« Braves Sign Soriano For Two Years | Main | Odds and Ends: Velocity, Santana, Teixeira »
The Blue Jays have signed catcher Rod Barajas to a one year deal worth $1.2MM. There is also a club option for 2009. Gregg Zaun did not fade in the second half, so it doesn't seem like a tandem thing is necessary. Maybe they just wanted a more solid backup than they had.
Barajas was all set to become Toronto's starting catcher for the '07 season, but he changed agents and pulled out at the last moment (cancelling his flight). It would've been a two-year deal worth $5.25MM - and J.P. Ricciardi had more than a handshake. Did the MLBPA pressure Barajas to back out? Read more about the situation on this blog (funny quote from the blog's author: "One thing is clear from all of this: Rod Barajas will never play for the Blue Jays after this fiasco.")
Barajas ended up signing a lesser deal with the Phillies that winter.

Hmmm, not a bad signing, he's definitely an upgrade over Sal Fasano, I just don't know why the Jays keep holding back Curtis Thigpen and Robinson Diaz.

"Where I come from, your word and your handshake means something"; and "Unfortunately, in his case it didn't. I'll leave it at that. We had more than a handshake,"

I think its a good signing, they wanted a defensive specialist more or less as a backup and this guy fits the bill.

Good job Blue Jays. At least this wasnt that 5M 2 yr deal last yr. I'd like to see Thigpen go into the spot though.

Good luck Hot Rod.... You absolutely were horrible here... I can't remember one good thing you did in a Philadelphia uniform.... You did more bad than good... By costing us so much money we had to use 3 roster spots for catchers down the stretch because you were so bad.... I hope you get busted with 4 hookers in a shady hotel room filled to the gills with booze and coke... At least then you can say you spent our money on something worthwhile....

this is an off-topic question, but...what's that website MLBTR used to reference often that has the details of every team's contractual obligations?

Bluejay24 how dare you! Sal Fasano is the father everyone always wanted! and to say Rod is better? Blasphamy. May God Fasano strike you down where you stand. But seriously... barajas is worthless. he's the reason brett myers threw his arm out in that extra inning game vs the fish

Toronto -- Where Ex-Philly catchers go to die.
(As a Braves fan I will personally miss Barajas in the NL East for all the above reasons stated)
