Cards Still In On Weaver

UPDATE: Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says negotiations have "intensified" between Weaver and the Cards.  Walt Jocketty indicated that Weaver is the only possible addition to the rotation at this point.  His limit for Weaver is two years.

With Carpenter, Wells, Reyes, Wainwright, Thompson, Mulder, and Franklin, I think the Cardinals can cobble together a respectable rotation in the NL Central this year.  However, Walt Jocketty said today that he's still in conversations with Jeff Weaver's people.

On one hand, the Boras group drives a hard bargain.  On the other, St. Louis may be the best place for Weaver to get his career back on track.  My guess?  Jocketty probably wants him for something like two years and $16 million.

2 years & $16MM? Are you telling me this guy is going to get as good of a contract as last year even though he was terrible? I know the market's gone up, but it's insane when a pitcher does terrible & gets a contract like that.

He did much better after coming to St. Louis, and he was very successful in the postseason. With a full season in the NL Central and more time under Dave Duncan, he could put up numbers easily worth 8 mil/yr in this market.

Weaver sucks, but to be honest, there is a part of me that would be slightly intrigued if he would take 2 years at $16 million.

This of course is only becuz I have Dave Duncan.

The only other pitching coach I MIGHT give him a shot with is Mazzone.

I think Peterson does his best work with lefties, while Dave Duncan seems to work magic with righties, and Mazzone seems neutral.

Weaver is only intresting becuz he has decent stuff and can go 200 innings.

When Lilly and Meche are getting the money they are getting, Weaver at 16 for 2 becomes interesting.

Lilly and Meche both had far better seasons than Weaver last year.

I hope they hurry up and sign him so Omar can't...

That won't happen Jersey...Boras is going to take his time and try to get teams to raise their price for Weaver, and the Cards won't be interested in playing that game. He either signs a bigger contract with someone like the Mets now, or he signs with the Cards later.

I know this post is like a month old but I just read that Weaver wants 40 mil over 4. Thats laughable to me, but hopefully some other team doesn't jump in. I woulud be content with even a little more than you all were talking about at maybe...20/2.
I wouldn't mind waiting a couple more months though. I don't even think we need to sign him before spring training starts.
