« Braves Interested In Randy Winn? | Main | Odds And Ends: Bradley, Haren, Griffey, Holliday, Atkins »
Kirby Arnold of the Everett Herald is reporting that the Mariners will release Richie Sexson, and it could happen in the next week.
According to one person familiar with moves that are planned, Sexson will be let go, possibly within days. The timing is not set because the team is dealing with other personnel issues that go beyond the procedures for moving Sexson.
Sexson is still due about half of his '08 salary of $14MM. This was the last year of a 4-year/$50MM deal.
This move shouldn't come as a big surprise. After the firing of Bill Bavasi, the M's are clearly ready to shake up the roster and Sexson's contract was dead-weight.
Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex and can be reached here.

His overall numbers are atrocious but this guy can still kill lefties. .347 avg and .998 OPS against lefties, somebody will sign him as a platoon guy probably.

Can't believe that the M's couldn't find a taker for him to defer at least a portion of his salary or get back some scrub prospects.
As zs190 pointed out, he does have some value facing lefties.

"Can't believe that the M's couldn't find a taker for him to defer at least a portion of his salary or get back some scrub prospects."
This year's really been amazing that way. Frank Thomas, Jim Edmonds, Jacque Jones, Mench, Wilkerson, and it looks like now Sexson... apparently no takers at any price.

40 man and 25 man roster spots are becoming more and more valuable.

I am so looking forward to Gurus post about the future hall of famer being let go for nothing.

The Jays need Sexson's pop badly. He's more useful to them than Brad Wilkerson. I hope JP grabs him on the cheap, it would be nice to have someone else's 14m player while the Jays pay Thomas to play for Oakland.

The Mets should definitely sign him; he'd be a perfect platoon partner with Delcrappo...

Either of those two teams (Jays and Mets) could take a shot with Sexon.

I second that the Mets should sign him. They need a right-handed bat off the bench too

BJ,
“Can't believe that the M's couldn't find a taker for him to defer at least a portion of his salary or get back some scrub prospects.”
...esp considering we were guaranteed Sexson would have a 400 OBP and blast 40-50 HRs this year. That guy sure is a funny one...

Well there is #2 on the list of things that should've been done in March accomplished.
All this Mariners info, and no word yet from Guru? I for one am shocked.

We were all assured that Sexson is a 2nd half player. As Dark pointed out, Sexson is primed to go on a tear in order to reach that mythical 400 OBP and his 40+ bombs.
Where is Guru lately? Haven't seen him post for a week or so.

…A couple weeks ago someone said Dunn is a good hitter ~ maybe he is just still typing his 500-page response…

What happened to Richie? Somebody on the Mariners coaching staff needs to work with him on his mechanics. Anyway, I know it will take a miracle for the Mariners to contend this season, but what about the idea of bringing in Barry Bonds? Hear me out: not a single team is interested in Bonds, Seattle needs another superstar and he wants to play to reach 3,000 hits, they could use the attendance boost (they're 5th in the AL in attendance, and it should be higher considering how cool Safeco is), etc. etc. etc. I'm sure Seattle is thinking "young" right now, but signing Barry doesn't necessarily assign him the role as the "centerpiece" of the franchise. At this point, what does Seattle have to lose by signing Bonds as the DH? Does anybody here really think that Bonds wouldn't be more effective than Jose Vidro?

You know Billy Beane is salivating right now. With Frank Thomas at home for a while and Mike Sweeney recoving from surgery on both knees, why not pick up some right handed power. The price is right, plus Sexson would have plenty of opportunities to stick it to his old team if he stayed in the AL West.

Yeah, I just stumbled across it today on SSRN...

But..but..but.. he is on pace to be a first ballot hall of famer! He is pretty much the best player in the history of the league. What does on here? I know, they must be packaging him in a deal for A-Rod and Chase Utley. Only thing that makes any sense.

Hey JP how about signing Sexson at a reasonable price? Instead of using Ted Rogers' money like a r3tard *cough* Tomo Ohka, John Thomson, Victor Zambrano, Armando Benitez. Jays fans, don't you love how all of these players were released. Anyways signing Sexson is a risk but if it can revive the Blue Jays' offense I'll be happy.

“Yeah, I just stumbled across it today on SSRN...”
…Was he still using the normal “you live in your moms basement” arguments to prove his points?
“But..but..but.. he is on pace to be a first ballot hall of famer!”
…Yeah, what was that pace again ~ something like 8 or 9 years of .290/.360-ish ball with 35+ HR, right? Here we are like a month later and wondering if he will even have a job in the majors next week…

Kansas City anyone? We were interested in trading for him in the offseason. Now, that he will be dirt cheap, I expect Dayton to be all over him. You know, Ross Gload is horrible.
