Braves Hurting For Pitching

With Tom Glavine ailing and the fifth starter spot an open audition, the Braves are facing a starting pitching shortage.  The bullpen could use a hand as well, but one thing at a time.

Healthy, possibly available free agent starters include Roger Clemens, Russ Ortiz, Horacio Ramirez, Jeff Weaver, and David Wells.  Obviously they all have warts - age, baggage, ineffectiveness.  But if one of them can eat innings at a 4.50 ERA, it might make sense.

How about acquiring a starter via trade?  Here are some names to ponder: Daniel Cabrera, Joe Blanton, Jason Marquis, Matt Morris, Dave Bush, Matt Belisle, Vicente Padilla, Robinson Tejeda, Jeremy Sowers, Kei Igawa, Kyle Snyder, and Kevin Correia.  This list works for other clubs light on pitching, the Tigers for example.

What about Tom Gorzelanny? Reading from recent articles, Pirate's management do not seem so fond of keeping him long-term (like Snell). He could certainly be someone that could be counted on to eat some innings in the backend of the rotation. However, the asking price might be too high even if they do consider shopping him.

Matt Beliese for Brayan Pena seems more and more like a perfect deal as the days go by

Definatly don't see Ortiz or Marquis coming back to ATL.

It was foolish from day one for ATL to think their pitching "depth" would hold up with Smoltz just waiting to break down, Glavine starting to lose his magic and Hampton, well being Hampton. They almost need an arm like Blanton that is young enough to last for a few seasons although trying to acquire such an arm will drain their farm even more.

Well the rotation right now only consists of 3 and a half pitchers: Hudson, Smoltz, Jurrjens and a very tired Bennett. I imagine Jo-Jo will get one of the remaining spots and if he can cut down on his walks, the Braves might make due until either Glavine and/or Hampton are healthy again.

I would not mind seeing them go after Daniel Cabrera, Joe Blanton, Matt Belisle, Robinson Tejeda, Jeremy Sowers, or Kevin Correia. Probably would not have to give up to much for any of them except Blanton. Would love to see Sowers in a Braves uniform.

I think you can take Marquis off that list for the moment, at least until Lilly and Hill get it together, because Marquis has been the cubs third most effective starting pitcher.... gag.

Roger Clemens - not even maybe, way too much baggage and that's not what the Braves need now.

Russ Ortiz & Horacio Ramirez - been there, done that.

I say stick with what they have for a couple/few weeks, for they kept talking about all this pitching depth and let's see if that depth materializes. If it does not, then do something.

Geaux Braves!!

Anyone thought about the flux the Rays will have when Kazmir or Garza come back. There maybe a pitcher or teo that can be bought for a cheap song in this team.
Jason Hammel, JP Howell, and maybe Edwin Jackson if you have the right tools to trade.
The Rays have a huge backload of arms in the minors. Maybe give one of them a chance to hit the big show early with a team on the mend.

Gorzelanny to the Braves so he can eat some innings at the back end of the rotation?? Seriously?? Of course the asking price will be high and thats because he is not a back of the rotation innings eater. Besides Hudson, he will have as good or better of a year than any of your current grandpa pitchers. And i would think he'll be pretty close to Hudson as well.

I think it's time for Wren to pick up that phone and place a call to a one Mr.B Beane.

Im sure he would be willing to trade them a great #3 pitcher and a closer (Street, or Embree) ... at a price !

That would solve their immediate problems ! Place that call Wren

Sorry to break it to you Sobesman, but Gorzelanny is not a frontline calibur pitcher, atleast not on any other team besides the Pirates. #1 or 2 type pitchers do not put up WHIPs in the 1.40s like Tommy did in '07. He's an innings eater and not much else imo, which is probably why the Pirates management hasn't even signed him to an extension like they did with Snell.

where do you read that the braves are hurting for starting pitching? smoltz, hudson, glavine, jurrjens, james, hampton, bennett. just because it's the first 2 weeks of the season and there are inury concerns doesnt mean we will go looking for another starter to fill the gap between now and 2 weeks from now. that just doesnt make sense. glavine has never spent time on the dl, james will get back his from soon, and until then the braves will probably go with a 4 man rotation. making a trade or a big signing would be a panic move and a stupid decision for frank wren.

lots of typos. sorry.

