Mets Dangled El Duque

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman:

The Mets quietly sought trade offers for Orlando Hernandez late this winter, with the idea that if anyone bit, they would sign Kyle Lohse. But apparently there were no takers.

Swapping El Duque's 140-150 innings for Lohse's 190 might add a few wins, given the replacement level pitchers the Mets went to in '07.   Hernandez at $6.5MM isn't  terribly appealing though.  The Mets could probably get Lohse for a similar amount on a one-year deal.  Maybe they still should and just force Hernandez into the bullpen whether he likes it or not.

Signing Lohse and throwing El Duque in the pen is the best option.

Don't get me wrong... he's earned a rotation spot with his arm, but lost it with the rest of his body.

If he complains, cut the man. Pelfrey will be more than willing to be the long man/spot starter out of the pen.

I completely agree that they need Loshe(and have been saying this since the Silva/Loshe "battle")even on a 2yr deal. Perez is gone, who knows what Pedro or Duque's futures are beyond this year, and COUNTING on them being healthy this year isn't a good idea. Their only real option is Pelfry. Even this season they're only 6 starters deep (2 of which could be on the DL quicker than Lidge), and we all know you need 7,8 maybe 9. Next season they'd be even more thankful that he's locked in at #3/4. Plus El Duque is the PERFECT relief Ace.

The Mets should be interested in Reed Johnson with their lack of outfield depth..any chance of a deal happening there?

Beltran
Alou
Church
Endy
Pagan
Easley
Marlon Anderson

Is there really a need for Reed?

Whatever move the Mets make, I think Pelfrey should be given the job if he goes out and has a good Spring. Any time you start relying on El Duque too much it can be a huge let down to the rest of the team.

He was hurt at the end of the last 2 seasons when we needed him most - let Pelfrey have the first crack.

Well he is far better than the last 3 and probably Chavez too if they want to upgrade a bit.

Easley and Marlon are already on the bench, and the can play the infield, so they are far more valuable than Reed.

I don't really think he's that much of an upgrade over Endy. Endy is one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball. Sure he may be an upgrade over Pagan, but at what cost? Likely too high to even bother with a minor upgrade.

Johnson has a far better arm and is a better fielder. No doubt about it. Easley is 39 years old and plays awful D...Johnson is a clear upgrade over any of them if Minaya is interested, but he likely isn't.

Martinez is 19 years old numb nuts...The Mets organization isn't going to hurt his development by calling him up at that age. Anyone who knows anything about baseball could tell you that Also, Alou hasn't hit 350 at-bats the past 2 seasons so Chavez is going to be spending alot of time in left.

Don't try to make it sound like you are a genius and degrade people who actually do know a thing or 2 about baseball.

I would say that Grant77 has a solid argument here. Considering that Moises Alou is incredibly injury prone, and Ryan Church belongs in a platoon, it wouldn't be an awful addition.

Actually, adding Reed Johnson to be the right handed hitter in a platoon with Ryan Church would be a solid idea. Those two would lock up the 600 at bats in right field and do pretty well, Beltran is a stud in center, and I don't think most Mets fans would mind Chavez getting decent burn in left with Alou hurt.

Also, couldn't a return to the White Sox make sense for El Duque? They need another veteran starter, and most people in Chicago love him from his first stint with the '05 club. He could slip into the 5 spot in the rotation, and if he gets hurt or struggles then they could put in Gavin Floyd.

I think there are alot of places that could be good options for Hernandez. I'm very surprised Minaya had trouble moving him.

As for the platoon with Church, that is a very solid idea. Reed plays gold glove caliber D at any position, and he hits lefties extremely well.

I guess Reed would be a decent fit with the Mets, but I don't see it happening. Minaya said that the current Mets team would be the one going into the season. Personally, I would like to see El Duque traded. Any ideas of what the Mets would get for him, and from which team?

Do the Mets need any major league relievers?

Now that they've opened (our) wallets for Johan, they should just finish the job and pick up an innings-eater like Lohse. But at the same time, they should tell Pelfrey he will pitch a full year in AAA, with no chance of being recalled. He will be the new stud next year. He's had very little time pitching at all in the minors. It's really crucial he stay on a rotation and get his work in. Sitting around as a 5th starter would be a waste. Just my .02

Unless it's a very good reliever, which we wouldn't get for Duque, Mets don't really need him. Mets have a lot of average-potentially above average relievers.

Personally, I think Pelf should be the #5. He's ready.

Pelfrey may be ready to be a #5 starter. So is Lohse. That's not what the Mets drafted Pelfrey for in round one. I think he needs a full year of seasoning eating crabcakes instead of pitching under the microscope in NYC. And the Mets can actually afford that luxury this year. I just wish they'd do it right for once.

Well theres Jason Frasor or maybe Brian Tallet available. They would both fit in, but probably aren't difference makers in the Mets' pen.

Church is not a platoon player. He hits lefties just as well as Griffey hit lefties over the last three years.

'07 was a bit off for him against lefties, but give him a shot. He'll do well.

I'll repeat: agree that they need Loshe(and have been saying this since the Silva/Loshe "battle")even on a 2yr deal.
