UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 10:05pm: Still no clarity on the Kuroda situation. MLB.com's Ken Gurnick notes Japanese reports indicating Kuroda has signed with the Dodgers, but Ned Colletti is still awaiting word from his agent. Here's Tony Jackson's update; he says pretty much the same.
UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 1:40pm: Jerry Crasnick checks in, noting that Kuroda is visiting his California-based agent. They'll go over the four offers they have in hand.
UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 8:56am: If the Diamondbacks are out of the running for Kuroda, they haven't been informed of it. Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News wrote early today that Kuroda was on a flight to L.A. - either indicating he is doing his recruiting tour or he signed with the Dodgers. Jackson believes the latter is the case.
UPDATE, 12-12-07 at 8:21am: The Kyodo News, found via RotoWorld, reports that Kuroda has chosen the Dodgers and he informed his former team on Tuesday night. The signing could be announced today.
UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 11:18pm: Geoff Baker tells us all to calm down. Kuroda hasn't made his decision yet, though the Dodgers and Mariners remain the frontrunners. Baker believes it might take several days to reach a conclusion.
UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 9:17pm: Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News has some info. He says that Kuroda is strongly leaning towards the Dodgers and the decision is due soon. Jackson verifies that Kuroda has cancelled his U.S. trip and will choose between the Dodgers and Mariners. The presence of Takashi Saito may be a big point in the Dodgers' favor. But this deal is not done yet.
FROM 12-11-07 at 8:10pm:
Just got a good tip that Hiroki Kuroda has chosen the Dodgers. At least, that's the word out of Japan - Ned Colletti and Co. aren't fessing up to anything yet. It definitely seems that the D'Backs are out of the mix. Kuroda apparently cancelled his U.S. tour and will make his decision from home. He may choose the Dodgers over the Ms despite L.A. offering a bit less.

Darn... that reduces the chances of a Santana-to-Dodgers deal from slim to none.
Posted by: MikeTwins | December 11, 2007 at 08:12 PM
Does that mean that the Dodgers would be out on Erik Bedard? Because that just seems like an odd decision then for L.A. They still need an ace, Penny is really just a good #2. They're in a division stocked with other good teams, and have the surplusses of young talent needed. I mean the only guys on that team that really felt like they were untradable were Billingsley and Kershaw. Couldn't LA get that done for Kemp, Meloan, Elbert and Hu? Or would they prefer a Cincy offer of something like Bailey, Votto, Encarnacion/Hamilton?
Posted by: scribbletone | December 11, 2007 at 08:19 PM
Hmmm... how's that Sanatana for Reyes for Haren trade going or is that pretty much dead?
Posted by: TrueCubsFan | December 11, 2007 at 08:19 PM
Oh Penny is a Number 1 until the All-Star break. Then he becomes a No. 4 or 5. It's like clockwork.
Posted by: TrueCubsFan | December 11, 2007 at 08:22 PM
Penny had a 3.84 ERA in the second half last year.
thats not a back of the rotation starter.
Posted by: npurcell | December 11, 2007 at 08:26 PM
(crawls from secret corner) #5 in VORP for all of starting pitchers sure sounds like an ace to me.
Kemp is as 'untradeable' as Bills and Kershaw--despite what the los angeles times tries to indicate, those three, loney (who has essentially had his 'prospect' tag removed) and to a lesser extent, la roche, are all fairly unmovable unless a big-ticket MLB-ready player game in the deal.
now if tim would just learn to stop breaking news so quick, maybe i could still contribute to the site ;-) keep up the great work, tim, excited to hear more on this

any official link?

The Dodgers don't need an ace, they have two developing Ace's in Chad Billingsley and Clayton Kershaw. They need depth in the rotation, which now has a 1-4 of Penny, Billingsley, Lowe, Kuroda and the possibility of Jason Schmidt rebounding.
Posted by: Speedy | December 11, 2007 at 08:32 PM
Penny got VERY lucky with his ERA. 1.46 WHIP, .281 BAA, dramatic drop in BB/K ratio, like I said, very very lucky.
It's weird though, his first couple of years he was better in the second half.
Posted by: TrueCubsFan | December 11, 2007 at 08:32 PM
Everyone keeps dreaming up ridiculous trades the Dodgers will do that will never happen. Hopefully some of that will be put to rest now.
Posted by: J.L. | December 11, 2007 at 08:35 PM
Freakin Nice!I love it a lot, were not going to trade any of of our guys like Either or La Roche! We could have a nice starting rotation with Penny/Lowe/Blillisley/Kuroda/Schimdt then guys who could come in like Loiza/Stults/Kuo/Houlton
really nice I hope this is true.
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | December 11, 2007 at 08:38 PM
Yea I agree, it seems now that the biggest names on the trade market are all pitchers, and with this signing this removes the dodgers need to trade away their future to make a big splash. If i were the dodgers, I still would attempt to get Tejada or Rolen, but definitely not if it costs one of the players considered "untouchable."
I will throw another name into the mix though for the dodgers, with the middle of their order mainly right handed (Kemp, Jones, Kent), they could use a left handed bat, maybe eric chavez could be a guy to go get. He basically is a left handed rolen, same type of contract, plays great d, big health risk, rolen may be more productive, but chavez could be an idea, and beane might be willing to take on prospects who are not that highly touted, or he might want laroche in return. It would seem to be a good trade for the dodgers if chavez could stay healthy, but of course the unlikely hood of that is probably why his name has not been mentioned yet.

