Johan Santana Rumors

As usual, MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone sums up the latest on the Johan Santana front.  It's not Cerrone's fault, but it looks like things are pretty quiet right now.  A summary:

  • The Mets still appear to be the frontrunner.
  • As you might expect, Santana would like this done by month's end.  He's not stomping his feet and demanding it though.
  • And that's pretty much where we stand...I would like to see this thing take a dramatic turn, maybe a late bid from a random team.  But it looks like we'll keep slugging along.

This Johan Santana crap is ridiculous. Why would the Mets (or anyone) trade 5 top prospects to a guy they could get in 1 year for nothing? Sure, you'll have to outbid the only other 3-5 teams that can afford him, but it'd likely cost you the same amount (adjusted for inflation) as if you traded for him and then extended him, since his agent would REALLY have you by the balls if you just traded 5 prospects for the guy. I can't think of a better way to throw away negotiating leverage than to give up that much for a guy thats going to be an FA next year...

The Twins are lucky to get anybodies top prospects for Santana, since for anyone that can afford him he costs 5 prospects + 120 mil this year or 0 prospects + 120 mil next year.

Why would any team give up 5 prospects for Santana? Try because he's NOT going to be available as a Free Agent next year. The Twins ARE going to trade him to someone and that trade will be conditioned on a negotiating window to come to a deal with Santana's agent on an extension. Any GM that's holding back on making their best offer on the assumption they'll simply outbid everyone for his services next year is idiot. He won't be there.

So the GMs trading 5 prospects and 120 million aren't idiots for taking on more risk than Countrywide Financial?

It depends on your need as a franchise I dont think its a particularly good idea for the red sox since they already have a great rotation, however, for the mets its a great need. Now if all the teams in baseball decided together they wouldnt trade for johan. Then your situation would work out fine. However, thats collusion and its illegal and doesnt happen. (although some thought it was happening with AROD) So since santana will get traded you have to put in the best offer. Now do you think the best pitcher in baseball is worth 4 or 5 prospects... I DO

He is the best pitcher in baseball. Prospects our prospects. I cannot believe some of these comments I am reading. A pither like Santana, who is still in his prime, comes around once a decade if that. He is a already a first ballot hall of famer. Having him on your staff completely changes a playoff series, and you probobly would not have to worry about a big losing streak with him pitching every 5 days. It is amazing he is available! If he were on a big market team, he would never be available at any cost! I have watched him time after time shutdown my White Sox year after year. Trust me this guy is worth all of that and a bag of chips.
