« Padres To Acquire First Rule 5 Pick, Take Barton? | Main | Beckett Won't Ask For Restructured Deal »

Dodgers Sign Andruw Jones

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 7:42am: Make that $36.2MM, plus a no-trade clause.  I wonder why it was done with the huge $12.2MM bonus.  Meanwhile, Tom Krasovic said the Padres never got around to bidding on Jones despite the talk of a one-year, $17MM offer.

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 1:14am: The salary structure to Jones' deal is interesting: $9MM in '08, $15MM in '09, and a $12MM signing bonus.  That setup could make Jones much more tradeable if the need arises.

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 12:23am: Tony Jackson has a hunch that the Dodgers will now trade Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier in a package for a frontline starter.

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 11:50pm: The Dodgers have reached an agreement with Jones - two years, $36MM. Despite all the posturing from Scott Boras, the Dodgers got Andruw for a reasonable rate and term.  Nice move by Ned Colletti.

FROM 12-5-07 at 11:12pm:

Ned Colletti and Andruw Jones haven't reached common ground, but they did make progress today.  It sounds like Colletti may be warming to the idea of three years.  No deal is expected before the end of the Meetings, though.

While the Royals have well-documented interest in Jones, former teammates indicate he prefers the NL.  In regards to his poor 2007, the article suggests a secret elbow injury may have contributed.

I wouldn't say the injury was secret because he had a hyperextended elbow. What that means he couldn't extend it all the way. The Braves new this.

I am pretty much just quoting Gurnick on that one:

"What happened to Jones in 2007? Trying to play with a secretly hyper-extended elbow didn't help, but such decisions are commonplace with free agency looming."

Personally I hadn't heard of it but it sounds like Braves fans and the team knew.

great job with this site. Amazing!

3 years 50 mill. Almost Half of Hunter. Reasonable? I'd do it.

Its done according to mlb.com...2 years 36 million...

Holy SHNIT, good call redsox hater. I likey!

18 mila year for two years, not bad for a guy who had a piss poor year and a gold glove

"Nice move by Ned Colletti."

I literally thought I would never hear those words. Pigs are flying and hell just froze over!

Good move by the Dodgers, but it just emphasizes how terrible the Pierre signing was.

Ned did it. I must say I am shocked, considering AJ is a Boras client.

i hope for the dodgers sake that jones doesnt now suffer from a disease i call the Sexson disease

Pierre, Jones,Kemp in the OF. Andre Ethier , Delwyn Young and Jason Repko will battle it out for the 4th spot, assuming the Dodgers don't make any moves.

I don't hate Ned anymore. Now I just dislike him. If he finds a way to dump Pierre, I might propose to him.

The Dodgers seem hell-bent on moving Kemp (he's been the centerpiece of nearly every Dodger rumor and they're on record as being unhappy with his attitude), so I imagine Ethier will hold onto the 4th spot while Young gets more seasoning in the minors. In fact, I suspect this move is the first step in moving Kemp. Not sure that's a great move on their part given Kemp's upside but the jury's out until one sees the return they get for him.

Devlsh, although you make a good point, I'm going to choose to ignore that and enjoy the possibility of a Ethier, Jones, Kemp outfield.

Trade PeeWee now!

Any chance the Dodgers try to move Kemp/LaRoche for Santana? I know they haven't been involved in the talks at all, but as a Twins fan that possibility gets me way more excited than anything out there right now. Also, the Dodgers don't really seam to like either guy very much, so it seems like a possibility if they want to go for Santana. Thoughts?

No Im pretty sure they won't trade for Santana b/c they don't want to pay him.

Id love to see Matt Kemp come to the sox

MikeTwins, Bedard is probably the pitcher the Dodgers will go after. Johan Santana will cost LA too much to sign long term. I think Eric Bedard makes more sense now for LAD.

rolen for pierre and laroche

straight up, no cash considerations

what ya think?

MikeTwins, I just suggested that exact trade in the "Not Much Cooking With Johan" thread!

I still think the Dodgers are fools if they develop so many great prospects to the cusp of the majors, then trade them away so they can star for other teams. Their prospects are just too good and too advanced at this point to trade away (for me at least). It would be one thing if these prospects were in High-A or AA, but LaRoche has raked for 1.5 years in AAA and Kemp has done very well in his stints in the majors. Not like there is any question these guys will hit in the majors.

