« Rangers Sign Jason Jennings | Main | Twins Intrigued With Mets' Johan Offer? »
Padres GM Kevin Towers chatted at MLB.com today. The money quote:
The one position that we still may be looking at would be a corner outfielder. This would most likely come via a trade, rather than a free agent signing.
And then Towers concluded the chat with this:
That is all the time that I have for this chat today. I now need to go find a corner outfielder for you all.
From these clues I have surmised that the Padres may be looking to add a corner outfielder via trade. The Padres missed out on free agent targets Geoff Jenkins and Kosuke Fukudome.
Possibly available left fielders: Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, Marcus Thames, Jay Payton, Matt Murton, and Adam Lind. Right fielders who might be available include Xavier Nady, Randy Winn, and Austin Kearns. Nady and Bay have been of interest to San Diego previously this winter. Your thoughts on the most likely targets?

Maybe the Mets will trade them Church for Peavy...LOL. Just kidding.

How about Matt Murton? He needs a new home.
Posted by: GlenallenHill | January 16, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Reed Johnson perhaps? Give Lind the starting job.
Why not just sign Lofton?
Posted by: Dont Do That! | January 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM
You could pobably add Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui to the list of available LF's.
Posted by: tyler | January 16, 2008 at 11:05 PM
What about Matsui from the Yanks for prospects which may be spun for Johan?
Posted by: Macman22 | January 16, 2008 at 11:06 PM
Chris Duncan could be had; the lefthandedness of the Cardninals outfield (Duncan, Ankiel and eventually Colby Rasmus, makes him available for the right price.

Matt Murton makes sense for the Padres and their Moneyball mindset. They won't give up enough to get Bay. They've also "been there, done that" with both Payton and Nady so I don't see that. I think they covet and right-handed bat and the guy from the list that makes the mose sense to me with a nice upside in Kearns. That would be the guy if I'm KT.

I recall hearing some speculation about an Angels-Padres trade early in the offseason, mentioning Reggie Willits (or possibly Nathan Haynes).

Would you trade Headley or Antonelli for Matsui? Both of those guys would be nice for the Twins, but there's not a lot below them that fits our needs.

3 way deal:
Crisp + cash to the Pads
2 good pitching prospects to the Rangers
Teagarden + ok prospect to the Red Sox
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | January 16, 2008 at 11:18 PM
Griffey for Phil Nevin
Best : Trade : Ever!
Posted by: Mark | January 16, 2008 at 11:21 PM
The Pads wouldn't deal Headley or Antonelli, let alone both of them, for Matsui due to Matsui's age, contract and left-handed hitting bat. I think they're set on a right-handed hitting power bat.
Posted by: bkverona | January 16, 2008 at 11:28 PM
In addition to Randy Winn from the Giants I could also see the Padres interested in the return Dave Roberts. In fact I think the Padres might be more interested in Dave Roberts then Randy Winn because they currently do not have a true traditional leadoff hitter.
Posted by: giantsrainman | January 16, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Do you really think the Pads would want a a guy who'll turn 36 this year with 2 years $13M left on his contract?
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | January 16, 2008 at 11:38 PM
Do you really think the Yankees would be interested in Chase Headley or Matt Antonelli considering they already have a $275 million man at third and a young star at second? Unless the player would be included in a Santana deal, they have essentially no use to New York outside of quality trade value.
Posted by: scribbletone | January 17, 2008 at 12:11 AM
I don't see the Cubs giving Murton up yet with a possible Brian Roberts or other mid-to-high level trade possibly in the works. Jim Hendry is admittedly active in trade scenarios so do you give up Murton who may have some value? And for what return from the Padres?
Posted by: cyon204 | January 17, 2008 at 12:12 AM
what about the red sox and coco crisp, he used to be a corner outfielder for the indians, and theo epstien and kevin towers seem to enjoy working with each other
Posted by: tripper | January 17, 2008 at 12:13 AM
Winn for Kouzmanoff (sp?)
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | January 17, 2008 at 12:16 AM
Is Headley that far off from the big leagues? Kouzmanoff is a defensive liability at 3rd base, right? If the respective answers to these two questions is no and yes, why don't the Padres try Kouzmanoff in left field, and give Headley a shot at 3B? Does that make too much sense?
Posted by: mmontice | January 17, 2008 at 12:24 AM
Michael Barrett for Reed Johnson.
Posted by: Guitar Hero | January 17, 2008 at 12:30 AM
crisp and Daniel bard for cla merideth and tim stauffer
Posted by: tripper | January 17, 2008 at 12:49 AM
michael barret for jason bay seems to come back to mind. the pirates like barret wasnt this discussed before? they might as well throw in sanchez and the pads give a prospect to help each other get going padres up n pirates down lol
Posted by: Triplex | January 17, 2008 at 01:20 AM
If I was the front office I'd give you Payton and throw in $2.5 mil. All you have to do is get him off the O's 40 man roster.
Posted by: XD23 | January 17, 2008 at 01:25 AM
Barrett for Bay? Are you insane?! Bay is a hundred times more valuable than Barrett. And then "throw in Sanchez" for a prospect? So, the Pirates' 2 best hitters for a crap catcher and an unnamed minor leaguer. Wow. Just wow. Even the Pirates aren't that stupid.
To paraphrase, "Mr. Triplex, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

