Ken Rosenthal again. The Phillies just traded for Reds starter Kyle Lohse. They gave up 23 year-old Double A southpaw Matt Maloney. With both Kyle Kendrick and J.D. Durbin in the rotation, the Phils had to try something.
Wayne Krivsky did well here, as Maloney was the Phillies' ninth best prospect entering the seasona according to Baseball America. He's more about deception and pitch selection that velocity or electric stuff. His upside is pegged as a #4 starter.
Lohse has been an enigma - quite good in April and July, awful in May and June. Tom Koch-Weser of the STATS, Inc. blog may have unraveled the mystery somewhat.

Good god why?

ditto

What a great move for the Phil's! I think Lohse could become a great pitcher, and they didn't give up much a tall for him..
Posted by: Bosox4416 | July 30, 2007 at 02:47 PM
Good gamble for the Phils.
Posted by: SBE | July 30, 2007 at 02:48 PM
That ditto is to arodsucksatlife. Might not be the worst move ever but Lohse in that ballpark has HR written all over it. I doubt Lohse gives them enough to help that they do not wish they still had Maloney.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 30, 2007 at 02:49 PM
good gamble, but I doubt he'll ever be great like Bosox said
Posted by: wood34 | July 30, 2007 at 02:50 PM
Lohse a great pitcher.....
stop and think about that for a second.
If the Twins gave up on this guy, there's no way he does anything of significance for the Phils. Okay move but he doesn't improve their team one bit.
He's not hard to figure out, get a few runs off of him and his confidence crumbles.
Posted by: JoeM | July 30, 2007 at 02:51 PM
wow, where did this come from?
This is a great deal for Philly if thats all they gave up! I cant believe Atl couldnt better that since they have been so actively shopping for pitching...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 02:52 PM
Nice little deal for Philadelphia although the HRs will probably continue to come with his GB% in Citizens Bank Park.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | July 30, 2007 at 02:53 PM
Lohse is a poor fit for Citizens Bank Park but he should be an upgrade over whoever the Phils are throwing out there on day 4 and 5. The Phils also prevented the Braves from picking Lohse up.
Posted by: ABravesFan | July 30, 2007 at 02:55 PM
Mets and the Braves are gonna like Kyle Lohse, we miss him over hear in the AL so much. Especially when the Twins had Santana, Radke and another pitcher I can't place at the moment. Catching Lohse was a like cathing a forfeited game.
Posted by: JoeM | July 30, 2007 at 02:57 PM
Great American Ballpark has played only marginally less HR-friendly than CBP this year (1.435 for CBP, 1.427 for GAB).
Lohse has managed a 2.57 ERA in 9 home starts this year. he's given up 5 HR in 63 IP at home versus 11 HR in 68.2 IP on the road.

ROFL good job reds thank god that head case is gone.
Posted by: Muggerd | July 30, 2007 at 03:02 PM
Being able to see all the Cincy games here, I can tell you that Lohse has the stuff to be awesome. He is just terribly inconsistent. That said, the reds provide little run support and the whole dysfunctional clubhouse in the first half had it's effect. I think Lohse could be a really good closer, if some team would give him the chance.
Posted by: wakefield | July 30, 2007 at 03:03 PM
Lohse is a great pitcher with a horrible head between his shoulders. Same reason the twins got rid of him.
Posted by: Muggerd | July 30, 2007 at 03:05 PM
I just don't get this move. I don't see how he'll be much better than Durbin, which is who I'd imagine him pushing out of the rotation.
They seem like the same kind of pitcher- hit or miss, gem or junk. Just another move I've painfully grown to see the Phillies make. I don't really mind giving up just Maloney though.
Posted by: no funny hats | July 30, 2007 at 03:06 PM
Lohse's numbers are also skewed from some terrible starts against AL teams. and not to point out the obvious, but the Phils aren't going to be playing any AL teams any time soon. his NL-only numbers are 112.7 IP, 1.23 WHIP, 3.59 ERA, 5.52 K/9, 1.92 BB/9, 0.88 HR/9.