I would be elated with a Kemp/LaRoche for Johan trade. I have been praying that trade would happen for about 4 months now. Now that LA has Jones, maybe they could warm up to the idea of having the best pitcher in the galaxy for the next 5-6 years?

anybody has an opinion on my trade proposal??

rolen for pierre and laroche

no cash considerations.

I have been hoping to get Kershaw/Kemp/LaRoche for a while, but now that I see the market is much less, Kemp/LaRoche would make me very happy. I think Johan would be absolutely ridiculous in LA, with no DH and pitching in the mostly pitcher-friendly NL west parks. But, I haven't heard any indication of them wanting to pay him, so I could definitely see them go after Bedard instead (unfortunately).

Braves fan here, if this is true, you have a great defensive CF to replace Juan, who was garbage. It will be interesting to see how a 'swing for the fences hitter' does in a pitchers park in LA. I say 30-35 HR with his typical .270 BA. Not a bad idea for two years. At the very least, LA upgrades the defense. Sad to see him go, but he isn't worth that money. LA has to cash to do it... more power to them. LA has assembled the 'we will take your once prominent player' line up: Kent, Nomar, Jones.

Samael, I wouldn't do a Laroche for Rolen straight up trade. Rolen is washed up but still has a good glove. But when you toss Pierre in the mix, I might actually consider it. That tells you something: Pierre has negative value.

Matt Kemp for Troy Glaus?

This is a good signing. A little too much per year but the 2 year commitment is really nice.

My Angels signing of Hunter is looking really bad right about now.

Anyone notice that it's 36.2 million and not 36. Boras was a man of his word as Andruw now makes 100k more annually then Torii. Bang up job Satan!

I think Kenny Williams is forcing me to turn to the bottle this offseason.

I think they gave Jones a no-trade clause.

i think they will go after johan. i mean, you could go after bedard, but you would have to give up more prospects to get a guy who's only been good for about 2 years (and got injufred last year) and eventually have to sign for a lot of money anyways. why not go for the best, johan, who will require less prospects (think billingsley, laroche, kemp/ethier). his ERA would be in the high 1's in the NL West.

I agree with that! Hopefully the Sox can make a run at Fukudome to atleast salvage something this offseason it has been depressing... Last summer was a very dark one a we all must toughen up because this winter just got a whole lot darker, by spring it might be to dark to see!

Ned, if you are listening, you do not trade Matt Kemp. The reason he is at the center of every rumor is because EVERY TEAM WANTS HIM! That should give you a hint Coletti that the guy is worth holding on to (if the .890 OPS w/ ridiculous speed he put up last year wasn't enough).

This move is great for all the reasons mentioned (no long term risk, not paying any more than other guys are getting who've been less productive over their careers, etc.) but if you turn around and trade Kemp all you have done is made your team more expensive.

If I hear one more person mention Juan Pierre playing left field I'm gonna vommit. Kemp AND Ethier are light years better than this clown. Not to mention, Ethier played left a good amount at the end of last year. Pierre should be peaced out in any deal possible or given away for nothing(even if we have to pay half his salary we are saving money on the chunk some other team picks up). Pierre is absolutely worthless. The Dodgers can still go after a top pitcher with a package of Kershaw, Laroche, and Ethier but Kemp must remain off limits. The guy is gonna be a star (and based on his production last year he already is one).

minnesotatwins--thats a nice fantasy. I really don't see the D's shelling out for Santana, just don't see it, or trading that many young guys at once. Its conceivable that Kemp will be moved by I don't think Bills/Kershaw will be. I think they need LaRoche cause Nomore sure as hell isn't starting next year.

I've been saying this on this site for over a while now. Tings take place in certain order. You don;t dump Pierre without having Jones. Boras would have raped us if we dumped Pierre. Now he will be aadios.

1. We signed Jones
2. We now dump Pierre
3. We will sign Kurado

See you in the Spring and Fall when we are playing for the NL pennant.

Furcal
Martin
Kemp
Jones
Loney
Kent
Ethier
LaRoche

Penny
Lowe
Bills
Kurado
Schmidt/Loaiza/Kuo/Mcdonald/Kershaw

For the last time, Kemp, Loney, and Billingsley are not prospects! They are solid Major Leaguers going into their second full season. Here are the years these guys had last year:

Loney: 344 AB, .331/.381/.538 (and he plays gold glove caliber 1B)
Kemp: 292 AB, .342/.373/.521 (he's also faster than Pierre)
Billingsley: 12-5, 3.31 ERA, 1.33 WHIP

These are basically the best guys on the team. They are not prospects and you don't trade guys who are this good for ANYBODY when you have them under control on the cheap for years to come.

