickup. He has amazing upside. He is a potential ace. Perez is far from trade fodder.
How bout 12 wins, with 2.98era and 239K is 196 ininings.
Those were Perez's numbers in 04. Granted that was his rookie year, but if he gets helped he should be a great #2 and potential an ace.
