« Odds and Ends: Bedard, Griffey, Minaya | Main | Wondering About The Future Of J.P. Ricciardi »
To make room for RHP Santiago Casilla, the Oakland A's have designated reliever Kiko Calero for assignment.
The 33-year old Calero began the season on the disabled list with a torn rotator cuff and finally returned on May 30th. Since then, the righty reliever was used very sparingly, only pitching 4 2/3 innings in five appearances in 2008 and had a 3.86 ERA over this span. Last year, Calero's season ended in early September due to the rotator cuff injury and he had also missed three weeks in July with a sore shoulder.
Oakland now has ten days to waive, trade, or release him.

A quality bullpen arm...

Calero has said he will accept the demotions if he clears waivers.

Kiko Calero has been one of the better bullpen arms in the majors from 2004-06. However, like many people, I am not surprised by this move. The reason why is because Oakland has had one of the best bullpens in the majors [personally I think it is the best bullpen in the majors.] For example, they have Huston Street who has been one of the better closers in the game. They have Santiago Casilla who has been one of the best young setup men in the game. They have Joey Devine who has only given up three earned runs in 22 innings while striking out 28 while opponents are only hitting .198 against him. They have Keith Foulke who has been healthy lately and pitching efficiently. They have Alan Embree who has been one of the best left handed pitchers in the American League despite being 38. They have Brad Ziegler who has had ten scoreless innings to begin his major league career. They have Chad Gaudin who had success as a starter but was switched to the bullpen because they didn't have enough room for Gaudin in the starting rotation since Oakland's starting rotation has been one of the best. To make my point though, Kiko Calero was not released because he wasn't being effective in the A's bullpen. It was because Oakland didn't have enough room for him in their bullpen. Had he been on another team with a bullpen not as good as Oakland's, then he would probably still be pitching. Had this happened a year ago someone probably would have claimed him or even trade for him. However, he has had injuries lately for the last year [even though he's healthy now] and didn't do as well as his old self even though he did pitch through an injury. I think that Calero will clear waivers to Triple-A Sacramento, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see him claimed on waivers by another team who needs bullpen arms.

I could see the St. Louis Cardinals acquiring Kiko Calero. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to do and Kiko Calero did have success as a rookie in St. Louis before being traded to Oakland in the Mark Mulder deal. Anyone else's thoughts?

"Anyone else's thoughts?"
Yeah, Billy Beane is a sick trade partner.

"Yeah, Billy Beane is a sick trade partner."
Hell, he'd probably ask Ankiel for Calero.
As for the A's having the best 'pen, not a chance. Taken a look at both Los Angeles 'pens lately? How about the White Sox? Cubs?
