Red Sox Scouting Eckstein?
UPDATE: A few Cardinal fans have emailed me, suggesting that Hrabosky's comments about Eckstein may have been misconstrued as a trade rumor. Apparently he was just discussing scouting and how Eckstein was a talent from the Boston system. I have to be careful with broadcast rumors I did not hear myself; my aplogies.
Tonight, color commentator Al Hrabosky mentioned on the FSN Midwest broadcast that the Red Sox were scouting David Eckstein. Eckstein led off tonight in the Cardinals' defeat of the Brewers.
Eckstein is hitting .298/.339/.362 this year for the Cardinals, not too far from career levels. He's spent some time on the DL this year with back pain. The elfish 32 year-old is part of a weak free agent crop for shortstops that also includes Omar Vizquel, Juan Uribe, and Cesar Izturis (most likely).
The Red Sox, however, are locked in with Julio Lugo through 2010. Lugo hasn't been hitting much in the past week but his bat finally came alive this month with an .875 OPS.

Well that doesn't make any sense. Could it maybe have been the White Sox, not the Red Sox?

Surely not, but I don't see why the Red Sox would want him either.

Al Hrabosky said it on FSN Midwest. He said he saw a Red Sox scout at the game and said they were scouting Eck. Mostly just an observation and a guess, nothing detailed.

Maybe the sox see, World Series MVP, and like the idea of having the backup plan for the playoffs. I don't see it being that far fetched because eck won't cost much to obtain

He may not cost much, but there isn't roster space for him unless they move alex cora, but I don't really see that happening.

I would love Eck. 2 shortest middle infield par in the history of the game?

No. That is the stupidest fu*#ing thing I've ever heard.

News Radio 1080 KRLD in Dallas has just announced that a high level Texas Rangers source has said the deal sending Gagne to the Yankees "is a done deal." The deal will send 3-4 prospects from New York to Texas that will include Brett Gardner and Tyler Clippard.

Why is that far fetched? I mean he wouldn't costmuch, and he is a guy that can get on base. The Red Sox have thier big RBI guys, they just need people to hit in, and to have a guy like that coming off the bench would be a huge asset. It might also be a good idea to have a reserve plan for Pedoria. He has been great so far, but it is very risky to head into the playoffs with a rookie starting...just ask Rick Ankiel.

What the hell is this talk about Pedroia needing an extra backup? The kid is hitting .320 on the year, has a gold glove and already is being mentioned in ROY talk. Who are you going to move?
And another thing... Theres no reason for them to sell so quickly on Lugo like they did with Renteria. Past month he's been the player he was in tampa bay, for the first time in awhile let the sox have the same shortstop in back to back seasons

Referencing Rich Ankiel when it comes to Pedroia is just crazy talk. I can name a good bunch of rookies who have shined when it came to the playoffs

Lugo does not have playoff type hitting skills (too many strikeouts, only hits
meatball pitches, doesn't really work the count).
Obviously, Ecksteins'
proven playoff ability
(winning the World Series twice with two different teams, and winning World Series MVP) are highly enticing to the Redsox.
I wonder what they'll
give up to get him (Lugo and mucho $$$, plus a prospect; probably the more money that they send along with Lugo, the less high quality the prospect has to be).

Pedroia, Lugo, Cora (MLB), Lowrie (AAA) all guys I would start ahead of Eckstein.
Eckstein, in his third year in STL, scored at most 90runs in any year, and that is batting in front of Pujols, the best hitter in the game over that time...??
As a rule, I don't believe trade rumors from color guys on TV.

9 post season series:
.278/.333/.335
6 Extra base hits in 176 post season at bats.
David Eckstein is an overrated piece of crap.
That post season ability is freaking amazing.
"I wonder what they'll

Wow.

dmc you are deranged if you think the sox are going to send lugo, cash considerations and a prospect for David Eckstein. Lugo is the better player by and large for the next 4 years of his contract then getting yet another shortstop

Anyone ever hear if there's any truth to this rumor?
