« Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori | Main | Collusion Against A-Rod? »
Closer Hitoki Iwase has received two offers (link in Japanese) from his team the Chunichi Dragons. One is a one-year, $4MM offer. The other is a four-year, $16MM offer - which would be the biggest contract in franchise history.
Iwase told the press that he was "very impressed with the offer, and definitely thinking about remaining a Dragon." In that case he would not file for free agency. Right now, the vibe is that he will stay in Japan. The Royals, Cubs, and Rockies are among the MLB teams interested in his services.
Thanks to Tak Iwanaga for translating.

After seeing Okajima succeed on the big stage last season, I don't see how a Japanese closer wouldn't want to come to the MLB.

That would be a disappointment. I was hoping to see him pitch in a red sox uniform. Okajima and Iwase sound much better than Okajima and Lopez.

It's about time for an International Draft.

Yes, lets just pluck the best players out of Japan without their say in the matter.
They bombed pearl harbor. They owe us. :)

Foreign players should be made to conform to the same rules that govern players in the US. If foreign players wish to play baseball here they should enter the draft just as any high school or college player would. An International Draft during the off season would be a good idea. It would force the free agent market open andinclude more talent.