We aren't trading in the division for wynn or roberts. and for the last time we arent tading away headly, antonelli, or kouz!
the pirates price on bay is too high. i could see murton, but more realistically nady. something like barrett (who they have had interest in) and a low level prospect for nady. the pirates tho r asking too high a price on nady since they see him as an everyday player (something most teams don't). his arb years are almost up so they might as well get something for them since they have enough outfielders (especially CFs) to choke a horse.
Posted by: UCSDPadsFan | January 17, 2008 at 01:42 AM
Khalil Greene + Chase
Headley for Juan Rivera + Ervin Santana + Eric Aybar
Posted by: gman | January 17, 2008 at 03:31 AM
Why wouldnt the Padres be interested in Hideki Matsui?
What do the Padres need more than anything else? a solid middle of the order bat to help drive in runs.
What is Hideki Matsui? A perfect fit to slot right in front of Adrian Gonzalez.
What will it cost the Padres? Prob little to almost nothing, except the salary he's owed because the Yankees have already said they want/need to move payroll if they want to be serious players for Johan.
He's a proven veteran bat who will arguably be the best offensive piece in that lineup after Gonzalez who is signed right now to a reasonable short term market value to below market value contract.
it seems like a no-brainer to me.
Posted by: TurnTwo | January 17, 2008 at 06:58 AM
I wonder who the Padres would be offering if the Nats were willing to part with Austin Kearns?
Posted by: Nats Plan | January 17, 2008 at 07:02 AM
I wonder how the jays and Padres would fit together in a Lind deal. Good Young catcher? or something along those lines, I'd hate to trust a reliever or even in some sense a starter.
Posted by: Dev0 | January 17, 2008 at 07:10 AM
What about Adam Dunn?
ive heard his name linked to the pads before.

Ahahaha. I love it. I used that on themfightnwords a few months ago. Such a funny quote.

I find it funny that they would attempt to trade for Jason Bay, being that he was in their system before he was traded to Pittsburgh for Brian Giles.
Posted by: napes22 | January 17, 2008 at 08:26 AM
Don't forget Pat the Bat Burrell. Although the Phils may not be as desperate to unload him as they were previously, since he only has one year left on the books and showed some late signs of life last year
Posted by: wayne gomes | January 17, 2008 at 09:07 AM
Austin Kearns for Khalil Green?
Wouldn't like to see it myself considering Green doesn't stay healthy usually, but...I could see it as a possibility I think.
Posted by: bignatsfan | January 17, 2008 at 09:16 AM
Padres get:
Burrell, Helms
Phillies get:
Kouzmanoff, prospect (preferably pitching)
Burrell gives the Padres an above average arm, bat, and glove in LF. Helms will serve as a filler until Headley is ready to move up into the starting lineup. Although this would give the Padres an all-lefty outfield, Helms and Greene are still there to give the lineup SOME balance.
For the Phillies, this move would be a slight risk, considering they would be leaving a hole in left field. However, Kouzmanoff is no worse in the field than Helms, and has more upside. For the outfield, they could keep platooning options in order and just move Dobbs into a permanent OF spot.

Who cares if the trade is in division if it is a good trade?
Winn can bat 1st/2nd/3rd and can play all OF positions and has knowledge of playing a large OF. The knock is that he doesn't have a strong arm.
Kouz is an up an comer. The knock on him is 22 ERRORS.
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | January 17, 2008 at 09:45 AM
Im pretty sure Bay isnt a real option for them, the trade talks around him seem to be just a test of what they could get for him. Also, I think the Tigers are pretty intent on keeping Thames. They like him as a first basemen backup. Nady would be the most likely in my opinion
Posted by: Dashiz008 | January 17, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Matsui is 33 years-old, has 2 years and around 26 mil left on his contract, has no range in the outfield and bats left-handed. Those are the reasons why the Pads will not trade for him.
The Pads are not going to trade Headley, Antonelli, Kouz or Greene. Perhaps they would move Meredith for Murton? As for Kearns, maybe Meredith, Kyle Blanks and Cedric Hunter?
Bottom line: the Pads will not mortagage the future for a quick fix in the outfield, it's just not their style.
Posted by: bkverona | January 17, 2008 at 10:14 AM
phillyphan610: Burrell is a leftfielder, not left-handed. i agree with others, just move Kouz to LF and let Headly have 3B. and whoever said they don't have a leadoff man: Giles? all OBP, no power anymore
RF-Giles
2B-Iguchi
1B-Gonzalez
LF-Kouz
CF-Edmonds
3B-Headly
SS-Greene
C-Barrett

