Cashman Tells Cano The Score, Playfully

Robinson Cano said publicly a few days ago that he did not want to play third base.  As I noted at the time, it's not really up to him.  If he wants to get paid, he'll play where the Yankees want him to.  Another thought is that taking Cano out of the 3B mix could hurt the Yankees' negotiating position slightly.  Brian Cashman would rather have teams and agents think he's fully willing to move Cano to third or use Wilson Betemit.    It does ring a bit hollow, kind of like when Cashman was saying they'd use Bubba Crosby as the team's center fielder a few years back.

Anyway, Cashman "playfully" informed Cano today that third base was indeed an option for him.  He made a point to appear lighthearted here, perhaps to avoid public conflict if he does move Cano.  I actually like the idea if the Yanks can make a reasonable deal for Orlando Hudson

What is a reasonable deal for Hudson? I assume it has something to do with SP since that is the one thing that AZ lacks.

What is a reasonable contract for Hudson after the season? Is he a 3-4yr, 6-8M/yr player or is it more?

I'm sorry this has nothing to do with the yankees and Cano; but i was wondering Tim if you could find something about the Tampa Bay Devil Rays There has been no mention in like a month.

Maybe another Whitesox post in there too. there has been so much Yankee, Shilling, and A-Rod posts lately.

yeah, as a Royals fan, I am getting a serious ESPN vibe here lately.

I avoid ESPN over how much they pound Red Sox, Yankees, Mets and Cubs drivel at you. Just because a small market team has a small market, doesn't mean a market isn't still there.

Elijah Dukes updates? Pittsburgh's manager updates? I love the site, but would like to see a lot more on us small market boys.

I love Cano and any team that has an opening at second base should talk to the Yankees if they're considering trading him. This guy's ceiling is sky high, and if anyone can put up 30-35 hr, .330 ba at second base its him. Then again if im the Yankees he doesnt leave New York unless its for a stud like Johan or Miggy,

This is so damn complicated. I've said it before, I'll say it again. I think I'll be saying it a lot this offseason. This is a battle The Yankees lost and they have to deal with it. They cannot outcompete Boston on their current pace without A-Rod's production.

Yes, more small market stuff would be nice. Take a breather from all the World Series-Free Agent Period purgatory. Any more Needs & Luxuries on the way?

I love the line in the old Bubba Crosby post: "The yankees dont have the ammo to aquire Juan Pierre or even Joey Gathwright" My how things change over the course of a few years.

The free agent profile things you did last year were always interesting too. I'd be really interested to see what you have to say about injured pitchers like Colon, Garcia or Clement.

We want O-Dog back in Jays town. An article a few weeks back said he'd still love to play here.

Guys, there just isn't much going on as far as rumors for small market teams now that don't involve the twins. Sure it would be great to see more posts about the royals, but what is tim going to write about? You have to admit, Arod, Mo, and Posada are much bigger stories than david riske or al reyes. When the signing period starts on the 13th, I'm sure you'll start to see something.

I know that it would be creating a whole different problem if the Yankees did this...but why not move Jeter to third. I will probably get yelled at for saying this, but lets face it, Jeter never really had much range at shortstop. His best weapon is his arm, which could be used at third. Any shortstop they could pull out would have better range than Jeter, and that would help out pitchers like Wang who live off the ground ball. Who the Yankees could get for a shortstop is a tough question, but unless they could get Miguel Cabrera (for whom they would have to trade away a lot of pitching), it might be easier to get a shortstop. Maybe the Dodgers would be willing to give up Furcal and let Hu take a shot at a starting role (I know, fantasy and unlikely). I know that it is probably out of the question, but I think the Yankees would really do well with some outside the box thinking at this point.

Well, if the yankees would want to try cano at third base, and if brent lillibridge seems to be an idea or short or second, i would not mind a kelly johnson for melky cabrera trade. I do not think it would happen, but it would a nice trade for the braves, and the yankees

lol, got sidetracked at work, what i meant to say was that the yankees would then have a nice young second baseman with whom they could pair with cano for a heck of a future combo, again, do not see this idea happening but it would be nice to consider

Jeter to 3B really does make the most sense but I think (hope?) the Yanks have reached their quota of pissing off legends for this offseason.

I really don't understand why Betemit isn't considered a solid option. If he were still a Dodger, odds are he'd be mentioned along with Crede et all in the trade talks. Green being greener and all that I guess.

I agree. Betemit can become a solid option at third, and is definitely better than anything it would take to get Cabrera. New York being New York, we always want to find the superstar for each position, but thats not going to happen. I heard Keith Law recommend Scott Rolen, but he acknowledged that that was a huge risk. If Im the Yankees, I go with the platoon at third, and stay far, far away from Joe Crede.

Haha, forgive me, but I thought Yankees and their fans didn't accept non-superstars. I agree Betemit would be fine at third, he was great for the Braves whenever Chipper was injured and he has a great power stroke. That said, the Steinbrenners might not agree, and everybody knows that their opinions are the only ones that matter.

Haha, don't you have a playoff game to be apathetic about?

(See, stereotyping all fans with the worst of the fanbase is fun!)

Hey, no offense was intended, I was simply commenting on the signing record of the Yankees over the past decade. No need to get defensive, or in your case offensive. After all, you wouldn't want to further perpetuate the "worst stereotype" of your own fan-base now would you? I would not like to get into some blogosphere battle here, so lets please try to keep it civil.

Moving Jeter is idiotic and drastic.

Cano is a really good second baseman and he is only 24. No reason to move him at this point unless you can get someone who is a vacuum at 2b.

Andy, the Yanks have made plenty of moves in the past year alone where the "small names" were coming in (Sheff trade, RJ trade, Mientkiewicz signing, Phelps Rule 5, Britton trade). I just feel the need to respond to half-truths. They make me sad.

Vinny: Jeter to 3B makes more sense than most of us want to admit. He's lost a step he couldn't afford to lose as indicated by his defensive numbers in 2007. He's quickly approaching the point where a solid portion of what he does on offense gets erased by his poor defense. Believe me, I hate saying that, but he's about at the Ripken point.

How about CF?

CF used to be the talk but I think the time has passed, atleast in the organization's eyes. I'm not sure there's a true comp for Jeter as far as that would go; Biggio switched at 37 and Yount at 29 but both were much smaller than Jeter (6'3 versus 5'11 and 6'0 respectively). 3B would also probably be a bit easier for a guy of his "stature" to handle; a disasterous move to CF would just be awkward. Shawon Dunston would have been a bit closer but he never really played a full season in the OF.
