« Rays Notes: Crawford, Baldelli, Wheeler | Main | Tigers Eyeing Chad Cordero? »
Pedro Martinez will have an MRI on his strained hamstring today, so the team should get an idea of how long their #2 starter will be out. We were already talking about the Mets possibly adding a starter before the injury; now the need is pressing.
MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone suggests free agents Claudio Vargas or Woody Williams. Vargas is the most talented free agent pitcher; the group also includes Jeff Weaver and David Wells. Other random available starters I tossed out in my Kelvim Escobar post: Jason Marquis, Matt Morris, Matt Belisle, Byung-Hyun Kim, Horacio Ramirez, Anthony Reyes, and Cliff Lee. The Mets aren't overflowing with trade chips, so signing Vargas makes the most sense.

As a long-time Braves fan, all I can say is....
mwahahahahahaha!!!!!!

Mets get: Cliff Lee
Indians get: David Dellucci taken from them by the Mets too.
Best trade ever.

Typical classy braves fan...maybe you guys will win a game sometime this season so you can laugh again
Posted by: SkiBolton | April 02, 2008 at 08:46 AM
So Bravesfan is that some type of new southern slang that I am not familar with or is that just how you guys talk down there in the nobody gives a crap about our team Atlanta?

San Diego sends Justin Germano and Paul McAnulty to the Mets for Angel Pagan,a very good AA or lower starting pitching prospect and a KT A ball pick.

hahahahah, Ellis. Good one. A good update to the ole "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain" saying!

Best rotation in NL huh? Pitching depth? LOL. Told ya they should've signed Loshe.
Posted by: maximumpotential | April 02, 2008 at 09:39 AM
I knew this would happen. Can't they just plug in El Duque again? I think I read somewhere that El Duque lost out on the 5th spot.
Trade for the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez. Not sure what's left to offer from the Mets prospect list. But at this point SF will take anyone.

Hey what about Lincecum and Cain and pray for rain??

Boomer Wells might be sitting near a telephone and a cold beer
Posted by: Jim T | April 02, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Yeah! I'd love to see the Mets pick up Woody Williams or Horacio Ramirez!
Really though, Vargas is the best option. The rest of those guys would just be batting practice for the Braves and Phillies lineups... even more than Pelfrey.

Right now Boomer Wells probably tips the scales at 400 lbs., gutted and dressed.

As a Braves fan, let it be known that all of us aren't jubilant and excited about Pedro's injury.
Why? Smoltz is on the DL and Hampton could be one stressful movement of the elbow away from landing there, also. We are just as close to being hit with an injury as the Mets are.
Just wanted to let you Mets fans that not all of us Braves fans are bumbling fools.

Stephen Peele...We do appreciate fans like you

Woody Williams?!?!?
Wow, now that's really scraping the vat...talk about bottom-feeding. If a team with the kind of money Minaya has sunk into it has to wind up depending on Woody Williams, it will be a loooooooooooooong final year at Shea for the Mets.

According to Metsblog.com, Pedro's injury may not be as bad as initially feared. There is still a chance he will be DL'ed for precautionary reasons, but Pedro himself said he will wait to see his MRI results before deciding even on that.
Clearly, the Mets dodged a bullet here, but i think they should still sign Claudio Vargas, considering he has won 10+ games each of the last 2 years.

I'm glad that there are is at least one Braves fan without his head in the sand. Laugh as you wish, anyone else, but our rotation and resources(monetary and physical) are just as good as anyone's in our league.
I too think Vargas makes the most sense; short of taking a shot at Jeff Weaver hoping for a St. Louis post season revival.

As a Braves fan, I'm not celebrating Pedro's injury. Just wish some of the Mets fans would have backed off a few notches in the offseason when they crowed as if this year's rotation was as deep and fearsome as in the days Seaver, Koosman, etc.
It does show you how thin pitching is throughout baseball. Consider this, after all. Who opened Nats Stadium for the home team? Odalis Perez? Give me a break. (He pitched well, but still, if he's the anchor of your rotation ...)

I will sleep with the devil himself if the mets take jason marquis from us. come on mets fans, he's pretty good.

metzfan22 - "clearly the Mets dodged a bullet here."
That's a bit presumptuous considering the MRI hasn't even come back yet.
Sorry but if he heard a "pop" like he said he did, you can wave goodbye to Pedro for at least 6 weeks.

Well it's a good thing the Blog sees the results of the MRI before Pedro does.
The Mets should call up Brian Bannister, oh wait, they traded him last season for, oh wait, he's on the DL with Pedro.

Is the time coming for a Jason Marquis/Matt Murton trade..?
Murton was a good fit for this team anyways, considering he would give them a great safety blanket for the inevitable Alou injuries, and he could get some at bats in right with Church as well.
Marquis may not be terribly good, but the Mets are more than capable of affording him, and they appear to need someone who is at least dependable. Marquis may not be better than a 4.45 ERA, but he's still good for 200 innings.
I think that Luis Castillo would be a good idea, because he'd give them a decent leadoff hitter who can hit from both sides of the plate. The Mets already have a leadoff hitter in Reyes anyways.
So while I would like to see something like a Marquis, Murton and Eric Patterson for Castillo trade, I think thats extremely unlikely.
Maybe something like that same package for Aaron Heilman
Posted by: scribbletone | April 02, 2008 at 07:23 PM
that's horrible...all that for a #5 starter? even without Pedro the Mets have the best rotation in their division, and they also have a good bullpen to help it out, so don't worry, there's no pressure :) after all, Hampton was pulled out of his start today due to injury, and Smoltz is on the DL :) now when the braves have a 3 game lead heading towards the trade deadline, that's when we start to worry

bravesfan1981-How's Mike Hampton working out for yah?
