Luis Castillo had wanted to play for the Mets for some time before they brought him aboard in a summer trade. By most accounts he fulfilled his obligations: he got on base, played sound defense, and did those #2 hitter things that always draw praise. John Delcos of The Journal News quotes Castillo as saying he wants to come back in 2008.
Presumably the deal would be for something like two years, $10MM. It would add a little stability to second base for the Mets. Delcos says the only other free agent 2B who might rival Castillo is Kaz Matsui, and the Mets won't be trying that again. I also think Tadahito Iguchi would be comparable to Castillo in many ways. In-house, Ruben Gotay would be the choice.
Don't forget the trade market though. Orlando Hudson, Freddy Sanchez, Mark Ellis, Jose Lopez, Ray Durham, and Mark Grudzielanek might be available this winter.

I dont know, I like the guy, but he is just so broken down it is almost sad to watch. This guy knows how o play the game the right way as well as anybody in the game right now. Amazing bunter, good defense, good plate vision and patience, nice speed, great station to station guy. The thing is, his knees are shot. I also heard that he got Reyes into a bad habit of staying out late on the road partying. I dont know if this has anything to do with Reyes' second half dropoff, but it could. I would not object to bringing him back, but I would be okay with going in another direction too.

I'd love to have the Mets get a shot at Hudson. Hopefully the D-backs don't ask for the moon.

I'd LOVE to see where you read something that makes you think Mark Ellis is available...He's cheap and he only set (or tied) the all-time FLD% record for a 2B in a season with at least 100 games played in '06.

Yup, thats the perfect fit. Number 2 hitter, speedy, great fielder.
Another guy I would like for Omar to look into is Josh Barfield. It seems like he can be had, since his job has been given to Asdrubal Cabrera, and it could be his for the future. I still think Barfield has 20/20 potential.
