« Phils Talking To Giants, Reds About Helms? | Main | Freddy Guzman Clears Waivers »
30 year-old reliever Chris Reitsma is on a minor league contract with the Mariners, and they don't feel he's ready for the big league roster quite yet. John Hickey says Reitsma can retire, go to the minors as requested, or ask the Mariners for his release (they'd have no obligation to grant it). Reitsma has yet to throw on back-to-back days, and he doesn't offer the upside of Mark Lowe.
Reitsma had a fifth elbow surgery in July of '07. The Mariners declined his $2.7MM option for '08 but re-signed him to a minor league deal. He's healthy now, but hasn't been useful since '05.

He's useful for blowing saves.

I had no idea he was still playing! It might be time for him to start thinking about a new career. Sorry to say he never really could use what was once considered a plus changeup in any way effectively.

To quote Reitsma himself: "I'm 29 and have a 70 year-old elbow." Even duct tape wears out eventually.

Reitsma has got to be toast. Saw him pitch this spring and he looked very mediocre. That and given the fact he has had like 33 elbow surgeries, he is likely toast unless he was to hang out in AAA ball. He's a good guy so I hope something works out for him.

Last thing I can remember about Reitsma is watching him blow TONS of late inning leads in ATL. Just retire. Good riddance.
