Carlos Pena Signs Three-Year Deal

According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, Carlos Pena has signed a three year deal worth about $24MM.  The deal buys out one year of free agency.

If the amount is accurate, the Rays have a serious bargain on their hands.  I was guessing this would cost $36MM.  Despite all the concerns about Pena's Boras representation, he's staying in Tampa Bay through 2010.

The Rays had $24MM laying around?

Who knew...

I can't believe Boras let him sign that contract. I would have expected at least $30M. Nice move for the Rays, now they just have to come up wth the money.

Only one truly great season by Pena, but this still does sound like a really good deal for the Rays.

This is kind of difficult to believe. Even if we wanted to give up some money for security (kind of the opposite of Holliday) he should have been able to do a bit better than that.

Good for the Rays...

I'm wondering if he can attain the same success he had last year. He's turning 30 in May, and yet his SLG last year (.627) was .130 higher than his career average. He's never come anywhere near that kind of SLG even in the minors.

First off - very nice by Rays. Even with abit of a dropoff from last year he will be worth what they are paying him. Secondly - Tim am I going crazy or posts disappearing from this thread. I could have sworn there were more posts - did you edit some out or is it site difficulties? Also posting is getting more difficult - and there seems to be big leaps of time from when it posts to when it appears - like hrs.

Boras isn't an idiot and neither are the 30 GMs. 2007 was more likely a fluke from Carlos Pena than anything else. The guy spent 7 seasons struggling to stay in the majors and never slugged over .500 (that was his highest in 62 ABs in his rookie year). Not saying he can't have a decent career, but expect him to be more Tony Clark, who has slugged over .500 7 times in 13 seasons, but made only $1 mil. each of the last 2 years than Texiera who just signed a 1 year deal in an arbitration year for $12.5 mil. I think we'll look back and say this was a great contract for Pena.

@ touchmymonkey

There was a cranky poster making comments earlier.

Tim just had to take out the trash.

Woo Hoo !! that means I am not the only one to have been edited ( long time ago I made a somewhat crude observation on how to pronounce the cubs new RF'er fukudome ). Of course the downside is if tim is going to do that kind of editing he is going to be a busy man.. go tim go lol

Exactly what JerseyMetFan said.

I am far from the comment police but here's what I will take out:

- Most swears are banned but if you are creative I will delete your comments. I want the comments to be something kids can read.

- Attacks/name calling on other posters

- Insulting me/my websites. This is my livelihood, why would I leave those comments up? I am all for constructive criticism and disagreement with me, we have that all the time here and it's good.

I usually take a Judge Dredd approach if you do either of the last two, deleting every comment you ever made and banning your IP.

goood sign for rays.
i was hoping to see pena hit 30+ or so next year.
we all know pena could hit towering home runs and he had great defence, but last year he put it togeather.

Good signing.

Even if production drops and the Rays don't feel they are getting good value Pena could be shipped elsewhere. $8m for a 1st baseman who can hit 30HR's in a down season is a great deal.

"The Judge Dredd approach"? Does that have anything to do with three sea shells? I really want to know how that would work.

Um yeah, baseball related, I think this was a solid deal for both sides. Pena has seen what it's like to have his career in jeopardy before, he was just looking for security. The Rays saw what Pena could do last year and expect at least 70% of that to occur over the next 4 years.

BigScooter is right, 2007 was a career year for Pena. Even he realizes it, and I am sure he is thrilled by his new contract.

Thanks Silver, someone sees the light.

Not to nerd out but the three seashells were from Demolition Man.

By Judge Dredd I meant that I am judge, jury and executioner on comments I don't like!!!
