A small note from SI.com's Jon Heyman:
The Mets appear to be looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder to platoon with Ryan Church.
Presumably the need would be for a lefty-mashing, right-handed hitter. Drunk Jays Fans would like a Reed Johnson rumor started. Pretty good fit. Kevin Millar, Jason Michaels, Matt Murton, and Jay Payton seem to make sense as well.

considering the fact millar doesnt play the outfield.. i dont see how he will work.. i think he played left field at some point in his career.. i dont think he has the same jump in his step to pull that one off
Posted by: O's Fan | March 04, 2008 at 01:41 PM
I thought he played left...
Anyway, Matt Murton would be a great fit...and the only reason he isn't a starter is because of a 136 million dollar contract in left field already. Someone could get him very cheap, and even with the numbers that Keith Law expects from him, I don't understand why a GM wouldn't try and pick him up for cheap. I mean, Marlon Byrd and the Rangers say no?

Hard to hate on Reed Johnson; he's got the second-best facial hair on the Jays.
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 01:47 PM
Any thoughts on Juan Rivera? He's practically a 5th outfielder for the Angels and might not cost much. Otherwise, I'd want Matt Murton.

Did I ever mention that I wish we still had Milledge?
Well, maybe the Mets should have looked into getting Mench when they had the chance. I also think they should give Churhc his 500 ABs and see what he can do in what is supposed to be his peak years.
Posted by: coolpapabell | March 04, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Not to harp but Rivera also has played first which would help as a viable backup to Delgado.
Posted by: Jerry | March 04, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Iwould love to move millar over there but what can we get back from the mets that has at least some value? Mets fans any ideas? I would think anderson hernndez and ruben gotay would do it mets are rolling deep in ssand 2b an could sare a couple and that's the o's big hole.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | March 04, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Just get Xavier Nady back.
In 420 career AB's against lefties, he's hitting .320, what's wrong with that?
Bring back X
Posted by: JerryKoosman | March 04, 2008 at 02:00 PM
Rivera would be awesome for the mets but I think the angels would ask for something substantial maybe pelfrey or heilman.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | March 04, 2008 at 02:00 PM
I think the buccos are highr on nady then we think. He's still really cheap and if he finally gets some real consistent at bats I could see a .280 30 homer 100rbi.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | March 04, 2008 at 02:02 PM
Slammin Sammy is a right handed lefty masher who has been linked to Minaya/Mets quite a bit in the past, don't know about recently. Seems like the price would be right.
Posted by: Dave | March 04, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Yeah take Millar. He can play adequately at 1B and RF if need be. He is also a fun guy in the clubhouse. I still remember the Ray Lewis Dance from opening day last season.
And then we can take Murton from the Cubs in the Roberts/Payton deal. Scott and Murton can take turns playing LF and DH.

When my brother brought this idea up last night about Rivera, I thought the Angels might ask a lot too. But really, he's the fifth outfielder.

How could they ask for Pelfrey or Heilman for a 5th outfielder?
The Pirates are high on Nady. He'd be great as Milledge could've been. If Johnson or Murton is cheap-go there I guess.
Posted by: Jerry | March 04, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Ideally it would be someone who can also backup 1B. That really narrows it down.
Nady is my first choice.
Posted by: stellar | March 04, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Church, struggles vs lefties; Murton would be a perfect platoon partner and is easily avail.
With the always-present health issues in Alou and concerns over Delgado though, I would think the Mets could even be thinking a tad higher and pondering a Bay or Ethier type… Shoot, maybe this is even where Mathews ends up…

Nady and Murton interest me the most a Mets fan. It wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to get both. Nady could platoon with Delgado at first, and Murton could platoon with Church in RF. Also, when Alou retires after this season, the Mets could use both Nady and Murton as starters (assuming the Mets don't go after Teixeira or feel they have a better stop-gap for Fernando Martinez).

