Cubs Never Called Torii

I don't have enough for an odds and ends, so this little tidbit gets its own post today.  Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times learned that the Cubs never put in a call to Torii Hunter's agent this winter before he signed with the Angels.  Torii's friend Derrek Lee found this shocking; he could have facilitated some talks. Hunter grew up a Cubs fan because of WGN, like many people outside of Illinois.

The Cubs don't quite seem sold on Felix Pie as their center fielder, given their interest in Marlon Byrd earlier this year.  He's had about 200 plate appearances worth of growing pains, and the Cubs apparently want more immediate production.  PECOTA projects a robust .291/.344/.480 line from the 23 year-old this year.

Fine. But Pie is 23. It's time to pick up a CF: Crisp, Johnson, Byrd, Lofton, Willits, or Anderson. We need a true backup/platoon partner.

By the way, the bigger headline is: "Cubs never called Taguchi."

by all means, take Willits.

we'll trade him for some rat traps.
(we need 'em for the concession stands lol)

I thought he was a Cardinals fan growing up? That's what was reported before, anyway. I suppose when he's interviewed by the Tampa Tribune next week he'll claim that he was actually a Rays fan.

Crisp for Wuertz and Castillo?

1. Tori Hunter said during Twins series vs. the Cubs last season that he was not interested in signing with the Cubs as a free agent because of the brick wall and the high fence.

2. Another right handed hitter who was asking for at least $16m/yr and who strikes out a lot and doesn't walk wasn't high on the list.

3. Tori is a hypocrite who, according to WSCR AM 670 in Chicago, he had a verbal agreement to sign with the White Sox and backed out at the last minute to sign with the Angels. No wonder Kenny Williams and the White Sox claimed they really thought he was going to sign with them.

4. Fukudome is a better signing for less money. He's a high obp guy, a lefty batter, plays a much needed position extremely well, and plays fundamentals well. It's also time to find out if Pie can cut it or not. Blocking Pie before he's had a real opportunity with another bad contract would have been dumb.

Good stuff hemingways. I dont think it is a bad thing at all that they had no interest. They spent enough money last year, and they dont need Hunter. If it was Ichiro who was a FA and they didnt put in a call, then that would be sort of strange. Hunter is overated.

u gotta love it when a guy gets 4 years 48 million without ever playing in the states and someone says its a good signing. who r u miss cleo? i see the cubs firsthand and they have a ton of young talent. their problem is they dont want to develop any of it. that marmol guy is absolutely the real deal and pie looks very good. murton could be decent as well. the cubs think that spending money like idiots is the way to go. no matter whose in center they should win the division so why not go with pie. im telling u guys these bad contracts are going to catch up with them in a couple years.

Joel The problem isn't that the Cubs aren't willing to develop talent. It's that they need to win NOW to keep Hendry's job. Strange as it is if I'm doing a questionable job my boss won't throw tons of money at me to spend. They did it and now Hendry has saddled the new owner with at least one overpriced backloaded contract. DLee and Aram are backloaded also, but they were ONLY for 5 years.

joelcards, what talent do they refuse to develop. Isn't Marmol developing into their future closer? Isn't Soto developing into the catcher of the future? Aren't they giving Theriot a shot at shortstop?

One reason that Hunter wasn't on their radar was because they are developing Pie for center field. Hemmingway is correct about the other reason. Hunter was on record saying he would never play in Wrigley because of the brick wall and because he couldn't take homers away from opponents.

Tori Hunter best years are behind him! As far as Felix Pie goes they should have traded him three years ago along with Prior, when we coud have gotten Eric Bedard. PIE SUCKS!!!!!!! Sam Fuld is much better than Pie, he works the count takes a walk, pretty much what a guy with speed should be doin.... Ill say it again PIE SUCKS!!!! HE IS A 4AAA PLAYER . He cant hit major league pitching!!! I hope you read this PIE!!!!

by all means, take Willits.
we'll trade him for some rat traps.
(we need 'em for the concession stands lol)

Hahaha! Perfectly said!!!

Anyway, you cant sign Hunter if you are the Cubs unless you trade Pie. Pie needs to be given a shot at the MLs or sent somewhere to get that shot. We see prospects fail all the time because they never got a real shot, and he seems to be fitting this bill right now himself.

The Cubs just need to get a back-up CF, a Vet that wont provide the rookie-mistakes that a contender can not afford to have off the bench when the starter is the same risk. If Pie does struggle, they can send him down or give him time off with the Vet filling in. That’s the way you have to go about it really, it’s the best for today and tomorrow and a Hunter type signing would have been as bad as the Hunter signing in Ana (where a loss of chances is felt on the prospects in OF/1B/DH and even a trickle down on the MI/3B guys) or Jones in LA (where Ethier/Kemp/Young are most notable stunted)

If Torii had joined the cubs you guys would have praised him, so why are you talking crap about him now...?

