« Marlins Looking For A Starter? | Main | Inge Unlikely For Dodgers »
I mentioned on Monday that Cards ace Adam Wainwright seemed a prime candidate for an extension. Today, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says a contract is done, pending a physical. According to Goold:
The guaranteed part of the new contract is four years and expected to be worth around $15 million, and it will buy out Wainwright’s arbitration years, through 2011. The deal has an option that would cover the first two years of his free agency, sources said.
MLB.com's Matthew Leach writes that Wainwright's $448K renewal for '08 will be overwritten and is one of the four guaranteed years of the deal. As such this would be in line with other young starter deals. And not all of the others got the third arb year guaranteed so Wainwright's agent did well there.

This is a good signing. Wainwright is young and a very good pitcher. He has a chance to be an ace of the club in years to come. Just think of which team he was on. The Cardinals traded for him from Atlanta in the JD Drew trade. It is a better trade for the Cardinals because of not only Wainwright, but they also got Ray King, who help the bullpen for a few years and Jason Marquis, who was a starter, but did not listen to anyone, like that is what the Cubs know now.

goold explains it in the blurb you quoted - the four years start in 2008 and end in 2011, with either two 1-year or 1 2-year option to cover 2012 and 2013, his first two years of free agency.

gah stupid enter button. so essentially, the $15 million is the three arb years plus this season, which is around your estimate.

Goold doesnt say anything about 2008 being overwritten, but that's the only thing that makes sense.

Good signing. They might as well use that money (they are raising ticket prices!!) on something decent. Izturis just wasnt' doing it. They are trying to win, just not this year.

whats up adunc. dont worry about ticket prices. ebay is the place to buy. awesome signing. happy day. weve got wainwright, pujols, carp, and molina signed for the next 4 years. the future is good in st louis. gotta love the two team option years as well. no matter how much they r for it gives the team the control. 08 is still lost but the future is bright. go cards!!!!!!

The Braves and John Schuerholz would like a mulligan on that trade.

Great move by the Cardinals. Within 4 years Wainwright will be one of the best SP in the NL. I agree with the previous opinion concerning the Braves' trade of him.

I don't know how pretty that Carpenter deal really is...he may never be the same. This is a great deal though, and a good signing.
