Tim Brown's Latest: Willis, Hillenbrand

Yahoo's Tim Brown has some new material up:

  • So is Dontrelle Willis available or isn't he?  Brown says Marlins GM Larry Beinfest is privately talking about him with other clubs.  Brown rattles off the Yankees, Dodgers, Mariners, Diamondbacks, and Indians as interested parties.  Nonetheless, I think the time has passed for the Marlins to get a truly impressive bounty for their ace.
  • Shea Hillenbrand will sign with either the Padres or one other unknown NL team.  Maybe to the Nationals as Dmitri Young's replacement?
  • Yes, Bobby Kielty has been DFA'd and the Red Sox are considering him.  Typically, the 31 year-old switch-hitter is able to draw a few walks and hit lefties.  He can handle the corner outfield positions but hasn't played center with any regularity since 2002.

Marlins management once again showing the fans they care about them

Ugh to Kielty. Even from WMP, a horizontal move, unless you base it on defense. And if Kielty can't play CF, then he's basically a switch-hitting-Hinske without the ability to play the corner IF positions and with less power.

No thank you.

I'm just waiting for the WMP for Jon Rauch trade to happen. Would be perfect IMO

Haha dream on BoSox.

C'mon buehrlebro. It probably won't happen, but I think the Lopez-Kearns trade has helped a lot of people to forget that Jim Bowden belongs more with the inept GMs than with the ones who know what they're doing.

He's got a thing for toolsy outfielders anyway.

I mentioned it on the LetsGoTribe boards the other day as pure speculation, but hearing this makes me think I might have had something going:

Now, we also know that the Fish really want Franklin Gutierrez to man CF for them, and Cliff Lee seems to be in the doghouse with Cleveland. Something is going on with the Tribe as a Starter in Buffalo is about to be called up and is on Lee’s rotation schedule ~ Willis isn’t so a spot start would be needed unless the team moved everyone up to 3days rest for a week. A Lee+FrankieG+??? For Willis+??? Like deal might have been, or possibly still be, in the works.

The Fish would replace their “needs a change of scenery but will cost a bunch real soon” starter with a “needs a change of scenery but wont cost much for the next few years” type. Lee doesn’t have the upside, but his downside isn’t as bad as D-Train is showing himself to be. Adding FrankieG would also be a dream for the team. Cleveland would get a starter in return lessening the sting on 07, while possibly finding a replacement for CC if they can fix D-Train. If they can’t fix him then they continue with the idea to resign Sabathia… It would just be sort of a back-up plan for them. Keep one and let Adam Miller have the others spot when they leave makes a ton of sense to me.

The only problem is that this would leave Cleveland short a RFer as Nixon just isn’t getting it done. A deal might be contingent on the Tribe pulling off another deal for OF help (much like the Crisp/Marte trade was held up because of the Philly/Cle trade for Jason Michaels)

I think that Chad Cordero is the one to be traded, not Rauch. Cordero can net the Nats two or three players (maybe like Franklin Gutierrez, Fausto Carmona, and/or Fernando Cabrera) for next season, while Rauch can easily step into close.

The Indians could snag a guy like Reggie Sanders.

Did you really just say Chad Cordero for Gutierrez, Carmona, and Cabrera? That is such a high price.

HEY MOEBARGUY..

are you drunk? How many episodes of JAG have you seen the last week?

Carmona, Gutierrez or Cabrera for Cordero?? WTF are you smoking?

And darkstar please.. If they land Willis they will still try to sign Sabathia with an "hometown" type.. They will talk, the way you said it it seems they are just gonna let him walk..

There is absolutely no way Cleveland gives up Carmona and there is next to no chance they give up both FrankieG and BenFran. One of the two is staying in Cleveland...

Besides, the Tribe isnt going to trade a ton for BP help ~ they have been bitten way to many times there already (and I dont just mean the late 90s, the last couples years too). I doubt Cordero is on their radar at all because of what he would command.

And Moe's,
Yeah a Sanders type is exactly what I'm thinking...

Ped,

Nah, didnt mean it to come off like that ~ they will still try to sign him, they will just have a back-up plan if they cant...

Ironically, having D-Train around might actually HELP Cleveland resign CC. If they lock the two up then they just don’t pick up Byrds option next year (saves 8-9M) and figure the rest out after 2008.

Good god. With the season he's (Carmona) been having, I'm not sure Cordero would be enough to trade for a Carmona jersey, much less the other two as well.

Colletti and Beinfest have something brewing......Like Willis/Cabrera for Hendrickson/Betemit/Furcal

Remember these two teams have swung some big moves

Ripwa stole my thunder

Well, well, well. The market for relief pitchers is starting to clear up a bit.

Bet the Dodgers are feeling a little sick to see this haul for Linebrink.

Starter/starter/starter thats what the Dodgers want

i think the Brewers kinda got fleeced on that one as Linebrink is 30 and a FA after the season and they gave up 3 good young prospects and Inman was ranked their 3rd best prospect by Baseball America.

Too True Bravesrule

Flags fly forever, bravesrule.

That's why holders of the limited number of players who can influence a race are in the catbird's seat right now.
