UPDATE, AFTERNOON OF 11-14-07: Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog suggests that the Mets are offering Torrealba a three-year, $15MM deal. Yikes. He's barely more than a backup to me.
UPDATE, MORNING OF 11-14-07: Ken Rosenthal agrees, it looks like a Torrealba/Castro tandem for the Mets. Interestingly they're expected to split playing time about evenly. Creative!
FROM 11-13-07:
The Associated Press is reporting that the Mets are close to re-signing catcher Ramon Castro. I'd figured Castro would ask for starter money, but maybe not.
The Mets also plan on making an offer to free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba, according to ESPN Radio (hat tip to MetsBlog). Torrealba currently has a two-year, $6MM offer on the table from the Rockies. If he's a man of his word, he'll give the Rox a chance to match the Mets' offer.
Torrealba and Castro could combine to really shut down the running game, though both had off years in that department in '07. Torrealba's problem can be attributed to a lingering strained shoulder. Castro's, I have no idea.

Sweet!
I, as many Mets fans do, love Castro. Plays with heart and might be the best back up catcher in the game.

Well, this post is the only good thing I have read about Torrealba. Mets fans are up in arms about a possible Yorvit signing. The whole "latin player" thing is poping up again. Its sort of weird to see a fan base that I identify with be so openly racist. It makes me question my choice of allegiance, because I share a passion with a bunch of racists.
Red, green, purple, blue, as long as they play good ball. I think Omar thinks Yorvit can play good ball. I think he is just making a baseball decision, not hiring because of race. That said, Torrelba is the wrong baseball choice. Fans should be more upset at the fact that Omar is bringing in the wrong guy, rather then, he is letting go another white guy.

I hope Omar knows he's bringing in a catcher who hit .212 on the road this year.

Castro hasn't proven he can hold up well enough to be a starter. He's missed time in each of the last two years with back problems and that's under the strain of part time duty. His weight is also a concern, but his numbers were definitely great last year.
If Omar goes with Torrealba there are three reasons:
1. He wants to get younger at the position.
2. LoDuca's late season "depression" really soured the Mets front office on him.
3. They couldn't work out a deal for Ramon Hernandez while also trying to bring up disucssions about Erik Bedard and maybe Brian Roberts and even Chad Bradford.

Our offense is sick. Met's fans don't need Torrealba to come in and be ted Williams.
Control the running game, call a good game, be cheap and scrape together a .350 OBP.
LOVE CASTRO!!

How did that rape case involving Castro in Pittsburgh ever turn out?

"How did that rape case involving Castro in Pittsburgh ever turn out?"
rape schmape....who cares? the bitch probably deserved it. ; )

Good grief. I guess Minaya has gone insane.
So he's taking a catcher who can't throw anyone out who will hit about .230 with a .280 OBP, giving him a 3 year deal, having him split time with a clearly superior player, and paying him more than backups should get.
Wow. $52M for Posada is starting to look pretty good.
Posted by: bobo | November 14, 2007 at 12:34 PM
Minaya has publically stated that he feels more comfortable with latino players since he's latino. How can you get any more racist than that?
Please don't make me defend Mets fans again, it pains me to do so as an Atlantan.
Posted by: Land-Man | November 14, 2007 at 12:37 PM
Are the Mets racist? Nope. Are Mets fans racist? No more or less than any other group of people anywhere in the USA. Sometimes fans just get frustrated because in NY especially if a white GM traded Beltran for Ellsbury and Papelbon, traded Reyes for Haren/crosby and Blanton, traded Delgado for Markakis and Millar - no matter how lopsided those trades are in NY favor - there would a storm of criticism about dumping latinos for whites. You have to remember if a bakery in Howard Beach sells black and white cookies that are 51% white Rev Al will be there trying to shut it down with protests and rallies.
And for the record - I hate defending any NY fan since I am one of those that lives in NY and hates all the teams here lol.

