Rumor king Ken Rosenthal has the latest at FOXSports.com.
- Looks like the Padres will give near-regular playing time to Jody Gerut, at least until Jim Edmonds returns. If Gerut performs, Kevin Towers may be able to stop his outfielder search. Still, Rosenthal notes the Padres' interest in Seattle's Jeremy Reed. Reed has two options left, by the way.
- Rosenthal names three Boston players who are out of options and probably available for little: David Aardsma, Bryan Corey, and Kyle Snyder. The O's are known to be eyeing Corey. You can check out our running out of options list here.
- The A's wanted spring sensation/top pitching prospect Johnny Cueto from the Reds for Joe Blanton - no deal.
the reds r making good decisions and, as much as i dont like it, r really headed in the right direction. they r getting the pitching and with that ballpark they will find offense. with that park u get pitchers from other teams who havent had their confidence destroyed and with the hitters just call guys up. the reds r one to watch, really more next year than this.

At least one of Aardsma, Corey and Snyder will make the Red Sox opening day roster (probably Snyder, he was solid last year and can be used as a long man or to spot start). I expect Corey will be traded, though. Aardsma, I'm not sure; he might edge out Javier Lopez for the last bullpen spot.

Hard to believe Aardsma could be joining his 5th organization in 4 years, only 5 years removed from being a 1st-round pick. If he ever gets a real chance somewhere he's going to be pretty damn good.

Aardsma, Corey and Snyder are all on the 30 man roster allowed for the Japan series. Its the regular 25 man roster, 2 extra eligibles, and 3 ineligible players. They reduce to 25 on April 1st when the season resumes in Oakland.

Aardsma got a pretty good look with the White Sox last year and a smaller look the year before with the Cubs. Altogether I'd consider it a pretty good look.
He has a 100mph fastball which makes him an intriguing pick-up for any team, but at this point he's shown no evidence of any ability to command even that pitch, and no real second pitch either. He's probably worth some team taking a chance on, but I wouldn't bet too much on him figuring it out. Five years is a long time to not figure out how to throw the ball over home plate, and most teams in contention can't afford to give him a roster spot while he tries to figure it out.

Good for Jody! I hope he’s chilled his attitude a bit in the last couple years and actually takes advantage of the second chance he is getting.
Still got a game-used/signed Bat, Batting-Glove and Hat from the guy on my wall ~ maybe I’ll have to make it down to a couple early Pads games and see if I can get my Bobble autoed as well :)

Think asm is right about PTBNL for Corey... Doesn't sound like he's got a ton of value, though I'll admit I don't know a ton about him.
As far as Jon B's 'review' of Aardsma, it sounds like HE'D actually be a pretty good fit with Baltimore. Obviously he's got talent in there somewhere and for as bad as the Orioles are going to be, it couldn't hurt to give him a legit shot. As long as the cost isn't too high (from the sound of things, it wouldn't be), why not give him a chance. What's the worst that could happen. We give up twenty runs! Oh yeah, we ALREADY DID THAT!

It's hard to believe Aardsma is in this position after watching him early last season. In April he got a lot of appearances against the Indians and he looked absolutely nasty... Actually, if you look at his April numbers in general, they are nasty: 2-0, 15.2 IP, 8H, 23 K, 1.72 ERA, .89 WHIP, .154 BAA
I wouldn't be shocked if anyone took a chance on this kid.

Aardsma isn't going anywhere. He's had a strong spring and has the most upside of any of the Red Sox pitchers that are out of options.

I agree with both the last 2 comments. GoTribe, that's exactly what I mean -- he's been extremely impressive at times. Jon B, I'm aware of his stint with the White Sox last season, but after about a month or so of total domination, it seemed to me that at the first appearance of problems (ie as soon as he started walking guys), he was basically kicked to the curb. Which didn't make any sense to me considering some of the other guys in the CWS' pen that stuck around.
I agree with TNS that he's the one of that group the Red Sox are most likely to keep. I think Corey can be had for a song, and the same would be true of Snyder if anyone was interested.

I got...$8.22, some old baseball cards and a Bon Jovi/Poison/Def Leopard mix tape from '87. My Legion team could use a closer.
