Rangers Give Sammy A Look

Sammy! Sammy Sosa worked out at Ameriquest today in hopes of securing a gig with Texas, where it all began.  Sosa had some awesome teammates back when he was on the '89 Rangers as a 20 year old.  Here's a partial list of his mentors:

Ruben Sierra
Rafael Palmeiro
Julio Franco
Pete Incaviglia
Buddy Bell
Juan Gonzalez
Thad Bosley
Dean Palmer
Wilson Alvarez
Kevin Brown
Charlie Hough
Jamie Moyer
Kenny Rogers
Nolan Ryan

take an even closer look at that team and you'll see 17 would-be all-stars with 61 combined appearances...break up the '89 rangers!

i dont believe that that card of sammy squaring around for a bunt is really sammy soa.
i REFUSE to belivee it

I have that Leaf card with Sammy bunting. Cost me a pretty penny, but I busted enough to get a Griffey RC and a Maddux. Three bucks a pack was a lot of money to an eight year old!

That Leaf set was on of the prettiest sets of that era, I still have the entire set in a binder, talk about bringing back a lot of childhood card collecting memories...

As for that '89 Rangers team, it watch the A's win the World Series that year ;) Said as an A's fan that was 7 that year...

I don't believe Sammy is the one in the '90 Score. He'd have to have used 'roids or something to bulk up like he was in recent years.

do kids collect baseball cards anymore?

thats sad if that era is over. Sure they have cards but kids can no longer afford them.

Last set I could afford to collect pack by pack was Collector's Choice from Upper Deck, I think it was '95. 99 cents a pack.

Now the cheap ones are $2 for ten cards. But you still get 8 commons.

Actually, they seem to have made it a bit better as of late. My girlfriend got into buying cards so of course we got a ton.

You can get a bunch of different packs for about a buck, and although they don't come with as many cards as they used to (7-10 seems average) what I have found is that the sorting is much better. If you buy a box from Target or Walmart it will come with no doubles, so gone are the days of sifting through 15 Trevor Wilsons and 14 Alex Coras just to find the one Nolan Ryan. A box is about $20 and has between 10-20 packs depending on if its premium or not, and many of the sets seem to be able to be made in two boxes. (most sets are less than 400 cards now)

2 boxes at about $40 to make a set is still below what we used to pay to have 600 duplicates just to be missing about 200 cards still... Plus most packs have an insert of some kind or a very good ratio of them and many boxes come with a Jersey card or something comparable, its kind of fun again.

We have sets, jersey cards, numbered cards, star cards, autographed cards and more plus have probably still spent only a fraction of what I would have as a kid in one year (those 49 cent packs added up fast)

Oh, forgot to say 'HaHa' to the Rangers...

Why won't Sosa just go away already, I thought Japan offered him over a million and a chance to play - take it you fool!

Rangers know that if Sammy has a solid spring, they have to put him on the opening day roster. Maybe it will sell more tickets.

Awful...
