« Matt Garza Traded For Delmon Young In Blockbuster | Main | Padres Rumors: Cameron, Jenkins, Colon »
UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 10pm: Olney is still certain Percival is going to the Rays on a multiyear deal. One other note is that the Giants had been in on him.
UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 7:40pm: Not so fast, says Ken Rosenthal. The Rays may be in the lead on Percival because he is close to Joe Maddon and they'll offer two years. But the Yankees are in the mix offering a setup role and the Brewers are offering a one-year deal and a closer job.
FROM 11-28-07 at 3:40pm:
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Rays are "moving toward a deal" to sign free agent reliever Troy Percival. This could give them a potentially solid veteran relief group in Juan Rincon, Dan Wheeler, Percival, and Al Reyes.
Percival was known to have been seeking a multiyear deal (I'm guessing two years, $10MM or so). Other suitors: Yankees, Brewers, Giants, and Astros.

Great move by the Rays. They are going to look very good in very little time.

The New Scary Rays? Niemman, Price, Kazmir, Shields, Garza, and McGee on the pitching side.
Plus Crawford, Pena, Upton, Longoria, and Dukes on the offense side.
Plus they added Rincon to their bullpen to go along with Dan Wheeler. If they can get a little more talent in that bullpen they are going to be scary good

Along with the potential Garza - Young swap, the Rays are really making a push to get better. Unfortunately, they're in the same division as the Yankees and the Red Sox, so nothing they do - ever - will matter much in reality.

Jesus...are the Rays actually considering competing this year? At this rate, they very well could...
Posted by: achilles17 | November 28, 2007 at 03:45 PM
Poor BrewCrew, they are losing all of their bullpen targets.

When did the Rays get Juan Richon?
Posted by: WHITESOX | November 28, 2007 at 03:47 PM
Rays would be soo much to go right to compete regardless. Even to finish 3rd, they would need serious luck, and the Jays would have to face serious injury problems like last year.
Fact is, they're still going to finish 4th, but at least be near or better than a .500 team.
Orioles will stink so badly, it's going to be hilarious

The Rays were going to be awesome in a couple years anyway with Kazmir, Niemann, Price, Shields, McGee, Dukes, Upton, Crawford, Longoria, Brignac, Jennings, Young, Jaso, and Iwamura. Now they lost one piece (Young) and added a not-as-good (but more needed) piece in Garza.

And they had Pridie and Baldelli.

Note to readers - I'm trying to track down and block the in-post ad for free laptops that flashes. Did my best to block that type but it slipped in somehow. Sorry about that and thanks for your patience.

What is not so good about a 3.69 era? And Young only had a .316 obp last year.

GAH!
Ed Wade needs to sign Gagne or Dotel. A reliever with some actual upside!

...Shoot, the Yanks currently have 3 rookies penciled into the rotation and the same old ageing Vets spread around the field. The Rays may think they do have a good shoot at over taking them in 2008, and whos to say they would be wrong for thinking it until NY makes another move or two…

Anything able to be done about the logging you out after every post?
Did want to say on the adds though, everyone see the sumo/"Touch my belly" one? I first say it on a "Miguel Cabrera" thread ~ as the page loaded I couldnt help but laugh, thinking maybe Tim gave us a little cartoon of the big guy...

The crappy commenting system is a January initiative.
That's funny about the sumo guy. By the way if anyone ever sees a very annoying ad please send me a screenshot of it and I will get rid of it if I agree.

Do the cardinals get a pick in the supplemental round now that Percival signed?
Posted by: registereduser | November 28, 2007 at 04:43 PM
I thought Percival wanted to close.
Posted by: WHIPit | November 28, 2007 at 04:44 PM
They need a veteran for that rotation. Not an ace, just someone with experience who can help the youngsters... preferably someone who has won before. Schilling would have been perfect, but maybe Moyer or Kenny Rogers would do.

Decent signing by the Rays. However, let's not forget that this guys arm did fall off a few times. He is old and doesn't come with a clean medical history.
As an Angels fan I love what Percival did for us. Just would be afraid of commiting $5m/year to him - especially on the Rays budget.

Let's all root for the Rays to finish with 70 wins for the first time in franchise history. Maybe getting rid of the unis will shed the bad fortune. New ballpark in 2012 could be sweet.
Posted by: JD | November 28, 2007 at 06:55 PM
they had 70 wins in 2004 ;)
they should surpass that this year. Lots of young guys getting better. Lots of old players on other teams getting a bit worse.
75-80 wins would not surprise me in the least.

Percival is a type B, so the Cardinals get a pick if he signs before the arbitration deadline I believe.

It let me post! There's no method to TypeKey's madness apparently.

I think Percival would be good for any team. Of course he will never be as good as he once was as an Angel. He was rock solid closer or reliver to count on in the playoffs or in big games.
Posted by: angels fan | November 28, 2007 at 07:57 PM
I wanted the sox to go after him as a 7th inning guy/setup man to go with okajima , but if the yankees want to make him their primary set up man for the next 2-3 yrs than go for it , I doubt he can handle the workload that the yankees pen always gets , especially with all the rooks in the rotation this yr.
Also , id bet that the rays will be battling for 3rd with the jays this yr in the Al east , if even 1/2 of their young hitters can take the typical steps that solid young guys usually do than they will certainly suprise some people , but unfortunately theres only one wild card per league , so 3rd place teams still cant get in...on a side note , i still think they should try to deal carlos pena for basically a younger version ( ie 40 hr potential) so some other team can take a big risk when it comes time to sign him for 4+ yrs

He would be a great signing for the Yankees. They have the payroll flexibility as well as resources to bring in another arm if Percival gets hurt.
I just worry about a team like the Brewers who would have to count on him being effective and healthy. He's a big risk.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 28, 2007 at 09:24 PM
Am I the only one who thinks that Percival will not hold up health-wise? Someone is going to get burned big time on a deal with this guy.
You would think that the Yankees would have learned their lesson with their recent Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright fiascos. It's amazing how good some of these guys look....until they have to take the mound!
