Odds And Ends: Lowry, Street, Farnsworth, Roberts

Just a few loose links for Saturday morning.

  • Billy Beane has talked to Alan Hendricks, agent for closer Huston Street, about an extension. However, they have been informal talks, with no specifics to mention. Don't expect much movement on this front until we get deeper into the season and see where the A's really stand.
  • Brian Roberts is relieved now that the trade rumors are dead. "I know where I'm going to be on a nightly basis now, at least," Roberts said. "It is a relief because I think everybody wants stability in their life, but I understand that doesn't always happen. If it comes up again, I'll deal with it."
  • Brian Sabean talked about the possibility of a six-man rotation once Noah Lowry returns to action in May. The article says that this "ensure that the youngest and most prized starters, Cain and Lincecum, are not overtaxed in a rebuilding season." But you still need them to get their innings in. Lincecum, for instance, pitched 177.1 innings last year. You'd like to get him to 200 this year, which would be difficult in a six-man rotation environment.
  • It looks like Kyle Farnsworth will be suspended for throwing at Manny Ramirez the other night. I know it's not a transaction rumor. But won't punishing retaliation just mean more preemptive aggression?

what exactly was Farnsworth supposedly retaliating against? someone getting hit two days before? it was because manny hit two homeruns that day. suspension deserved.

I was watching that game and there was simply no reason to throw at Manny. He didn't even gloat after the 2 homeruns... he was just throwing at him four hitting two homeruns. It just shows how unclassy Farnsworth is.

Not sure I want Lincecum or any Giants starter throwing 200 innings. 180 seems just fine for a young arm.

Surprisingly good news for Jonathon Sanchez. Perhaps they're going to give him a real shot at starting this year?

Unclassy is not a word.

And someone didn't get hit two nights before -- it was a two-game series, so obviously it was the night before, smart guy. A-Rod hits a home run and gets drilled -- and I mean drilled -- with a fastball high on his back. The next night Manny hits two home runs and gets a ball thrown behind him. So what's the big deal? A-Rod actually got hit -- Manny did not. This is a pointless overreaction.

Going by the 30 inning limit, Lincecum could throw 207 innings and be okay since he threw 177.1 in 2007. He should be fine to throw 200 innings, but if he starts getting tired towards the end of the year, it wouldn't hurt to shut him down in the 190's.

“Surprisingly good news for Jonathon Sanchez. Perhaps they're going to give him a real shot at starting this year?”

…One would hope so ~ this kid could be a stud if they ever stopped screwing with him… I mean, how do they expect him to be good if they dont keep him in one spot/role/location for more than 3 weeks? They already screwed up rushing him, the continued games have only further messed up his career; and if they don’t start giving him a set role with consistent teaching then I hope they trade him to someone who will…

The difference is that Farnsworth threw at the head. I have no complaint if he hits Manny below the shoulders.

While I agree it would be a good idea to get Lincecum up to 200 IP's this season...do you think that would be possible?

While putting a 6th man in the rotation would, pretty much, eliminate that possibility. After watching the guy pitch(cause Im a Giants fan), he doesn't seem to go late in the game, many times, if at all.

I think the main problem w/ him and getting a lot of IP's is that, he's out there to strike 'em out and not to just get an out.

Most of the time I watch him, he's only going 5-6 innings, w/ the exception of today(7), but also it should be noted that he did not strike out as many guys as opposed to his last start, 6 innings-11 K's.

Also, another thing that I think will limit him from getting to the 200 IP plateau is the organization...I think they have stated in the past that they will watch and limit how much he pitches...they even have gone as far as to scratch him when it rained.

So, just my thoughts on the idea of Lincecum even trying to get to 200 innings.

For the geniuses citing Farnsworth trying to take off Manny's head as a retaliation for A-Rod getting hit the night before, Jacoby Ellsbury was hit twice earlier on Thursday when Farnsworth went headhunting and the Sox did not come after Yankee hitters to retaliate. I know it's really convenient to overlook facts and all but the score was beyond settled well before Kyle Farnsworth took the mound if there really was a beaning beef.

What Farnsworth did was intent to injure and was hardly retaliation; he took matters into his own hands. The Yankee fans don't like Farnsworth and his way of getting cheered was trying to take the head off of Manny Ramirez in front of the home fans at Yankee Stadium. In Farnsworth's twisted head, that was an okay thing to do. He should be held accountable for his actions and MLB had to send a message so things like this don't continue to happen and situations don't escalate. Putting careers in jeopardy should not be happening.