Sosa maybe?
Posted by: LADFan | March 04, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Randy Winn hit .351/.399/.535 against lefties last year.
I don't know if he would be considered just a platoon player yet, but I'm hoping there's a team out there who wants him because as a Giants fan I'd rather see Davis, Lewis, and Schierholtz get at bats this year.
Posted by: YaSquare | March 04, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Sammy Sosa would be good for 300 AB, and could DH during interleague games.
Posted by: IowaCubs | March 04, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Jonny Gomes?
Posted by: Cork Gaines | March 04, 2008 at 02:50 PM
jerry
Because on any other team he's not a fifth outfielder. 2006 .310/.362/.525 23 hr 85rbi 448 at bats. That's not a fifth outfielder. Garret anderson's option won'tbe picked up and this leaves them with a cheaper better player. Only on a team with four high priced outfielders would this guy be in this position. and he's still only 29 with better years ahead.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | March 04, 2008 at 03:10 PM
Russ Gload? He hit ok against lefties and plays lf and 1b
Posted by: touchmymonkey | March 04, 2008 at 03:14 PM
Who ever brought up Gotay, great idea. He hurt his ankle a few days ago and might be on the shelf for a month, so he will be of little use right now. If healthy, a few teams might bite. I think he could be a decent replacement for Roberts.
Anderson Hernandez is another story. He still can't hit MLB pitching, and now he seems to have lost his ability to hit in the winter league, where he used to tear up and tease us Mets fans. He used to show some gold glove defense, but I think that has worsened recently.
Maybe a combination Jorge Sosa, Show, and Gotay for Millar or anyone else who is a contractual burden to their team that can't play everyday.

Cork-
I know what you're saying but I'm just not sure that if we were to give up say, one of the young middle relievers/sosa/showenweis and maybe an extra young outfielder that the angels could say a harsh no. I understand they can say no, but it just seems like a waste to keep a guy around that even next year you might not have full time work for.
Next year w/o anderson- vlad-hunter-matthews-willits
@ 1st- Kotchman
So he can platoon with Kotchman and 4 other starters 3 of which make much more money.
Again, I dont think it'll happen. But to think that they would have to ask for Heilman or Pelfrey for an extra outfielder is a little much imho.
Posted by: Jerry | March 04, 2008 at 03:46 PM
The Tigers need to move someone and Marcus Thames would be a great fit for this trade.

"Next year w/o anderson- vlad-hunter-matthews-willits @ 1st- Kotchman

...I think Willits is more than likely the odd-man out though. Its my understanding he doesnt bring much to the table, and his longterm value is minimal. I mean, let us not forget the .252/.349/.293 with 9SB (in 222AB) line when his BAbip stabilized in the second half...
2009 will see (between 1B/OF/DH) Vlad (if resigned) / Mathews (if not traded) / Hunter (if healthy) / Kotchman (if healthy) / Morales (if able to produce in majors) / Rivera. He is almost the most sound of the bunch, I think its hard for the Angels to deal him really…
Oh and Schoeneweis? Been there, done that and dealt him so he could make his money elseware… He’s an interesting cat though; he is making millions as a random middle reliever despite the fact that he has only had one real positive season in his entire career. Its strange…

Sosa had 21 Home runs and 92rbi last year. and hit .328 with a .613 slugging percentage vs Left handed pitchers. He is the best fit for the mets. and is much less of a spectacle them most people probably think. he had the quietest 92rbi season last year.
Posted by: fatnickshow | March 04, 2008 at 04:20 PM
Sosa's side of the platoon looks great if they only play him away games, during the day, against lefties and on turf.
Posted by: Dave | March 04, 2008 at 04:28 PM
"and is much less of a spectacle them most people probably think"
Had teammates bash in his rap\salsa music playing on his boombox that he insisted on having in the locker room. He is a huge spectacle.

Rivera would be great for the Mets. Really don't have any idea what the Angels would ask for though. The guy has great skills and if given a shot to be a full-time player he will deliver. Unfortunately, it's a numbers game in the Angel outfield and Rivera is the odd man out.
Posted by: bjsguess | March 04, 2008 at 05:52 PM
A few ideas that I think make the most sense would be Matt Murton and I actually like the idea of Juan Rivera. Although the Cubs would probably want someone of decent value for Murton, ie Aaron Heilman or something, and the Angels would probably want something of decent value as well. Acquiring a quality option would cost the Mets something decent
Posted by: scribbletone | March 04, 2008 at 05:57 PM
The thing about Sosa for me is that he's really old. Also not a good solution to the OF when Alou goes finally.
As much as I like Rivera, probably not I guess. I'd go for Murton or Millar.
Posted by: Jerry | March 04, 2008 at 06:25 PM
The Pirates don't really seem that high on Nady. They've talked about dealing him during this past offseason and I even read where they considered non-tendering him. They have replacements (Doumit/Pearce) and he's truly a platoon outfielder.
I suggested a swap of "hold your nose" contracts in a past thread; Matt Morris and Xavier Nady for Sosa, Schonweis and cash. Pittsburgh comes out ahead financially and the Mets get a reasonable #5 hurler and the backup 1b/OF they desire.
I like the Baltimore fit as well. Either Millar or Aubrey Huff fit the 1b/OF bit and Baltimore would clearly love to dump their contracts. I bet the O's would take Gotay alone for one of those, just to be rid of their contracts.
