San Diego: Pitchers' Haven

Tom Krasovic pens an interesting article today on the pitchers' haven that is San Diego.  Free agent pitchers love signing with the Padres.  Why?

  • Petco is tough on offense.  According to the Bill James Handbook, the park has reduced runs by 19% over the last couple of seasons.
  • The weather is fantastic - no 35 degree Chicago Opening Days.
  • Manager Bud Black was a pitcher, as was GM Kevin Towers.
  • Krasovic cites Mark Prior and Randy Wolf as two pitchers who spurned bigger offers to pitch in San Diego.

I might be colder then 35 Degrees on opening at Wrigley Field this year...I will be there though...I would never miss an opening day for anything...

Wow, Petco and Citizens Bank Park in Philly are almost replicas. If you're going to copy a stadium, i'm glad philly chose San Deigo, i love CBP and i've heard all good things about Petco.

I'd much rather pitch in Wrigley.

I wouldn't want Californians as fans.

San Diego is a pretty nice area. The rest of CA, meh.

Still, I project Prior to give up a load of runs before going down with an arm injury.

I think that Prior will be put into the closers role. Trevor time has to be the greatest entrance-into-a-game in sports history. Very intimidating to opposing players.

Heath Bell: you deserve to be the highest paid middle reliever in MLB.

So Petco is a pitchers park and SD has good weather. Slow news day?

Is it such a fantasy to want the Padres' news on this site to be about getting a position player, like say an outfielder, who gets on base and drives in runs?

fitz, your an idiot. Dissing san diego fans? We are the most laid back fans around, which is another reason why pitchers can turn their careers around here. My father went to U of C for undergrad and med school and came out here for residency. Getting away from the slums where he would get robbed and wind so cold it would break your face to beautiful 75 degree san diego. Good luck having a payroll above $100 mil this year and $125 mil in the near future just to miss the playoffs.
