« Snyder Accepts Minor League Assignment | Main | Odds and Ends: Schilling, Piazza, Howard »
Tom Haudricourt outlines the Brewers' roster crunch - something has to give this weekend to make room for Yovani Gallardo. The best solution may be to risk losing Seth McClung on waivers while moving Dave Bush to the bullpen. But trading Bush has to be considered.
Bush, 28, has been knocked around in two starts this year. He doesn't even have his customary strong K/BB (last year his ratio was an impressive 3.0 despite a 5.12 ERA). If nothing else, Bush is an innings eater with strong command. He earns $2.55MM this year and is under team control through 2010. I previously mentioned the Braves and Tigers as teams in need of starting pitching. The Marlins could also use help.

Since when do the Tigers need starting pitching? Dontrelle is hurt right now, but may only miss one start. Dave Bush is not better than any pitcher on the Tigers' current roster.

With Granderson hurt and Kotsay coming back to earth I would think that the Red Sox could trade Crisp and a pitcher (Snyder etc.) to one of these two teams and get a prospect or two? If indeed they are looking for starters . . .

Since 2 seasons ago.

Since Granderson is coming back within a week or two, I'm pretty sure we don't need to give up more prospects for Crisp.

The Tigers had plenty of pitching last year, with Verlander, Bonderman, Robertson, Rogers after he came back, Andrew Miller, Jair Jurrjens, Vasquez... even Miner helped out.

The Tigers lack any kind of rotation depth despite plenty of injury risk. Bush could be a good swingman for them, as could Kyle Snyder (in whom they have interest).

As a Tigers fan, I'd like Bush at the back end of the rotation...no idea what the Tigs would have to give up...no clue how much interest is out for for a player like Clevlen, probably zero.

Tigers do need SP help. Rogers is done for, Willis is no good, and even though Bonderman has sick stuff, he never puts it all together. Detroit could definitely use Bush.
I don't see Melvin trading Bush to ATL, however, as the Braves are expected to be in the playoff race in the NL along with the Brew Crew.
Most likely scenario in my eyes is trying to pass McClung through waivers, and even if he gets claimed, I wouldn't view it as a very big loss.

It seems obvious that the Phillies need starting help as much if not more than anyone. They're #4/#5 slots are a wasteland.

I could definately see the Phillies getting in on Bush. Behind Hamels, Myers and Kendrick, they really have nothing truly effective. Plus, they could net Bush without having to give up either of their two top prospects, Carrasco or Cardenas.
I could see maybe Dave Bush for Jason Jaramillo and Drew Carpenter. The Brewers don't have much in the way of young catching, so they would likely persue either Jaramillo or Marson. They could look into the Phillies' other good young pitchers, Savery, Outman and Drabek, but I doubt that Gillick would be willing to move both one of those pitchers and a catcher. Melvin could try and get away with Drabek and Jaramillo but it'd be some tough bargaining. But I definately see Philly as a prime option.
I don't quite see why the Braves would make a deal though. Their top three spots are filled by Smoltz, Hudson and Glavine, and Jurrjens and James are good young back of the rotation starters. And that doesn't include what Mike Hampton could potentially bring. So unless they could get him for cheap, I don't think they'd have the motivation to move a good prospect for Bush.

I thought that Parra would be sent down to make way for Gallardo... the idea was to limit Mannys' innings in triple A until the midpoint of the season and then conceivably make a trade for Bush at the deadline (when he is hopefully pitching a lot better than now). If Yost gives him a decent role, McClung could be a really decent member of the bullpen.

Manny Parra may be too good to be in AAA. Him and Gallardo is a nasty 1-2 punch for the next five years.

The Rangers could always use another coin to throw in the wish fountain, especially seeing as Jason Jennings has turned out to be the 2007 version instead of the 2006 version.

I know that Dave enjoys Milwaukee and the Brewers organization. However, if he were dealt, he'd love to go to Philly. That's his home and he grew up a Phillies fan.

Dontrelle is hurt?
I thought he just stunk. -maybe it's both. Anyone notice his stats have gotten progressively worse each season over the last 4 years?

I believe that is fairly common knowledge at this point.
