1:42pm: It's done - the Reds have designated Hatteberg for assignment to make room for Bruce.
9:30am: The Reds haven't announced the corresponding move to Jay Bruce's callup yet. John Fay wonders whether they'll opt to designate Scott Hatteberg for assignment, noting his well-diminished role on the team. I speculated back in April that Hatteberg might be a good replacement for Carlos Delgado or complement to Richie Sexson.
Corey Patterson has to be worried as well, since Bruce is expected to take over as the regular center fielder. Patterson is hitting just .201/.242/.354 in 155 plate appearances.

The way I see it the Reds will DFA one of the following.
Patterson--Has been a disaster offensively especially when you consider that most of his production occured the first week of the season. However he does have a glove and some base stealing speed. Along with the largest contract of the three.
Hatteburg--Really makes little sense to have two left handing hitting 1Bs. Hatteburg is inferior to Votto in pretty much every aspect of the game. Basically Hatteburg is a poor man's Votto. He does have value though and could be traded, even without that though he still has some value to the Reds. I can see the Reds cutting ties but there are better DFA options on the roster.
That brings us to Javier Valentin. He serves no purpose on the Reds roster and the Reds are having trouble getting him playing time. He can't really catch, he doesn't really hit, and he's another back up 1B.
Valentin basically brings nothing to the table other then taking up a roster spot that could be used by someone that brings more versitility to the team.

Dusty won't let them DFA Patterson so easily. Bye bye Scott Hatteburg.

Dusty may have an unhealthy man love for K-Pat, but if was solely in charge of the team, he'd bring in his "dudes"....Macias, Neifi, Hawkins. Jockety won't let him make these mistakes. Bye bye Corey. Have your locker sent to Chicago. You're particular brand of awful hitting is head and shoulders above what the current lefty turd is producing.

"That brings us to Javier Valentin. He serves no purpose on the Reds roster and the Reds are having trouble getting him playing time"
Wouldn’t Valentin get all of Hattenbergs ABs at 1B if Scott was gone? Seems to make more sense to dump the second leftie and keep the Switch Hitter who can back up behind the plate if ever needed.
I mean, who needs a 40 YO 2nd LHed 1B hitting .175/.260/.230 with a 29 OPS+. Hattenberg is almost a no brainier to get DFAed here…
Sucks though, because that means Patterson will still be around… But amazingly, for as bad as Patterson has been, he’s still more productive at the plate and 50x more useful as a whole since he can actually play a position and still runs faster than a parked pickup…

Macky, not sure why you busted the Cubs there, I don't see how they relate to this unless they kicked your dog or stole you woman or something. Or maybe you're just the jealous type. Either way, I guess you'll be defending Dusty while he's running that franchise into the ground then? Too bad the Reds don't have the resources to go out and fix the problems he'll cause. I'm not being a wiseass either, I really mean it, he's going to run them into the ground.

I'd think the Mets would take a long look at him

"I'd think the Mets would take a long look at him."
You would think. Even Scott Hatteberg can't hit any worse than Carlos Delgado at this point.
Delgado is crispy and dried-out, long past put-a-fork-in-him done.

Get on this Omar, a Nick Evans Scott Hatteberg platoon could be actually pretty good I think. Hatteberg is underated, he isn't as bad as people say. He makes contact, and he is pretty smart and knows how to play the game. I feel like a broken record, but the Mets need some situational hitting on this team. He could provide that. Delgado outcome of his atbats looks like this.
10%- Turns on one and jacks it out.
30%- Hits a soft groundball to the right side somewhere, despite having the whole left side of the infield open and practically being begged by the other team to go the other way.
30%- Strikes out
27%- Pops up
3%- HBP or BB.

Dont be suprised if the Red Sox take a chance on Hatty.....they need some bench help...plus he is a former sox farm hand.

"Dont be suprised if the Red Sox take a chance on Hatty.....they need some bench help...plus he is a former sox farm hand."
...How do you figure the Sox need another 1B/DH type? They have Sean Casey, who is filling that role with numbers about 50 times better than Hatteberg can produce at this point…
Posted by: darkstar1661 | May 28, 2008 at 02:15 AM
Darkstar; I would call them the same player. Casey isn't '50 x better', but there's no way Boston would acquire him while they have Casey. That would be redundant x infinity.

Casey is a younger version of Hatteberg. The Sox don't need him because of this. However he is much better then his stats show as well for this year as well. I hope that he goes somewhere where he can get some regular playing time as even a platoon starter.
The problem is that most teams really don't want to play a 40 year old 1B that really doesn't have any power and is a .290-.300 hitter.

S Hatteberg ~ .173 / .262 / .231 with poor D…
Sean Casey ~ .371 / .429 / .471 with great D…
…Sorry DirtyWater, I do consider Casey to be “filling that role with numbers about 50 times better”…
