« Rosenthal's Full Count: Bonds, Webb, Hanley | Main | Red Sox Send Corey To Padres »
Rich Harden has been activated from the DL and will make his third start of the season today. John Shea says that the A's are hoping Harden will stay healthy, as the A's are better team with him. Billy Beane may be hoping for Harden to stay healthy for an entriely different reason. Before His latest trip to the DL, it was believed that the A's were marketing the right-hander that has not made more than nine starts since 2005.
After making two strong starts at the beginning of the season, Bruce Jenkins suggested that Harden needed about six strong and healthy starts before other teams would become interested. After the latest setback, that number is probably higher now. Troy E. Renck noted that it would probably take a healthy month before the Rockies would be interested.
Harden is to make $4.5MM this year and the team has a $7MM option for 2009. Harden is scheduled to become a free agent following the 2009 season.
It will be interesting to see if teams show enough interest in a talented pitcher that has made six trips to the DL in six seasons, or if the A's will be willing to lower their asking price.

Lets go Walt, WK was fired for you, get something done. Get Harden in the rotation in Cincy.

hardens going to have to pitch strong till the deadline and avoid the dl at all cost if a trade is to be done, but i honestly think is overall worth is small since his skills can hardly be showcased if hes going to hit the dl every 5 starts or so.

5 earned runs in 3 2/3's, ouch...

I think you have to lower your asking price on a guy like this who gets injured so often. Beane has always been fair in my opinion in asking prices. Harden would probably be better suited in an NL uniform.

Well I ould only imagine the rockies would have to give up at least stewart and jimenez/morales. Really I think both pitchers have a ceiling close to harden so it hardly seems worth it. They should just give these guys their innings and have a rotation next year of cook, jimenez, morales, hirsh and francis.

"Well I ould only imagine the rockies would have to give up at least stewart and jimenez/morales."
No way a deal like that would happen. Beane likely knows better than to ask for two legitimate potential stars. Harden's value has been so watered down by injury issues that he probably won't warrant more than a top prospect and another prospect or two. Jimenez and Morales are probably completely off limits, and definately won't be moved for a huge injury risk like Harden. I could see them offering Ian Stewart and another lower prospect like Hector Gomez, but Harden would likely have to stay healthy til near the deadline for that to happen.

Jimenez may have a ceiling that is comparable to Harden's but Morales does not have that kind of ceiling. Harden has arguably the best stuff in MLB, and only bad teams put anyone off limits.
The Rockies shouldn't be in on Harden unless its for bargain basement prices. They already built a rotation largely built on hope and buying another lottery ticket to fix the problem isn't a really smart way to do business.