Says Dodgers haven't been informed yet...if its true.
Posted by: npurcell | December 11, 2007 at 08:49 PM
um...loney and ethier = left handed bats...
Posted by: J.L. | December 11, 2007 at 08:51 PM
ummm... either is more than likely the fouth outfielder, so he will not be playing on a full-time basis, and one left-handed bat compared to three means that another lefthanded bat could be added to provide good balance, especially a run producing bat that plays third, which is what chavez can do at least decently when healthy, I also said that their middle of the order is mainly right handed, i know that loney is lefthanded
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 11, 2007 at 09:07 PM
Updated the post with some info...this is not 100% right now.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2007 at 09:12 PM
No thanks on Eric Chavez. He's on the downside of his career, we have the righthanded version of Chavez in Andy LaRoche.
Posted by: Speedy | December 11, 2007 at 09:13 PM
Btw, that brings up a good point, what do the dodgers have against Laroche being their third baseman?
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 11, 2007 at 09:14 PM
bravesbeast- nothing is certain but im saying that they have lefthanded bats and they are both very good hitters who have middle of the order potential. loney would prob hit somewhere in between those three right handers. ethier will be traded before he's a fourth outfielder. heck he'll prob request a trade if that happens.
As for LaRoche, he will have the chance to win the 3rd base in job in spring (again).

I think the Dodgers would have a hell of a team if they got Bedard, and they definitely have the talent to go after him. Billingsley would have to be in the deal most likely (assuming Kershaw is untouchable), though I don't think this would be too tough to bare.
A rotation of Bedard, Penny, Lowe, Kuroda, Schmidt, with Broxton and Saito closing it down, would be formidable. With Pierre and Furcal opening the line up, it'd be old fashion "scratching out runs". Not to mention Martin's ability to steal. However, they are not going to be able to piece together a power hitting offense so without a true ace the rotation can't sustain that kind of offense.
Posted by: RandomScrub | December 11, 2007 at 09:34 PM
Maybe I missed it but doesn anyone have any stats on Kuroda? What did he do in Japan? What does he translate to in the MLB I'm thinking a decent 3 pretty good 4 but I haven't seen any stats.
Posted by: NLBaseball21 | December 11, 2007 at 09:48 PM
Wow, I hope we do end up getting this guy it will help us not throw alway many of our young talent guys.Hopefully we could get him.I always had a feeling that he will prefer LA over Seattle. Now we need find a team that will take Pierre, hopefully the White Sox could push for him.
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | December 11, 2007 at 09:56 PM
The Orioles wouldn't give the Dodgers Bedard for anything short of Billingsley/Kershaw and Kemp, so it's not going to happen. Because the Dodgers won't deal those guys. Billingsley is on his way to being a Bedard type pitcher. Give him a year or two, and he'll be one of the league's best.
If the Dodgers do sign Kuroda, it gives them the opportunity to be patient. They can wait out the free agent outfield market, and then try to deal Juan Pierre. Most likely to the White Sox...
Posted by: Speedy | December 11, 2007 at 09:57 PM
If we did get Kuroda (who should be a solid number three starter) then we should:
1. Trade Pierre for anything we can get. Let Ethier and Kemp play everyday.
2. Let LaRoche play. Give him a full year.
3. Beat the Giants
Posted by: jeremydodger | December 11, 2007 at 10:06 PM
Kuroda's stats from Japan are worse than DiceK's and Kei Igawa's. And we all know how Igawa turned out.
Posted by: epic | December 11, 2007 at 10:14 PM
Got it from a Mariner fan in Japan that Sanspo is reporting that Kuroda told his former team (Hiroshima Carp) that he is going to L.A. on the 12th to sign the contract with the Dodgers.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 11, 2007 at 10:20 PM
Kuroda's stats are also better than Saito's were, and we all know how he turned out. Actually, this underlying assumption that all Japanese pitchers are alike and their stats all transfer the same is bogus.
Posted by: shhango | December 11, 2007 at 10:24 PM
Agree Jeremydoger:
At this point I'm willing to trade Pierre for some relief help.If the White Sox want him they should give us two sold relief pitchers.
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | December 11, 2007 at 10:36 PM
LAD Lavigne, why do the Dodgers even care what they get for Pierre? If they can trade him without having to eat much of the salary, even if it's for a 28 year old in A ball, it's a positive. No Pierre means more ABs for both Kemp and Ethier, both significantly better hitters, and defenders.
Don't get greedy. We know Pierre sucks at playing baseball. Let's trade him quickly before the White Sox or Rangers figure out how bad he is.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 11, 2007 at 11:05 PM
I would trade Pierre for a bucket of Popeye's chicken. In fairness though, their chicken is spiced to perfection...and Pierre sucks!
Posted by: PurpleStuff | December 11, 2007 at 11:25 PM
Where are you finding his stats?
Posted by: NLBaseball21 | December 11, 2007 at 11:28 PM
DodgerBruin, I agree with you but we can't just trade Pierre for nothing, we at least need to get a guy that could help us in any way.Hopefully we do trade him.I really don't want Kemp or Either to get traded so trade Pierre!
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | December 11, 2007 at 11:41 PM
Here's where you can find any Japanese players stats:

LAD Lavigne, trading Pierre (even for nothing) would free up $9 MM/year for the next 4 years. They could then easily use that cash to pick up a reliever better than anybody they could hope to get in a deal for Pierre. If Torre isn't willing to relegate him to the bench, Pierre will actively hurt the team by playing (Ethier and Kemp are both far more productive players and better defenders). Dumping Pierre (if we can find someone dumb enough to take him) is a huge plus even if the Dodgers get nothing back in return when you consider the cash windfall and the increased production by getting Kemp AND Ethier in the lineup.
Posted by: PurpleStuff | December 11, 2007 at 11:58 PM
Signing Kuroda would be a good thing (assuming it's only 3 years and around $12MM/yr). This signing will help the rotation without giving up Kemp, Bills, or Kershaw.
I'm very comfortable w/ an opening day rotation of Penny, Lowe, Bills, Kuroda, and Schmidt.
Also, DODGER BRUIN was right to say we should trade Pierre for anything or nothing. Pierre is a negative on the squad. Any AB he has takes away ABs from better outfielder (Kemp/Ethier/Young).
Posted by: kbrooks2LA | December 12, 2007 at 12:00 AM
Stop copying everything I say kbrooks2LA.
If Schmidt is even half of what he was prior to the injury I like that rotation. The problem the Dodgers had was at the back end of the rotation after Schmidt and later Wolf went down with injuries. If Penny/Lowe/Billingsley duplicate last year's performance and the back end is just serviceable the Dodgers should be in great shape (especially considering the upgraded lineup with Kemp/Loney playing from day one and replacing Pierre's atrophied bat with Andruw Jones).
Posted by: PurpleStuff | December 12, 2007 at 12:06 AM
The White Sox have an idea how bad Pierre is, they had to listen to us Cub fans complain about him for a year...fyi... you could probably get him for McDougal...
Posted by: Dave | December 12, 2007 at 12:09 AM
By way of illustration: Kuo, Tomko, Schmidt, Loaiza, Hendrickson, and Stults (who combined to form the 4-5 spots in the rotation after Wolf went down) combined to go 10-35 last year. A .500 record out of those spots would have resulted in a division title. Here's hoping Kuroda and a healthy Schmidt can combine to at least break even.

This just in Jeff Kent re-sign with Dodgers

Tim, you will want to check with your advertisers if you want to keep this site "kid friendly" as you have stated earlier. I just saw an ad that showed a woman looking suggestively into a camera on a bed...Not exactly kid friendly. I personally can ignore this kind of stuff but I thought I'd bring it to your intention. I'm sure someone who talks to you on a more regular basis will bring this up as well.
Posted by: CubsFan84 | December 12, 2007 at 01:31 AM
The problem with trading Pierre is that he still has 4 years left on his contract. If he only had 1 or 2 years left, I'd advocate for attempting to get a reliever out of another team. However, because there is a 4 year/$36 mil. contract, the Dodgers can either eat the contract and get some league average reliever in return, or attempt to give Pierre away for a minor leaguer.
Personally, I like our relievers. Currently, we can have a relief core of Saito, Broxton, Proctor, Beimel and Loaiza as the long man. That leaves one spot open in the bullpen for Brazoban, Hendrickson, Houlton, Stults, Hull, Kuo, and Greg Miller to fight for. I think any of those players are better than any reliever we might get from another team.
Thus, trade Pierre for a non-prospect, and negotiate the minimal amount we need to contribute to the team we send Pierre to so that we get him off our roster.
I think Delwyn Young is a better 4th OF than Pierre. And he's slightly cheaper, thus allowing us to eat part of Pierre's contract without it affecting our bottom line.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 12, 2007 at 05:37 AM
Delwyn Young is clearly a better 4th outfielder than Pierre. I am a better outfielder than Pierre.
Colletti is just going to have to "admit" that he made a mistake and trade Pierre for a non-prospect and eat some of his bloated salary.
Posted by: kbrooks2LA | December 12, 2007 at 02:07 PM
Interesting to see how Jason Schmidt will pitch next season, we payed a lot of money for him, he looked pretty decent in San Diego. But back to Pierre, at this point we should trade him for anything it could be a player from A class or just anybody but just trade him.
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | December 12, 2007 at 11:59 PM
Hell, if I were Colletti I'd trade Pierre to the Giants for their bat boy and a bag of balls, AND pay a third of his salary.