If the Rockies were only offering 2/$6, Omar would be an absolute FOOL to offer 3/$15. We aren't talking about a stud FA here.... it's Yorvit freakin Torrealba. Castro is way better, and should be paid as such. Offer him 3/8, and if he passes, big freakin deal. He won't be missed.
Posted by: JerseyMetFan | November 14, 2007 at 02:58 PM
Whatever, who else is there to sign. Torrealba is younger and cheaper with more upside then Lo Duca. All Castro has done in his career is prove that he cannot handle the stress of being an everyday catcher. He wears down if he plays 3 in a row. He is a great backup though. Lo Duca has no upside. Like people said, all that matters if that we get some solid defense and a guy that can handle the pitching staff. It also gives the pitchers sort of a choice of their preferred catcher. With Lo Duca, he was in there everyday no matter what. With these 2 splitting time, thew rotation can pick who they feel comfortable with. I like it. Id rather have Torrealba for 3/15 then Posada for 4/60, or whatever the Mets would have spent to sign him. This is not a big deal to me. This guy is going to bat 8th.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 14, 2007 at 03:05 PM
3/15 for your #8 hitter doesn't sound like a good deal to me. But then again, I'm starting to wonder if there are any good catchers left in the majors anymore. It seems they either hit well or catch well, but rarely both.

When it's official, it will be one of the worst signings in Mets history.
Posted by: moebarguy | November 14, 2007 at 03:27 PM
Hahahahaha. Yorvit Torrealba, meet
Scott Schoeneweis - you guys have got some things in common, maybe you'll get along!
Posted by: bobo | November 14, 2007 at 03:34 PM
FYI:
Mets.com says the Offer is 2 years, 10 million. Not 3 years, 15 million. And I'd say that's a little more credible then Cerrone.

worst signing after mo vaughn of course ...sorryhad to bring him back up
Posted by: jerseyballer | November 14, 2007 at 03:41 PM
To be fair, Torrealba was a brick wall behind the plate during the postseason from what I saw. NOTHING gets by the guy. His hitting leaves something to be desired, though.

Update
Mets sign Torrealba at 2 years/10 million
Posted by: Arian | November 14, 2007 at 04:24 PM
Why would the Mets lock up either guy for more than 1 year when they know that better C's like Kenji Johjima, A.J. Pierzynski, Jason Varitek, and Johnny Estrada will all be available as FA's after the season?
Posted by: rangerchick | November 14, 2007 at 04:44 PM
@Arian
Source, or shut up.
Posted by: JerseyMetFan | November 14, 2007 at 04:55 PM
Thats the verdict, and there will be an announcement later this week
What a poor option for the Mets...

You obviously heard something somewhere, so post a link, or stop pretending to know info that isn't true.

How about the idea that Torrealba comes from the same native country as a certain best pitcher in all of baseball? Its a bit of a stretch, but Santana's expressed interest in the Mets. Maybe Omar for whatever reason feels Torrealba could put them over the top in the Santana sweeps.

"When it's official, it will be one of the worst signings in Mets history"
Thats a pretty stupid thing to say. A low risk 3 year deal for chump change is suddenly the worst contract in mets history? Sounds a tad ridiculous. Especially when like 4 years ago we brought in Mo Vaughn and Jeremy Burnitz in the same offseason.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 14, 2007 at 07:41 PM
You guys are making this outto be some make or break deal that is going to hamstring the franchise for years.... when in all reality the team across NY in the Bronx just commited like 50 mil to a 37 year old catcher....hmmmmm. This is like the Yankees signing Mientkeiwicz last year. They needed a 1B, so they got one with a pretty good glove and no bat. Who cares. You would think from these reactions the Mets just signed Juan Pierre to a 8/150 deal.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 14, 2007 at 07:44 PM
Its not like they left Joe Mauer out on the market and went all out for Torrelba instead. Torrealba, Lo Duca, Brad Ausmus. Those were pretty much their choices. And Scott Shcoeneweis was the Mets best reliever down the stretch.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 14, 2007 at 07:46 PM
You know your not a good club when scott schoenweis is your best reliever down the stretch.
Posted by: Bravesfanuc | November 14, 2007 at 08:31 PM
@ Bravesfanuc
Your/You're
It's funny to think we're not a good club, when we were CLEARLY better than the Braves last season (and still are). If Scott was our best, and we were better than you, then what does that say about your team?
Posted by: JerseyMetFan | November 14, 2007 at 08:52 PM
It also kind of shows what kind of fan a person is when they continually say things like "hahha the stupid mutts suck" and dont actually contribute any of their own thoughts or ideas on baseball into the post. Its okay though it obviously is a very fulfilling thing you've got going.
