According to Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are close to signing southpaw reliever Jamie Walker to a three-year, $10MM pact. Walker has been solid since coming to the Tigers in 2002.
Should the Orioles close the deal, the White Sox and Tigers will have to look elsewhere for top-notch lefty relievers. Alan Embree, Steve Kline, Darren Oliver, and Mike Stanton may be the best options.
Here's my 2007 Team Outlook for Baltimore. They'll probably add more relief help, a starter, and some 1B/LF types. They snagged one possibility today. The O's would have to increase payroll past $80MM to make it work.

Jaime Walker fleeced the Orioles. Then again, the O's seem like an organization that loves getting fleeced.

Seems like a good signing.

A marginal aging lefty for $3.3 million is testy. I can think of a lot of better things to do with that money, but the O's do need the pitching...

Very good move by the O's. The money isn't an issue, filling a major need is what they needed to accomplish. Nice to see them starting early!

The market for a guy like Walker is too thin to not overpay. Boy, is the AL East just coming out firing or what? Everyone but Toronto (unless I'm forgetting something they did) has made some noteworthy moves so far.

Isn't that funny. Just as you say that Frank Thomas signs with the Jays.

I'd get this signing if I thought the O's were one or two moves away from contention...

anybody who thinks jamie walker isnt a franchise player any team would want to have the oppurtunity to build around has no credibility in my book

Good Point, Walker is going to put the O's over the top in 2007.

Jamie Walker and Chad Bradford were my top two FA middle relievers in this year's bunch. They were both really good last year and have had other very good seasons in the past. That said, I'm not sure that I like this signing by the O's.
Baltimore is certainly not close to being competative in that division, so spending $10M and committing 3 years to a complementary piece like a non-closer RP on the wrong side of 30 seems a little foolish. They'd have to go out, make some creative moves and spend some serious cash in free agency to have this make sense. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

You have Bradford over Speier? Speier put up comparable numbers in the AL East that Bradford did in the NL...that said, Bradford does look like a close 2nd. I'd sure like to have him back; he showed this year he can hold his own against lefties, which had always been his problem.
Though I'd love to know how he went from his career BAA vs lefties of .309 to .250 in one season...especially since he got pounded by lefties in 2005 for Boston.

One step forward, two steps back. Signing Walker is a good move for the O's, amongst a dozen horrible ones. With the exception of Ray, Britton was the by far the best RP the O's had last year. And we trade him away for a washed up back of the rotation starter? I mean really. Britton was the only solid set up guy in the O's pen. No one else had a WHIP under 1.5. The O's claim that the main focus of offseason is stocking the pen, but trade away a 23 year old who was clearly their best non-closer in his rookie season.
I think Walker will be a nice addition, but after trading Britton, the O's are right back to where they started.
