« Three CF Options For Cubs | Main | Nationals Release John Patterson »
LEN3 of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Twins have been talking extension all day with Joe Nathan's agent. Neal suggests that the stalemate between the two parties has been broken and a deal may be close.
Since Nathan doesn't want to give a discount, he may want something similar to Mariano Rivera's three-year, $45MM deal.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, Nathan is a great player, and I appreciate that he truly wants to remain a Twin. But if Santana wasn't worth a heavy contract, I don't see how a 33 yr old closer is, either. Consider also that relief pitching is one of the Twins' strengths; if we can afford to give up anyone, it's a relief pitcher.

i agree. neshek looks like a closer to me. also what is the point of having a good closer if the rest of your team isnt very good? good closers r only worth the big money on playoff teams which the twins certainly r not.

...yet. And by the time they are, Nathan probably won't be the guy they want at the end of games. That'll be Neshek, Crain, or somebody else. So, yeah, if I were the Twins I'd not extend him, wait for Tom Gordon's arm to fall off, then trade him for another load.

I love Nathan. But given the Twins situation they would be much better off either trading him now OR signing him to a reasonable contract and then trading him.
If he does a 3/45 the guy will have very little trade value unless a team is in dire straits during the season. Otherwise teams will just wait until FA and sign K-Rod or someone else that is similar.

Im gonna say it !
I think the Twins should trade Nathan to the Cubs ! Especially since Kerry wood showing initial signs of his gradual decent into becomming a paralypian.

The Twins are probably one, maybe two years from competing. Nathan is locked up for this year at 8 million?
The Twins have a line up that should be able to score a lot more runs than last year, having Neshek for the 8th and Nathan for the 9th basically shortens the games to 7 inning games. IF the Twins can get decent quality starts from the likes of Bonser, Slowey, Liriano, etc. The Twins should be able finish over .500, which would be pretty good considering they lost the game's top pitcher.
