« Jonathan Mayo Discusses Bruce For Bedard | Main | Carlos Pena Could Sign Long-Term »
MLB.com's Jim Molony talked to an A's source who expects Joe Blanton to stay put and be Oakland's Opening Day starter. The offers so far must not have been encouraging.
We haven't really heard the specifics of any Blanton offers. The closest we came to learning Billy Beane's asking price was on December 20th, when Buster Olney said:
Have heard that the Mets could land Joe Blanton with this package: center fielder Carlos Gomez, pitcher Aaron Heilman and pitcher Kevin Mulvey.
Aside from the Mets, the Reds, Indians, and Mariners reportedly had some level of interest in Blanton.

if the offers are not there, no problem keeping blanton. he's solid and it wouldnt be the worst thin to have a lock 200in in the rotation. Its possible Street still gets traded i think.

I wish the chisox had a farm system to try and get him.

I second nrmaxxs statement.
I may be so bold to state that it probably wasnt related to a nefarious tryst with his GF...rather he is a fellow mets fan who felt the package being asked from the mets was entirely too much to give up for an innings eater.

why is blanton labeled an "innings eater"? livan/lohse etc are innings eaters having 2 out of 3 seasons with era under 4 in the AL is considered an innings eater?

Blanton is labeled an innings eater because essentially he is, albeit a very good one. Over the last three years he's shown nothing to prove he's a top of the rotation starter. Although he posted identical 1.217 WHIPs in 2005 and 2007, for some reason in 2006 it jumped to 1.54, as his ERA jumped way up to 4.82. He doesnt strike out a lot of guys, and opponents have batted .271 against him. On a good team he's nothing more than a #3/4, an effective innings eater.
Effective inning eaters like Blanton don't get traded for 2 top prospects and a quality reliever. Minaya would be making a mistake if he dealt both Gomez and Mulvey for Blanton. Blanton would probably be able to provide an ERA around 3.75 in the NL on a consistent basis, but there's no way he should be the best pitcher on your team.
I think that if the Mets wanted to get Blanton for fair value, they would offer either Mulvey or Gomez, and then Aaron Heilman and Anderson Hernandez on top of that.

I third nrmax's statement as a fellow mets fan.