Torii is one of the best center feilder, a 30 Hr/ 100 rbi player.

Torri Hunter is a career .991 Feilding %

had like 20 sb.

I want to see Pie hit 15 homers in a year.

until that fukdomie guy can prove he can hit in mlb, dont compare him to hunter.

Nice point about Pie, Dark. The question is how do you get a solid vet who's good enough to play everyday when called on -- yet is willing to take a backup role initially, maybe permanently, to an unproven rookie? We know that Crisp doesn't want to do it. Hendry's got his work cut out for him there.

Pie has to have that shot...I agree with Dark. Please take note everyone, write that down!

Hendry would have been a FOOL had he signed Hunter. Pie will probably be a better defender than Hunter this year defensively, he will probably hit 15 HR, and hunter doesn't deserve 15 mil a year, let alone 17 or 18. He had a career year, he won't be doing that for the life of that contract.

Hmmm...Pie, who *could* end up being a terrific 5 tool player for the league minimum under control for 5 years, or Hunter, who is right handed, exiting his prime, and would cost 18 mil a year??? That would make absolutely no sense, and Hendry would have been a fool to even give him the time of day, especially after talking about Wrigley like its the worst place to play in the world. Sorry, but Babe Ruth never played a world series in your place buddy.

Also, as far as the young guys that are developing FOR the Cubs, and contributed last year...

1. Pie
2. Soto
3. Theriot
4. Fontenot (even though he isn't good
5. Cedeno had a full season, but was rushed.

The Cubs will be an average team if the first 3 don't develop, and be a great team if the first two hit their potential. We will see, but don't knock them, because in the market this year, Hendry could have easily pulled the trigger on someone like Andruw but decided to let Pie develop...which I think will pay off in a HUGE way, not to mention financially.

and if Tori would have joined the Cubs with that contract...I would not have praised him. I would have vomited.

And maybe now you understand why I (and a few others) have stressed the value (mainly because of scarcity) of a guy like Payton. Payton might not be great, but he is very capable of providing LgAvg-ish numbers from a back-up (and of course emergency starter) for CF ~ and its why more than a few people said that Balt probably doesn’t want to just dump him.

The other options seem to be M.Byrd, and we know those demands are high in return. Maybe if you want to meet the return demands Boston seems to have you can have Coco. Luis Gonzalez (But LH…) and Kenny Lofton (But LH…) might be avail on the 40+ scene (I don’t think Gonzo signed yet). Or we might have Erstad (but LH…) on the “plays like 40+” scene ~ but its possible he tacked on somewhere already, not 100% on him either. Who else is there really? I had mentioned that Choo (But LH…) is an extremely advanced fielder with plus hitting possibilities who would probably fit the bill better than some other easily avail options, but he is off TJ surgery… Maybe Dave Roberts (But LH…), but that’s a pretty bad contract to have to eat to find your target. Kotsay (but LH…) would have worked, but he’s in Atl now. Too bad there was bad blood between the team and Corey (but LH…) Its why I mentioned that, in hindsight, the dealing of J.Jones (But LH…) kinda sucks ~ these guys aren’t that easy to find, nor cheap when you do!

Honestly, that’s a ton of names, but all are either not avail, 40+, or LH (or all of the above in some cases). The only three possibilities I really see that fit the situation perfectly are Byrd, Payton and Crisp, everyone else is out of the question or not an ideal because they are LH &/OR decrepit… Bit the bullet, pay up for Roberts + Payton and just be done with it, its by far the best option you got and you can trade Murton to recoup some value.

"The only three possibilities I really see that fit the situation perfectly are Byrd, Payton and Crisp"

...Should say that there might be more, I very well could have missed a couple guys who might be able to do it. I cant imagine too many more though, so the pickings look pretty slim...

alright guys first signing players to bad contracts because hendry needs to keep his job is not a good reason. maybe true but not a good reason. on the cubs young talent, i was mainly referring to the pitching. yes they are keeping soto and theriot but if marmols the closer why resign wood? marmol is ready to close or start now, no question. he is a future star. why sign lieber? they have marshall who is big league ready and a good number of good young guys in triple a. i know the cubs see that they have a chance to win the division but seriously they would win the division without lieber, wood, marquis, or fukudome. thats almost 30 million in salary. not to mention they are still going after roberts. once again when the cardinals had that window of opportunity they spent money but they spent it wisely. heck they got lucky with ted lilly. he had a career year and im still not sure that was a good signing. zambrano is very good but hes one episode away from the halfway house. ill say it one more time, these contracts will catch up with them very soon, maybe even by next year.

