« Geoff Jenkins Signs With Phillies | Main | Odds and Ends: Roberts, Otsuka, Walker, DaVanon »
George King has a few quotes from Phillies' assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. today. Basically, the Phils wouldn't go past three years on Kyle Lohse, and have dropped out of the bidding for the Scott Boras client.
King indicates that this might put the Mets in the lead for Lohse, perhaps the best of a mediocre group of free agent starters. Ken Davidoff, however, wrote yesterday that the Mets "did not seem particularly interested" in Lohse at the current price. Tim Brown wrote on Monday that both the Phils and Mets had four-year offers out to Lohse.

I can only hpe Lohse's first half is as bad as last year's. He'll toss some good batting practice for the rest of the NL East for the next 4 years if the Mets sign him.

At that price tag, I'm sure Gillick is hoping like hell that the Mets sign him. Not knocking Lohse - he's an innings-eater who has a chance to be slightly above average in a given year. But he's sure not worth 4/$40M, not with guys like Colon, Benson, Livan, etc., still on the market and likely to come cheaper or with a shorter-term commitment.

I have nothing against Lohse so I feel bad saying this, but.... I hope NO ONE signs him and Lohse gets so frustrated with Boras that he drops him and signs on his own. We all know Boras wants to make some team overpay tremendously this year to "redeem" himself.