By comparison looking at the guys Detroit gave up for Miggy and the years they had:

Maybin: .473 OPS in 49 ABs
Miller: 5-5, 5.62 ERA, 1.75 WHIP

These guys are prospects. They may turn out to be awesome (and by all accounts both will be very good) but they have never done it at the big league level. All these guys I mentioned for the Dodgers have. Laroche, Kershaw, Abreu, and Meloan are the Dodgers prospects, not Kemp, Loney, or Billingsley (if Ned trades any of them I will burn his house down).

Is it just me, or is this the first GOOD free agent signing this year?

Got bored... is this fair for all parties?

Lad - Bedard, Rolen

Stl - Tejada, Loaiza, Ja. McDonald

Bal - Duncan, Kemp, An. Reyes, LaRoche, Jon. Meloan

you guys are in for a rude awakening if you are looking to bat andruw at clean up in chavez ravine

also, how is juan pierre garbage?

the guy basically put up his career norms last year. you should've known what you were getting into.

it's not his fault colleti is a dunce.

As for Andruw batting cleanup, I don't think the Dodgers have anyone else who's more qualified at the moment. Jones had the worst offensive numbers of his career last year. His numbers can only go up. Plus, it's not that hard when your batting .222, atleast I hope so. In due time, Kemp or Loney will take that role, but I think next year is too early for them to bear that responsibility. If AJ shits the bed again, it'll probably be Jeff Kent batting 4th again. I hate Jeff Kent.

Juan Pierre IS garbage. I'm sure you've seen him play, but if you haven't, all he does is slap the ball and run, or fly out to shallow outfield. I've never seen so many opposing players run from 1st to 3rd on hits to CF. Pierre must have set a record with that noodle he calls an arm. It's comical when you see him throw the ball to the cutoff man Furcal standing half way up the outfield. Then Furcal actually throws out the runner, and Pierre has a grin on his face like he deserved that assist.

He did almost put up his career norms, but his career norms = poop. But your right, it is Ned's fault for signing him, but that doesn't change the fact that Pierre is the worse player in the MLB.

Bluesilv...hahaha...playing for the pennant...Your finished fourth in your division...You would be lucky if you won the Wild Card...Your team hardly puts up any offense...Even with the signing of Andruw Jones is not going to put you at the top...I admit he will be better next year...but he has always hit for a low average...And Chavez Rivine is more of a pitchers park...You should just gut the whole infield except for 3b...Nomar Kent and Furcal are all pretty useless...You would be better off starting all your youngsters and let them grow together...

If the Dodgers do what I pruposed they have a legit shot at the Pennant. You obviously don't know how good the young players are on this team. Furcal will be bcak to his normal production now that his ankle has healed. How is Jeff Kent useless when he hits .300 and has 20 HR's. Loney is a bad ass. LaRoche should be just fine at 3rd. Nomar is a utility man now. Ethier, Jones and Kemp are a solid offensive and defensive OF. The pitching staff is solid up and down with young fireballers knocking on the door ready to take over. Name a pitching staff deeper than the Dodgers in the N.L. assuming we sign Kurado. All they have to do is get to the playoffs and they have Penny, Lowe and Billingsley. I'll put those 3 up against any 3 in the N.L. any day. What are you basing your statements on?

I don't know if anyone said Jones was going to bat 4th. But even if he did, using batting average to tell the worth of a player is misguided. You're better off using OPS+. And outside of Andruw's last year, where he was hurt, he's been about a 120 OPS+ guy (Torii Hunter was 122 last year).
And the Dodgers finished 4th in a division that had top 3 records in the National League. It was also a division the Dodgers were leading up to July 30th, when injuries destroyed the rotation.

21st in runs...21st in ops...24 in slg...26 in home runs...Jones career .262 avg...obp of .342...Would you put up those three against Peavy Young and Maddux...What about Smoltz Hudson Glavine...Lowe was 12-14 last year...

Johan Santana was 15-13 last year. Miguel Batista was 16-9. Who would you rather have? Wins are worthless in determining how good a pitcher is.
Peavy, Young, Maddux combined ERA+ (386).
Smoltz, Hudson, Glavine (361).
Penny, Lowe, Billingsley (407).
So yes, yes I would put those three up against your pitchers.