JoeM,
“Mets and the Braves are gonna like Kyle Lohse, we miss him over hear in the AL so much. Especially when the Twins had Santana, Radke and another pitcher I can't place at the moment. Catching Lohse was a like cathing a forfeited game”
… I’m thinking maybe Eric Milton ~ man I hated facing that guy!
But, I do think Lohse is better than he once was in the AL-C and that he is now a solid backend type for those NL teams that need one ~ and he came really cheap, which blows me away! Not a bad pickup at all in my mind…
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 03:27 PM
I think you're right it was Milton.
I've read that Lohse's value is better as a reliever. So maybe they should move him to a setup role or something. Regardless after seeing Lohse struggle for years, I don't see him automatically becoming a "great" pitcher like some of these other posters. The Phils should be able to get him into some pressure situations so we'll see how he reacts but he hasn't really pitched in meaningful baseball games since he left the Twins.
Posted by: JoeM | July 30, 2007 at 03:38 PM
Yeah, he's not a "great pitcher" ~ but he is a "great deal" for their 4th or 5th spot considering they gave up nothing really...
I really would have liked to see Atl or Stl get him though, those two teams will be much more interesting to watch in the coming weeks than Philly who seems to do whatever they can to fall off right before the playoffs start...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 04:00 PM
While you're right about the Phils generally falling darkstar, they're playing good ball lately. I don't see what Lohse would do for St. Louis, they're not going anywhere this year.
Posted by: no funny hats | July 30, 2007 at 04:17 PM
no funny hats,
Yeah, you would think but all of a sudden they are creeping up the standings in that weak division. They are currently only 6 out and their only problems really come in the Starting Pitching. I think if they came up with an arm or two they might surprise us...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 05:22 PM
But isn't that the same situation that the Phillies are in? Third in a division where its really going to be a two horse race? There seems to be one team that pulls this one every year, but I don't know if they can get past both the Cubs and Brewers.
Posted by: no funny hats | July 30, 2007 at 08:50 PM
Ugh, I completely forgot the Phillies are in second as of right now, pretty much nullifying my entire statement.
Posted by: no funny hats | July 30, 2007 at 08:51 PM
No biggy NFHats, I get what youre saying :) Besides, Phi is kinda tied for 2nd/3rd at the moment when you think of it as such a long season ~ being within a game or two is nothing yet...
Nah, I think the Phils are making their normal "looky, looky ~ we are playing good" before the face-plant thing... Not that I'm trying to really knock the team, but that has pretty much how it’s been every year ~ ya know?
I doubt Stl would be able to do it, but give them a starter or two and they might make it really interesting ~ and interesting is what I like seeing!
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 09:25 PM
I know exactly what the Phils are trying to pawn off right now, and I'm not buying the con-scheme this time. They've shown nothing to make them look like legitimate contenders.
But on the Cards, I've just never been impressed with them. I see what you're saying though, and it makes sense because pitching's been hell this year for them, hasn't it?
Posted by: no funny hats | July 30, 2007 at 10:09 PM
Viewed in a vacuum, it's a great deal for the Phils. Unfortunately, it means that they won't move Brett Myers back into the rotation, which will likely cost them a playoff bid.
Posted by: ColonelTom | July 30, 2007 at 11:25 PM
NFHats,
"and it makes sense because pitching's been hell this year for them, hasn't it"
~ yeah, “Hell” is kind of an understatement even...
Mulder = nothing done on the field
Carp = nothing done on the field
Wainwright = 4.45 ERA (20 starts)
Looper = 4.85 ERA (19 starts)
Wells = 5.72 ERA (19 starts)
Reyes = 6.11 ERA (13 starts)
Wellemeyer = 4.19 ERA (8 starts)
Thompson = 5.15 ERA (13 starts)
Maroth = 9.20 ERA (6 starts) ~ I thought he might have been a good pickup; wow, he fit right in with the rest of them though…
I mean, to be only 6 games out with that as your staff you have to wonder what could have been with even 1 respectable guy… Give them Lohse and maybe a Towers type and they could actually sneak up there for a couple days! Doubt they will be there at the end, but would make the series where Mil/Stl/Chi play eachother so much fun to watch!
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 11:41 PM
and:
"I know exactly what the Phils are trying to pawn off right now, and I'm not buying the con-scheme this time"
...HAHAHA ~ I can feel your pain...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 30, 2007 at 11:42 PM
Colonel, Myers going back to the rotation wasn't an option. That was part of the deal when he agreed to go the pen. He won't be back until at least next year, and even that is speculative.
Posted by: no funny hats | July 31, 2007 at 12:21 AM
NFH, how can you claim that the Phillies have done nothing to warrant being legitimate contenders? Since starting 4-11, they are 52-38, despite losing three starters to the bullpen/injuries and having no bullpen to speak of since Myers/Gordon went down in May.
Posted by: Ben Rivera | July 31, 2007 at 12:43 AM
If I was to answer that for him:
A black-hole at 3B & C, 1 real starter, a pitiful bullpen and absolutely nothing as far as a bench goes would be a good place to start IMO…
Not that they are a horrible team, but relying on Hamels, Utley, Howard and Rollins to win nearly every game for you can only last so long…
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 31, 2007 at 01:31 AM
The bottom line is that Lohse is a Boras client and is working on a one year deal. The Reds had no intention of re-signing him, and yet they still got a nice left-handed prospect in return. I truly thought they would have to settle for less than they actually received. Krivsky possibly wins a trade? Time will tell.