bkverona, if the Padres dont want to mortgage the future, then a package for Matsui makes all the more sense, right? he'll only cost a couple of low level guys, and some cash.
Posted by: TurnTwo | January 17, 2008 at 10:26 AM
TurnTwo- an earlier post suggested moving Headley and Antonelli for Matsui, hence the "mortgaging the future" reference. I'm not saying the idea doesn't make some sense, as long as it's "low-level" prospects and the Yanks throw in some $$ but knowing the Pads, I just don't see it. Plus, would Matsui waive his no-trade?
Posted by: bkverona | January 17, 2008 at 10:39 AM
What about Murton\Cedeno\Marshall for K. Green? Anyone?
Posted by: Aduncaroo | January 17, 2008 at 11:08 AM
bkv: I dont think the Yankees would necessarily ask for Headley or Antonelli in the deal. I think they'd be more interested in simply clearing the payroll in this type of deal.
I know when Matsui's name was involved with the Giants, it was reported he would agree to waiving it, but he never came out publically himself.
If the Yankees were to expand the deal past Matsui, maybe including someone like Kei Igawa, who the Padres were interested in last year, or another upper level MLB-ready arm, I dont think its out of the realm of possibility the Padres would be more amenable to moving one of the positional prospects.
Posted by: TurnTwo | January 17, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Here is a list of names: ANDRE ETHIER, MATT KEMP, OR JUAN PIERRE. I would trade the farm for ETHIER. Maybe they should consider Headley for right field. KT: I think its time to teach the Dodgers another lesson. Get'em good.
Posted by: hitttman | January 17, 2008 at 12:12 PM
What about Tony Gwynn Jr?
or Gabe Gross?
Either one could be had for probably just a prospect.
Posted by: Lidocaine | January 17, 2008 at 12:12 PM
The Pads must have good prospects, the majority of the posters seem to be hardcore fans not from San Diego.
Posted by: hitttman | January 17, 2008 at 12:23 PM
The player that makes the most sense in a Matsui trade is Kyle Blanks. He's a monster-sized 1B who mashes for avg and power; he's probably 1 to 2 years away from the big leagues as he's ready to take on AA ball right now, and another good showing there should easily make him one of the top 1B prospects in baseball. The Yankees have something of a void at 1B and the Padres already have Adrian Gonzalez. Of course this all assumes the Yankees are even interested in moving Hideki and that the Padres are willing to add 13MM to the payroll. I think it'd be a great move and Matsui would solidify the lineup, but who knows....
Posted by: AkulaMkii | January 17, 2008 at 12:32 PM
My apologies on the Burrell left-handed/left field mix up, not sure where my head was.
However, I did agree with whoever mentioned moving Headley into the outfield. Edmonds and Giles days are numbered, and moving Headley into the outfield to see what he could do could benefit the club for years to come.
Posted by: phillyphan610 | January 17, 2008 at 02:22 PM
The Padres are planning on trying Headley in the outfield in Spring Training if not sooner. I also agree that Kouz is the one that should get moved since he's not exactly Brooks Robinson at the hot corner. However, they're content to keep him there so it's Headley that is going to move if he's to stick with the big league team out of the Spring. Do not forget, Headley skipped AAA when he went to the Pads last season so opening up there is a real possibilty (hence the desire to find another corner guy). Plus, Giles is coming off of micro-fracture knee surgery and I believe they are quietly concerned about his status to start the season.
Posted by: bkverona | January 17, 2008 at 05:52 PM
Is Corey Patterson still a free agent? Thats who I would sign.
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 18, 2008 at 03:48 AM
The only reason they need one is to backup Giles and Edmonds because Hairston is solid to play every day.
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 18, 2008 at 03:49 AM
How about Duncan or Ankiel? Cards need another pitcher badly and are all lefty in the outfield. They could still field an outfield of Rasmus, Ludwick, and Ankiel/Duncan, whoever stays.
Posted by: birds09 | January 18, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Plus if you took Ankiel he and Jimmy can go shopping together. Rumor has it Ankiel doesn't pitch anymore but he does catch.
