« Yanks Eyeing Derek Lowe For '09? | Main | Gammons' Latest: Bradley, Griffey, Padilla »
According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers released outfielder Jacque Jones today.
Jones, 33, received only 90 plate appearances before the Tigers gave up on him. He makes $5MM this year, of which the Cubs are paying $2MM. Given Jones' ability to play all three outfield positions, he shouldn't have a problem finding a new team.

Come to the Red Sox. He'd do well at Fenway and he is making the same as Crisp. I still don't know what the Sox think they can get for Crisp but if they are hellbent on trading Crisp than getting Jones will lessen the loss.

please tell me the padres pick him up. we need anybody half decent we can get to play OF. send Paul Macnulty packing or at least jim edmonds.
jacque would be *slight* upgrade over either one

Jondogg, I totally agree. He doesn't have the speed or the defensive prowess of Crisp, but how often is he really going to play with Manny, Jacoby and J.D. in the outfield anyway? I do wish he was right-handed but oh well.

who takes over his playing time in detroit? sheffield? thames? inge? raburn?

ahh. reading the article would be a good plan.

at the risk of being a comment spammer, now that i think about it i don't know that my original question was answered. wasn't sheffield DHing? if so, that leaves the DH hole wide open - does that mean that cabrera shifts to DH, guillen takes over at 1B, and inge goes back to 3B?
gah, options.

MO...the tigers called up OF Matt Joyce
Posted by: Larsen101 | May 05, 2008 at 03:36 PM
He loved playing for Dusty. Not sure if he'd really fit in anywhere on the Cincy roster, but can't really hurt them. Having him and big donkey in the same outfieid could be a disaster though.

so they put a guy making his major league debut in there over the other options? i doubt it. leyland loves his veterans.
Posted by: MO Boiler | May 05, 2008 at 03:44 PM
im just saying they called up that kid...Leyland said yesterday after that game in Minny there was going to be lineup changes so

I wouldn't say Leyland mindlessly favors vets, like Dusty or to a lesser extent Torre.
In fact, he seems disgusted with what the vets are giving him, and eager for some fresh blood with upside. I expect Ryan Raburn to get more AB's too.
In '06 he went to war in a pennant race with Granderson, Zumaya, Verlander and Bonderman, and stuck with them through thick and thin. When Dmitri Young rocked the boat he cut him in the middle of a game.
His critics can point out, though, that when Polanco was hurt he got DD to grab the washed up, never very good Neifi Perez, the worst player in either league, and played him over Omar Infante. Neifi had played for him in Colorado...the classic manager weakness for a player he remembers too fondly.

Wow, is that ever random.
I thought I had heard Sheffield say he couldn't play the OF regularly any more. I imagine it's going to be some sort of mix of Inge, Raburn, Joyce, Clete Thomas, and maybe some Thames if they're feeling adventurous.
As far as Jacque's destination -- SD obviously makes sense. I don't like him on the Red Sox roster (as much as I think he'd hit pretty well in Fenway); I'm not buying him as an average CF, and that's a must for the Sox.

Given that Sheffield himself has said that he thinks he hits better when he gets to field, I don't see why they don't get him some reps in the outfield if he can still throw anywhere near as well as he used to.
As for Jones, he does make sense as a bench player for a club like the Red Sox if they trade Crisp.

I think he makes sense for the Padres. He's a good outfielder who has potential to have some decent pop with the bat (27 homers in '06 with Cubs, then oddly fell to 5 homers in '07 in nearly the same number of at bats). Given the struggles of the San Diego offense so far, I think that the Padres should take a flier on any kind of guy who might produce. Jones seems like the type of guy who could compile a good amount of doubles in Petco and he's the kind of guy that Towers would sign

Padres?

"Jones seems like the type of guy who could compile a good amount of doubles in Petco and he's the kind of guy that Towers would sign"
...Same can prob be said of Michaels, so he might be on the radar as well.

I could see the Nats going for Wilkerson or Jones and getting rid of Rob Mackowiak.

the Blue jays are sending lind to AAA or making him a 4th of...so he could split time with shannon stewart

"I'm not buying him as an average CF, and that's a must for the Sox."
Look at the RZR ratings last year...he was actually one of the better CFs in the game when he played there last year. He is an average CF, whether you buy it or not. Sadly, he is a horrendous hitter...
Posted by: Aduncaroo | May 06, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Adunc, I dunno if 80 games is enough to really judge his ability in CF, especially since that's the only real time he's spent there in 9 seasons in the majors. But I will admit I hadn't realized he had played even that many games there for the Cubs.
I actually think he'd do well in Fenway. I just prefer Ellsbury/Crisp and Moss as 4th OF options.
This is a bad post for me, actually. Somehow I was also totally wrong on Sheffield's comments on playing the OF.
