Livan Hernandez, half-brother of Orlando, were all set to pitch together as Expos in 2003 until El Duque succumbed to a shoulder injury. Livan, a free-agent-to-be, mentioned recently that he still aims to pitch with his half-brother.
El Duque is signed through 2008 as a Met; could they make room for Livan in next year's rotation? Duque, Oliver Perez, and John Maine are locked in. Tom Glavine's status is in question; Livan could conceivably fill Glavine's rotation spot. If Glavine reaches 200 innings this year, he'll have a $13MM player option for '08. It might be hard to turn that down.
The market is weak enough where a past-his-prime innings eater like Livan Hernandez might be a hot commodity. If he's looking for a 3/36 type deal, the Mets would probably pass.

Livan isn't bad but I wouldn't shell out more than a one or very-cheap 2 year deal for him.
He looks like crap for a game, mediocre for a game and then pretty good for a game (a solid #4).

"Livan isn't bad but I wouldn't shell out more than a one or very-cheap 2 year deal for him. "
Truee. I would give him the same kind of deal hat El Duque got last year. 1 yar deal for around 7 mil with some incentives, an option for next yer and a buyout. Pedro comes back this week and how he looks will play a big part in what we look to do in the rotation next year.
"If Glavine reaches 200 innings this year, he'll have a $13MM player option for '08. It might be hard to turn that down."
Tim, I agree. If Glavine wants to pitch for the Mets next year then they will have a spot for him in the rotation. Atleast I like to think so. I am pretty sure that this is going to be his final hurrah though.
Another thing that will have an impact on this situation is whether the Mts believe Pelfrey or Humber will pitch in the bigs next year.

I think the only way the Mets even consider Livan is if they have neither Pedro or Glavine going into next season.
I believe Glavine when he says he's going to retire, and Pedro's status will depend on how things go in the next two months.
If the Mets have one of those guys to go with Duque, Perez, and Maine though, I think the last spot is a battle in the spring between Pelfrey, Humber, and maybe Mulvey as the longshot. You know they want some spring competition for the rotation.
If it turns out Pedro can't really pitch anymore though, and Glavine decides to retire, Livan might not be a horrible idea. They still won't technically have a legit ace, but you have to assume Maine won't hit the same wall he did this August, and Ollie will always have the stuff to become an ace, if he ever really put it all together. He's come a long way, but I believe he can come further.

Mark my words, Tom Glavine will be a Brave next year!
Posted by: Chipper | August 31, 2007 at 10:00 PM
Livan has definitely looked good in his last 2 starts.
The one thing he has going for him is that he's a FA and won't cost a team anything but $$.
Combine that with him being an "inning eater" and likely willing to take a 1 to 2 year contract and he's a better risk than a lot of what you could fall into this offseason.

"Mark my words, Tom Glavine will be a Brave next year!"
LOL I don't believe so. Either Glavine retires, or pitches another season with the Mets.
MARK my works, the Braves had their chance. If Glavine makes 200 IP, there's no way the Braves even try to compete with $13 million.
If he doesn't, I'm pretty sure the Mets still have something like a $11 million club option, which they will definetly activate if he doesn't retire.
This is where the "class" Omar showed Glavine by being patient last offseason comes in. Glavine will show the same class and be straight with the Mets about his intentions. If he's going to retire, he won't demand the Mets activate his option by threatening to go to the Braves if they don't. If he wants to pitch again, he'll give them ample time to decide on the club option, which they'll definetly activate. unless they land a name like Johan Santana. For the Mets, keeping a guy like Glavine away from Atlanta is worth that money. Esp if they make a nice run again this year.

Glavine has a player option. Is there a club option Tim didn't mention? He will retire as a Brave, he wants to pitch with John again, and he has his family down here, though I don't know why he turned us down last year.

Meddler i dont know why you consider chippers idea laughable. Last year i think he really wanted to play the braves but they just wouldnt offer him the same money as the mets.
Posted by: themfightnwords | September 01, 2007 at 09:07 AM
If he wanted to pitch for the Braves soooo bad, it wouldn't have been about the money. Do you really think the Glavines are hurting for cash? I don't think so.
In the end, he wanted to play for the Mets more than the Braves, so he did.

Thank you themfightnwords. JerseyMetFan, with all the money he has now, don't you think he'd rather be with friends and family?
Qoute: "I'm sorry I did this, I wanted to remain a Brave, but not for that money." --- Tom Glavine in '02.
The Braves will have more cash to spend, since Wic is gone, and Liberty will increase our payroll by about $10M-$15M.

Yeah he said that... 5 years ago. I'm talking about this past offseason.
You even agree that he has a ton of money. He's a guaranteed first ballot HOFer. This wasn't about the money.
Personally, I think he stayed with the Mets because he wants a ring. Obviously things are a lot closer than anyone thought they would be, but he still has his best shot with the Mets. I don't really mind if he leaves at the end of the year. Pelfrey is a capable 5th starter, and Humber has had a great year in AAA. We won't miss him that much.
Posted by: JerseyMetFan | September 01, 2007 at 10:20 PM
No, JerseyMetFan, that is not why he chose the Mets. He loves the Braves, and would still like to pitch there. The Braves had no money to spend last offseason, and they didn't make him an offer. Here is a quote from Tim:
"I'm not sure Glavine even has two options, as no one is reporting that the Braves have made him an offer. Perhaps Schuerholz is waiting on a deal of Tim Hudson or Marcus Giles to free up payroll before doing so."
Posted by: ZachAttack | September 02, 2007 at 12:03 AM
Well, I would like to ave Tommy and his veteran presence around, but if he really wants to go play in ATL and they spend a good portion of their offseason money to bring in Glavine, I wouldnt be heartbroken, at all. Pelfreys slider was sick tonight, what was up with that lol?
