Draft Day Roundup
The draft is just four hours away. We'll be live-blogging it here at MLBTR. Here are today's draft links.
- Baseball America's brand new top 30 projections.
- According to Keith Law, Mariners doctors gave the thumbs up on Tanner Scheppers and the team could take him at #20.
- Law says the Nationals seem to be debating between Kyle Skipworth and Aaron Crow at #9.
- Law adds that first baseman Yonder Alonso has an $8MM rumored asking price, which could cause him to drop. Alonso is roughly the 11th-best player in the draft, combining various expert rankings.
- Speaking of huge demands, Buster Posey's people are floating $12MM. Perhaps for that reason, the Rays will go with Tim Beckham.
- The Pirates seem a near-lock to take Pedro Alvarez at #2.
- Jonathan Mayo is "fairly certain" the Reds will take Gordon Beckham at #7.
- Nick Piecoro tosses out some possibilities for the D'Backs at #26.
- Tom Haudricourt has three names for the Brewers at #16.

Wow, I'd love for the Reds to come up with Gordon Beckham at #7. Do you think that's realistic?
Very interesting to see how Tampa passing on Buster Posey will affect everything else.

By the way, is the consensus that G. Beckham can stick at SS, or will he need a transition over to 3B at some point?

12MM for Posey, get real. He's nowhere near what Joe Mauer was when he was drafted #1 overall. The only reason he's going first is because he doesn't have BOras as an advisor.

I'm with you Zito. As a person who is a Giants fan solely because of Will Clark, how can you not be giddy at the though of another stud 1bman out of the south?

As a Giants fan, I want Smoak, but I'd be happy with Hosmer, Posey, Alvarez, basically any of the top bats mentioned except for Gordon Beckham. His swing looks like it is FULL of holes.

I'm surprised you never heard Smoak mentioned to Tampa 1st overall. BPA, I know, but still he would be ready to take over for Pena when he left, had very good power from both sides, plays excellent defense at first, strikes out less then Alvarez (I know his injury affected him). The Rays should figure they have a 6-7 year window and Smoak can be a big part of that soon...and he may end up being the best hitter in this draft.

I like Posey, but he wants too much $$$ for a catcher
Also like Matusz, but we need a bat.

Royals take Melville at 115. Whether he signs or not is a different story.