The only real difference in that stat is Lowe and Maddux...And I am probably not the only person that would choose Maddux to Lowe...

Anyways...I do like this trade...However I do not think this and as bluesilv the *possible* signing of Kurado would put you "playing for the NL pennant...

i'm not using batting average or any other stat to tell you andruw is a terrible clean up hitter

i've watched most of the guy's games for the last 11 years. he is a terrible situational hitter that is ill suited to be hitting clean up in any line up. braves fans nicknamed him "black hole" and "rally killer" for a reason. and this is not a trend that just started last year. andruw just used to hit for more power so we were bit more forgiving.

and his "swing for the fences" approach is more than likely going to fail miserably in a park like chavez ravine.

i'm just saying if you were dissapointed in juan pierre's production, you're gonna have a blast with andruw.

you guys can keep convincing yourself he's worth 18 mil per though. at least he plays good defense.

Given the cubs new desire for speed and lefties any chance that pierre goes back with the dodgers eating some salary? Pinella has already stated he may actually move Sori out of the leadoff spot and if we get Fukudome we would have
Pierre
Sori
Lee
Aram
Fukudome
Soto
Derosa
Theriot
Pitcher

this is assuming LA would want pitching and prospects back for pierre. Not a horrible lineup. Who would the Dodgers expect back - maybe 2 of patterson/marshall/pagan/veal/cedeno.. or would they want something ridiculous like hill

First off, if you want to take Maddux over Lowe, be my guest. However, Maddux had an ERA+ of 98 (below league averague). Lowe's was 118. SO take the worse pitcher, who is another year north of 40.
As for the perception of Jones as a "rally killer" and unable to hit "situationally," we'll take him. In 2006, when he was healthy, he was such a "rally killer" he hit 41 HRs, and had a 126 OPS+.
And while Dodger Stadium has the perception of a pitcher's park, that's not the case anymore. When the infield foul grounds was cut in half, Dodger Stadium essentially became a neutral park. And actually, it's a park that HRs can be hit in. It's doubles and triples that die in Dodger Stadium.
And if the Cubs wanted to take Juan Pierre (75 OPS+) and offer NOTHING, I'm sure the Dodgers would accept. He is a terrible, horrible baseball player. Worse even than Eckstein, sadly.

reasonable rate??
18 mil per season for a guy who hit 222 last year with a 311 on base %. Boras still has the magic touch, that siging is almost as bad as the Hunter signing. Its nice that its not a long length but if Andruw does rebound hes gonna be looking for 20+ in 2 years time.
If guys like Jones and Hunter can get 18, what the hell is a real star like Vladdy gonna get next winter??

Wow look what Boras did for Beltran... good timing:

05: $10M, 06: $12M, 07: $12M, 08: $18.5M, 09: $18.5M, 10: $18.5M, 11: $18.5M

I was worried for a second that Torii and Jones would be making more than Beltran, who is clearly a better player than both.

some of you statheads are really out of your minds

you can flash all the hr and ops numbers you want, don't say i didn't warn you around the all star break

This guy destroys the Padres every time we play him...

and now he's in our division...

Chillin - your comments about Jeff Kent and Juan Pierre's arm are killing me at work. I can picture Pierre's smile. Kudos.

And you are right, Furcal has a cannon at SS. It's definetly been missed since Renteria has taken his place. Yunel has a better arm than Rent, but I'm pretty sure that Furcal's is the best in the league (maybe Reyes is better, but it's close).

"Juan Pierre IS garbage."

I dunno about garbage, he does have some value. But I still dont see how anybody could give him that outrageous contract. He's got 4/$36 left on his deal and im curious as to how much the Dodgers would have to eat of that in order to dump him

I really like this signing. Adds some power, but doesn't hamstring us w/ a long-term deal should AJ not perform.

Trading Matt Kemp would be an insanely stupid thing for the Dodgers to do. He will be their CF in 3 years. The guy is a superstar in the making and he's already an excellent player.

LAD is now 1 trade from winning the division. Trade that little French rat for anything. I did like the Pierre/Laroche for Rolen idea. Even if Rolen doesn't hit like he used to, at least Pierre is out.

And yes, Juan Pierre is the worst player in the MLB.
