Phillies Rumors: Iguchi, Inge, Silva, Ensberg

Sounds like there's a whole lot of 'nothin' going on with the Phillies.

  • As you know, the Phils are out on Hiroki Kuroda.
  • Yesterday the Phillies made an offer and a second improved offer to Tadahito Iguchi.  Iguchi is looking for a three-year deal for around the $16.5MM Kaz Matsui received.
  • Todd Zolecki says the Phils have "kicked around" Brandon Inge's name; he's definitely available. The general sentiment is that the Tigers would have to eat some of the $19.1MM owed to Inge over the next three seasons.  Plus, the Phillies already tried the defense-first idea at third base.
  • Talks with Mike Cameron went nowhere, as the Phillies didn't want to consider a multiyear deal. Aaron Rowand is also a long shot.  Not a very exciting Meetings for Phillies fans.
  • Scott Lauber checks in this morning and says Carlos Silva would like to return to the Phillies.  The interest isn't mutual, however, if Silva continues to ask for four or five years.
  • Lauber suggests Morgan Ensberg is a strong non-tender candidate and someone the Phils should look at.

Isn't there anything the Phillies can do? Going into the season with a platoon in right, a platoon at third, shaky starting pitching and an old bullpen isn't encouraging.

Good luck getting 100 wins Jimmy.

You lost Rowand, and added Lidge...

That's going to give you an ADDITIONAL 11 wins?

I've come to expect nothing less and certainly nothing more from our Phils.

*sigh*

what in gods green earth do you want them to do ?? they dont have the money to go out and spend 12 mill a year on a mediocre pitcher, theres no prospects to trade... they will most likely find a way to keep rowand and have the same team they had last year with a little better pitching... 1 thing i have about being a philly sports fan is that most of them whine too much

hate** sorry... not have..

What do you mean they don't have the money to go out and spend...? They've got tons of money. Hell, one of their owners just sold his company for $3billion. They're cheap! We whine b/c it's the same bs every year. They're so close to being WS contenders(not just division contenders), yet they settle for mediocrity and raised ticket prices.

yea... theres a good idea, lets ask a limited partner in the phillies ownership group that physically has nothing to do with the phillies for a billion dollars to spend on a baseball team.

very logical

the team made the playoffs, of course the ticket prices will go up, they always do and people continue to go.

they have a 100 million dollar payroll, and built a new stadium, i dont really consider that cheap, people want them to go spend 12 mill on carlos silva and next year everyone will be bitching about "wtf would they sign carlos silva"

What? Middleton doesn't have anything to do with Phillies? He's partial owner and was instrumental in the Phils stepping up and paying for Thome. Get a clue.

What's this 1999? 100 million payroll?

I agree, that I wouldn't overpay for Silva and those of his ilk. But stop passing Glendon Rusch and Rule V guys as answers. Spend money on draft pics like other teams!!

Jersey, you're right. I curse the fact that the Phils haven't greatly improved like the Mets have...

They're right in not giving 4 years to Silva. Ensberg sounds like a decent upside play, how is his glove at 3rd?

There is light at the end of the tunnel in the rotation for 2009 with Carrasco and Savery likely on the way...until then, it should be another roller-coaster ride Phils season with a lot of high scoring games

they payroll is 103 million, sorry for not being exactly on point.

and the reason he ponied up the money was because the team was garbage (in 2001 they were tolerable) for all the years prior, so they went and spent all the big bucks to A. try and revive the team and B. put people back in the seats (thome, wagner, new park).

as a buisness man he put the money up because the franchise was struggling, not because they didnt win the national league. Ticket sales are back up, so theres NO reason to spend money just to make the team better, theyre gonna sell tickets either way. Hes a minority owner and only cares about making the money, not the team

and i think they have a lot of faith in scott mathieson, but isnt he hurt still ? or not playing till into the year ? i honestly only think theyre a starter and a bullpen arm away from really being an NL east contender, 3B isnt a huge worry for me

@ wayne gomes

Hey... I never said that the Mets have improved either.

However, nobody on the Mets is running his mouth about next year either.

Hey JerseyMet fan.

How about Myers is now a starter. So they lose myers as a closer and insert Lidge. They lose Loshe and insert Myers.

And its only Dec. 6th. Just because nothing is happening now, doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. A deal for Freddy Garcia was a last minute deal. Might not have worked out as hoped, but still a good deal at that time.

Mets have done nothing.

all that combined = 100 wins.

Give me a break.

Your offense lost a big piece. Your bullpen lost a big piece. Yes, Myers moving back to the rotation will help, but replacing him with Lidge weakens the bullpen.

Rollins didn't say "if we sign a bunch of really good players we will win 100 games".

As-is, the Phillies are a mid-80 win team.

Mets have done nothing?

Schneider > PLD
Church > Green
Sanchez > Mota

They aren't major moves, but they are definitely improvements.

schneider = PLD if that

and what about the rotation ?

phillies rotation > mets rotation

mets bullpen > phillies bullpen

phillies lineup > mets lineup

Can you read?

I never said the Mets were better than the Phillies. I never said the rotation was better (even though it is), I never said the bullpen was better (even though it is), and I certainly never said the lineup was better (i'll give a SLIGHT edge to the Sillies).

We're talking about whether or not the Phillies are a 100 win team. Jimmy thinks so, and I think he's insane.

I'm not saying the Mets are better or that the Mets are a 100 win team. All I said was that the Phills lost a BIG part of their offense last year. Putting Myers back in the rotation isn't going to fix everything. It's ESPECIALLY not going to add 11 wins to last year's total.

Jimmy says a lot of things that may look a little silly, but you can bet he'll be backing it up on the field this year. And no I don't expect 100 wins, but the guy obviously can handle the pressure he puts on himself by talking to the media.

I do still think the Phils need an everyday 3B who is a real 3B, so that Dobbs can platoon with Werth and serve as the #1 PH. That strengthens INF D, OF production and the bench with 1 move
