« Odds And Ends: Ramirez, Tavarez, Brewslow, Pena | Main | Esteban Loaiza DFA'd - Kershaw Called Up »
Designated for assignment by the New York Mets back on May 13th, Jorge Sosa was officially released yesterday (bottom of the page) after the team was unable to find any takers on the trade market. Once he was DFA'd, it was a given that he and his $2MM salary would at least clear waivers. Sosa ended up declining an assignment to AAA New Orleans and is now a free agent.
Since joining the Mets prior to the 2007 season, Sosa was primarily used as the longman out of the bullpen, during which time he compiled a 4.89 ERA. But a rough start to 2008 (7.06 ERA) was compounded by a logjam of relievers in the New York bullpen, and the team was unable to justify keeping him on the roster.

Esteban Loaiza was just DFAed by the Dodgers as well. I mean, not that teams will be lining up to snag him, but…

This seems to be a growing trend now, no teams trade for guys they know are just gonna be DFA'd anyway. In the past teams would try and throw something the other way to make sure they got the guys.

With so many guys being DFAed, why trade anything for one of them? The difference honesty might actually come from a fear of PED effects. There might be knowledge, or atleast speculation, by the GMs about who might have being using HGH and such; chemicals which didn’t create mass/muscle as much as they heal/relax the muscles allowing for playing/working-out more often. Without them, will the players sustain more aches and pains, meaning hindered playing ability and lesser production? The trend seems to be ‘forget the vets and go with kids’, where so many of the vets who are getting playing time are just not producing ~ it seems to fit… I mean, its just speculation, but how else do you explain a rather blatant trend across the entire league?