Joel, maybe not a good reason to you, or the cub fan base, but to Hendry indeed it is. I feel like if the Mets didnt collapse and Omardidnt feel like his job was on the line Johan is wearing pinstripes right now, no doubt. Gm's do things to save their jobs, and how can you blame them? When they feel like they are going to get canned, why should they care about the young guys who will help the team in 4 years? There are some cases where a guy is fired, like DePo, and then a cuople of years later everybody realizes what a fantastic job he actually did loading that team up with the best young talent. You also are not saying anything enlighteing by telling us the Cubs will pay for those bad contracts at some point. Everybody and their mother has known that since last year when they spent like 86 trillion over the winter. A GM that feels like he may lose his job can be either a very nice situation, where the fire up the guys ass helps him to get his act together and straighten things out. Or you might have a GM who fears for his job and then trades Kazmir for
Zambrano, so it works both ways. Either way, GM's who feel like they may be fired are in a tricky situation. You know if you trade your young talent for vets, you will be ripped in a couple of years for it, though it may save you job and utlimately make your job harder in the future for the price of saving it now. You can also try to keep your youn players and hope that they pan out, and even if you lose your job, people will look back and say that he knew what he was doing. It is sort of a catch 22 situation.

That's just it, though. Is Payton really an everyday CF on a championship team? Is he really that valuable if Pie struggles? Is Byrd? Byrd only puts up mediocre numbers when he plays everyday. When he plays part-time, he stinks. And Crisp has already stated in Boston he doesn't want to be a backup, does he come to Chicago to back up Pie? And if Pie does flourish, guys like Payton, Byrd and Crisp become liabilities. The Cubs won't overpay for Payton because it's not such a great insurance policy anyway. If he has to play everyday, the Cubs are probably in trouble. They might just be better off with Pie struggling at the plate but providing defense, arm strength and speed -- none of which Payton has and all of which the Piniella led Cubs value. If Pie stinks, the Cubs probably go out and make a second deal anyway rather than play Payton everyday.

“That's just it, though. Is Payton really an everyday CF on a championship team? Is he really that valuable if Pie struggles? Is Byrd? Byrd only puts up mediocre numbers when he plays everyday.”

Well, yeah in an emergency. Its called having a back-up plan, its not being stuck with Pie. If the depth is Pie/Cedeno/Patterson/Fuld then its really “Pie has to play all year long” because his rookie mistakes and struggles atleast come with upside which may or may not kick in. If Pie is just in a horrible stretch though, you cant put a Patterson or Cedeno type out there with any confidence while you work with Pie, it would be going from a low-point and taking a step down to ideally (but not necessarily) take a small step up when Pie ideally adjusts. Its why teams with a bunch of rookie on the field don’t generally have rookies on the bench, or why teams like Cincy and Florida/Washington employ guys like Hattenberg and Boone

Cedeno\Patterson\Fuld are ALL better than Payton is. Seriously, a negative VORP dark??? He is bad...really bad. Payton is a THROW IN if we include Marquis in a Roberts trade.

If they talk to Crisp, and he is cool with backing up, I say get him.

Adun,

You really should get out of the one-year tunnel here. It was one year, and a projected VORP doesnt really mean much of anything. Cedeno/Patterson/Fuld all might (and should) be better 4 years down the road, but in 2008 they will be prone to growing pains and rookie mistakes which is the last thing you want when you starter is experiencing the same exact things himself. And really its Cedeno which would really be the guy, not Patterson or Fuld because of the 25-man restraints. You really feel better with a rookie-mistake and unproven CF & a middle infielder learning the position going through the same than someone with years of experience and the proven ability to hit LgAvg-ish? Really, its a question with only one answer ~ a team hoping to win has to have someone other than Cedeno as their back-up CFer...

A guy that is projected to be worse than replacement is not good for a winning team. Proven he could be average?? He has proven he is awful, and nowhere close to average and in the decline. The other options are on the rise...its a dumb argument to tell me that its better to have a horrible player out there, and that's exactly what u are doing.

ADun, you really know nothing other than that PECOTA projection, do you? You really no little about Payton at all, and just repeat what PECOTA says… You really have a ‘just throw some guy who doesn’t know how to play the position out there’ mentality, don’t you? You really think the Cubs are better off with 4-5 rookies or youngsters sitting on the bench, don’t you? Whatever…

Than a guy that has a NEGATIVE Vorp that an O's fan even called a "clubhouse cancer?" Nice work Dark, you made another comment worth of a 3 year old. Good job buddy.

By the way, how many questions in a row can a person ask?