I don't think the Braves will go out and trade for a starter. They brought a huge pile of guys into Spring Training, and last I checked, Bennett, Reyes, James, and Carlyle are all still available. Glavine won't stay hurt for long (he's never even been on the DL. Ever.), and they went into the season knowing Hampton was a wildcard. They entered the year with the depth to handle this situation.

I think Cabrera can turn it around with the help of some experienced pitching in Atlanta. What advice can Daniel get in Baltimore? None really. Blanton is another option and thankfully so seeing as he is off to a disappointing start. Beane also loves getting the raw end of the deal with the Braves so it's a likely scenario it will happen again.

The Cardinals already have a surplus with Anthony Reyes and Brad Thompson in the bullpen. Its going to get worse in 3-4 weeks when Mulder and Clement possibly push Wellemeyer and Looper to the 'pen. They'll trade just about anyone of these guys and none will cost too much.

That number may be high for a top calibur pitcher, but keep in mine it was his first full season starting in the bigs. With experience he should be able to improve that number, if he doesn't then you would be right. But, I would think that the number has a better chance of decreasing instead of increasing. And I think that the new front office will give him a chance to do it in a pirate uniform before trading him so quickly. If he can earn it, the extension will come.

deeco, I think the Cardinals (if they're smart) put together a package that nets them Lillibridge.

I'd think Kyle Lohse, Anthony Reyes and maybe 1B Mark Hamilton would be a decent bounty for Lillibridge and perhaps Cory Rasmus (there must be some appeal to the Cardinals to have both Rasmus brothers potentially playing in St. Louis). St. Louis has several players who could be mixed and matched to make a deal work (Duncan, Looper, Schumaker, etc.).

Atlanta can't possibily look forward to having a rotation almost entirely made up of senior citizens and injury question marks for a full 162 games

Of all the guys that are listed, I think that Daniel Cabrera and/or Anthony Reyes make the most sense for the Braves.

Cabrera and Reyes both are really talented, and Atlanta has proven to be a place where some pitchers manage to put it all together. If one of those guys put it all together he'd be at least a good 3 and possibly way better.

The Orioles would immediately ask for Brent Lillibridge, I presume, considering their complete lack of a long term option at short. With Lillibridge, they'd have exactly that. On top of Lillibridge, maybe a decent young guy like Reyes or Rohrbrough to even it out. That should get it done.

With Reyes, I could once again see the Cards going after Lillibridge. Lillibridge is probably more valuable than Reyes though, so maybe the Cardinals could include Ludwick. The Braves wanted a good bat off the bench, and Ludwick is that. If the Braves could get Reyes and Ludwick for Lillibridge, I think they'd have to consider doing that.

And also, while Tom Gorzelanny was not a top of the rotation starter in 2007, he was at least a good #3, and it was during his age 24-25 season. He's still pretty young and has some projection left, so he's fully capable of becoming a top of the rotation starter, possibly even starting this year. He didn't exactly dominate hitters last year, but he proved he can be durable, and at the very least he's a good #3 starter, like a better version of Joe Blanton.

Reyes and Cabrera are projects, and the Braves don't want or need that right now. I think they could get similar production from Jo Jo Reyes--some K's, a few control problems, and durability.

We still have Smoltz, Hudson, Jurrjens and Bennett to hold down the fort, plus Reyes and Morton doing well in AAA if needed. Glavine may be fine after we skip a start and Hampton should be coming off the DL soon. No need to sign, or trade for, a starter in a panic. I think acquiring a reliever is much more likely...

"Reyes and Cabrera are projects, and the Braves don't want or need that right now"

You wouldn't consider young guys like Jurrjens and James, or rehab guys like Hampton to be projects?

In the NL even if Cabrera struggled he'd put up a 4.50 ERA

Scribbletone

If you think Jurrjens is a project then you have not seen that kid pitch at all. Hampton is also not a project, he was lights out in ST and just needs to be able to stay healthy, he is only a project if you are a trainer, haha

Take that headline and underscore it. Moylan's on the DL now with a bad elbow. DOB of the AJC says it could be serious.

So now the rotation's thin and the bullpen is anchored by Manny Acosta, Will Ohman and Blaine Boyer.

Yikes.

I would imagine FW's phone line is buzzing (Brayan Pena, anyone?) but the team is at a bit of a disadvantage right now, wouldn't you say?
