Mike Cameron Suspended For Stimulant

Mike Cameron recently appeared on XX Sports Radio in San Diego today and stated that he will receive a 25-game suspension for a banned substance, but not a steroid.  That implies a stimulant, for which the penalty is 25 games for a second positive test (example: Neifi Perez).  Actually Neifi tested positive a third time and snagged an 80 game ban.  Here's the press release for Cameron.

This should knock his price down a bit, knowing that Cameron can only play 137 games next season.  The Braves are considered a strong contender for him.

Maybe the Braves already heard of this and that's why they are letting Lillibridge do some work in centerfield so that he can be a stop-gap until Cameron is signed...????

Err....came of the suspension I mean.

Would only 137 games of Mike Cameron really be a bad thing, seeing as how injury-prone he's been?

Tough day for Cameron after being classified as a Type B FA while former teammates Michael Barrett & Milton Bradley classified as Type A. However, if you see the glass as half full, it makes him more attractive to sign, only having to lose 1 pick.

Most teams will give a second though to signing Barrett, having to give up 2 picks for that hack.

Is there a chance Barrett doesn't get signed? Two picks is an awful lot for the guy.

A big problem with cameron being in only 137 games is the ammount of time it takes for him to warm up to the season. It takes him usually 50 games before he starts playing well (for him) offensively. This could really hurt his stats next season. No wonder we never offered him an extension, have fun in atlanta!

sure, if the team has a protected pick, even more so if they are signing multiple class A free agents, it might end up being just a 3rd round pick in the end.

that was answer to people wondering about whether Barrett worth 2 picks.

And why do people say it costs two picks? maybe I'm remembering this wrong but the team that loses the player gets two picks. One of them being the highest pick the signing team has available (varies) and the sandwich pick is a reimbursement given by the league and not the signing team.

i never wanted him to come to ATL in the first place and now i def dont want to seeing that this is obviously a recurring thing for him. all we need is someone to come in hit around 270 play solid defense bat towards bottom of the order and be decent. sure there is a guy out there that can do that for much cheaper than cameron

Willie Harris can probably bat .270 and play defense at bottom of order if that was the case....

theduce: amen. We could get that kind of production out of plenty of people who aren't Mike Cameron and who won't block our prospects from seeing play time.

I doubt that the Pads will offer Barrett arbitration anyway. He might just take them up on it. If they don't offer arbitration, then the signing team wouldn't give up picks.

Why would the Braves even consider Cameron? Decent power numbers, but his AVG and OBP are dreadful. And we would have him hit leadoff?!?

I'd offer Barrett arbitration because I think he wants to be a starter and its worth the chance. As to Cameron, I think this seals that he won't be in SAn Diego next year but I have no idea what to do to replace him

Kevin Towers has threatened to replace him with Jason Lane but that simply cannot happen if we want to stay competitive in baseball's hottest division.

Kosuke Fukodome
Aaron Rowand
Coco Crisp

These are the top options in my mind but Corey Patterson is an interesting option as well. Maybe Kenny Lofton can add another team to his list?

Bottom line, there are plenty of CF options on the market for the Padres. If Andruw Jones wanted a heavy 1yr deal, the Padres have been mentioned as someone who'd offer it.

Why is Cameron being a class B free agent tough news for him? That's better for him because teams would be more likely to sign and pay more for him.

Every A free agent WISHES he was a B.

Call me crazy, but this makes me want Cameron MORE! His price just went down and greenies are not a big deal for performance. Yes, you have to find a replacement for the first 25 games, but this also keeps Cameron fresher as well.

Give me Cameron for 5-7 million/season over Torii for 15-16 or Rowand for 12 any day of the week. He'd be my top CF priority given his likely price.
